    Love it!
This show and The Daily are my favorites of NYT. The only way I get my news, and I really appreciate all the different perspectives. Keep it up!

    Undecided Voters
I’m actually shocked that you aired this undecided voters episode. Like what?!? What VP can they point to in history that ever visibly accomplished a policy agenda?!? They think educated voters are required yet literally haven’t read the policy agenda on her website. On one hand I appreciate your goal of shedding light on this, on the other it’s almost impossible to listen to.

A little unfulfilled with this episode
I usually enjoy this podcast but I feel that this episode left me a bit unfulfilled. I don’t understand why undecided voters did not address the lies that Trump gave during the debate and how that affects their overall vote. He was so egregious that I don’t know how anyone can be turned off by it but then again I have my own confirmation bias. I just wish that it could it be addressed with undecided voters without leading them to an answer.

Will the undecideds really do more research?
Do they really care about the issues/policy? Are they really clear on Trump’s concepts vs Harris’ plans? Are they really undecideds…these folks you keep tabs on? My guess: No. They seem like Trump voters who, maybe just want to keep their vote to themselves. Maybe this exercise has been played out. Why frustrate everyone?

    Platform for hatred and homophobia
Gives a platform to hatred and homophobia without any push back. Gives the most hateful people in our society an unobstructed voice to the masses. Some of the episodes are difficult to listen to when promoting hateful ideologies regarding the lgbtq community. These views, shrouded in religious “morality,” should be challenged. This podcast makes me realize how dumb so many across the country are.

    Undecided voters…
All these interviews with so called undecided voters is just infuriating. I’m sorry but they all just sound like deeply uninformed morons

Love the show but doesn’t paint the full picture of nuance in evangelical faith
As an evangelical I appreciate and look forward to listening to the episodes where faith and policy intersect. But I believe most of political journalism is overlooking a growing meaty percentage of evangelicals - those of us who believe democrats have a more policies that lineup with biblical scripture. Ironically, many of us believe the argument of democratic policies are actually more pro life than the narrow approach to the Republican policy argument. There are a lot of us who don’t speak up because quite frankly, we don’t want to get into the debates that are necessary within the intersection of policy and the Christian faith. I would love to see this viewpoint represented in The Run-Up as your reporting on the various coalitions that will make or break the Republican ticket.

    I give up on nyt
The daily podcast really disappointed me this year. I thought at least this podcast would keep some journalistic integrity. I really liked the host, but it seems like the whole of nyt has realized there’s more money in bowing down to the right

    Favors Democratic Party
I started listening to this podcast to try getting unbiased information as I prepare to vote for the first time. However, it didn’t take me long to realize that this podcast very much favors the Democratic Party. Don’t recommend listening to this if you’re trying to have an open mind about ALL parties.

    Horrible s
I listen to the daily all the time. This show is a joke with an incipid host

Fell off a cliff in the last year
I used to look forward to each episode. Then I would start and episode and feel overwhelmed by the sense that the NYT was, frankly, just *whining*. These days. I usually look at the title and mostly decide to skip it for NPR, the Economist, WaPo, Axios, or something independent. Maybe it’ll return to form after this election. 🤞

    Be transparent with your biases
I wanted to listen to the economic policies for both candidates. Instead I got an infomercial on “orange man bad” Just another echo chamber here. Poor content.

    Excellent Political Podcast
Edit to my earlier review: I really can’t say enough about Astead’s interview style. He is so thoughtful and curious about what people think, without a pre-conceived opinion of what the answers should be. This podcast is awesome! Honestly this in one of the only political podcasts I can listen to right now. Astead’s interview style is relaxed, non-judgemental and curious - you can tell he really enjoys talking with people and is respectful to everyone who takes the time to answer his questions. I look forward to every episode.

    Love Astead
I listen to The Daily and first listened to Astead there. Love his reporting!

    Best election-focused podcast
This is the best election-focused podcast! Astead is an excellent interviewer — he engages in meaningful and interesting conversations with people with diverse perspectives, allowing listeners to hear from people we don’t normally encounter. He truly listens to the people with whom he is speaking and this creates deep and interesting discussions. Astead isn’t cheering for one side or the other; I honestly have no idea what he personally thinks. This show is a real look at both political players and real voters. I look forward to every episode.
  • Sponsored 21
    Almost excellent
I don’t miss an episode! I love how Astead reports everything but he seems to be hyper fixated on Biden’s age. He brings it up every episode even when not relevant to the topic at hand. Don’t be a broken record.

    Love Asteas Herndon
Like your favourite smart friend asking the hard questions!

    Excellent!
Astead. Excellent reporting. You make me so angry sometimes as an African American listener. Your re-airing of the contentious Harris interview felt like a personal dig and an ax you were grinding. However, I am learning that we are not a monolith, and your reporting is bringing in the voices of racist Whites in particular that while I hear dog whistles of the Klan whenever they speak, in a democracy- we must hear them as well. Keep up the necessary work.👍🏽
  • goldenblossom
Bernie Sanders speaking the truth …
… but maybe it wasn’t what your host wanted to hear. He sounded impatient with Sanders in this interview. The Senator’s critique of NYT was insightful, in all honesty, and I appreciated his definition of progressivism.

I Don't Miss An Episode of the Run-Up!
Although I must admit I put off listening to this season's The Run-Up--I was just too depressed about another divisive campaign--I now don't miss an episode. Astead covers all aspects of the 2024 race in a thoughtful way. I appreciate him and am so glad for his journalism in this important election year.
  • innhvxsctvbjnmonbfc
    Bernie Sanders 🩵
Great interview with Bernie Sanders! These are more of the conversations we need to have about the middle and lower class. Also addressing the influence of the elite and wealthy class
  • Enslown
    Other candidates
It would be great if the podcast would cover more than the main candidates. People are not only disillusioned with Biden and Trump, but with the system as a whole. Wish you would cover ways that our elections could be reformed, ex. Ranked choice voting and third-party candidates, other than RFK Jr. Don’t you think it’s worth mentioned Dr. Jill Stein- the only candidate who actually had a plan to stop Israel’s genocide of Palestinians. I’m finding myself increasingly disappointed with the NYT’s reporting on these war crimes, but I was hoping for more from Astead and The Run Up who have shown a willingness and ability to push back and challenge people who present lies as truth.

    A must-listen for voters
A good day is when I see new episode appears on my playlist. I love Astead and colleagues’ interview style, as they insist on difficult questions. Though the pro-Dem bias is obvious, I value that they share air time with so many Republican and MAGA voices. It’s important we hear from ALL sides in advance of an election.
  • Ughhhhhno
    Stop trying to “make news”
There are times when you can hear the disappointment or frustration in his voice because he didn’t get the answer he wanted. He also seems to be very critical of Dems in a way that he missed with Reps. Stop trying to make news and start trying to report it.
  • Agnes Choi79
    Good but could be great
I really think this podcast provides some great insights to the political environment. My only constructive criticism is, Astead, please edit down your questions. They are hard to follow and meandering. It would be more impactful if they were not three or four parters. Very enjoyable listen and I never miss an episode.

The voice of clarity and compassion
My go-to podcast for staying hopeful during this troubled time.

    Mix it up
Love the show… but feeling like several of the episodes this season so far are focusing too much on the “fringe.” Would love to hear from a more representative group.

The Podcast we don’t want, but the one we need…
Astead Herndon is a national hero and performing a great service as we head towards the election that brings me the most anxiety in my 50 years of voting. This podcast is the best I listen to in trying to understand the Cult of Trump, but I still can’t believe so many Americans (uneducated and educated) would worship an immoral, untruthful, narcissistic, paranoid mob boss. Astead, I hear you and appreciate you; be safe out there this year!
  • eps1969
    Another biased left wing tool..
Just another so called journalist presenting his views. Sickening 🤮Do some actual journalism.

    Excellent, Non-Ideological
Asted Herndon has a great personality, and does his interviews without any ideological slant. The show is a pleasure to listen to, and very informative. Highly recommended.

No podcaster hates Biden more than this clown. Painful.

    Astead does bad journalism
When an undecided voter says their mind is being changed because of a lie Trump told, your job is to PUSH BACK, not move on. It’s really pathetic to hear Astead, who I do generally respect, not push back on these people every week. For gods sake, Jordan Klepper can do it. It’s sickening to hear when our demcracy hinges on these willfully ignorant people.
  • hannroz
    Thank you, Astead
Thank you for pushing these people! It is absolutely astonishing to have the Biden campaign and the Democratic Party deny the truth that is right in front of us. They tell us over and over that they know better, we are stupid, if we remember Joe Biden (if not explicitly, then absolutely implicitly) indicating he would not run again, we are silly and mistaken. Oh and too bad if you don’t want him, you’re stuck with this candidate! The condescension is hard to take. Thank you Astead for challenging them on our behalf. I’ve never felt so voiceless.
  • Janjanjanjanjanjanjanjan
    Outstanding Election Coverage
Honestly, this is probably the best NYT podcast in my opinion. It’s that good. It has been my favorite election coverage since the Circus in 2016.
  • TJ '90
    Really impressive
Week after week I really look forward to listening to whatever it is that Astead has to report on. I initially began listening with the intention of hearing from “the other side” as I lean a little conservative. I now listen because I feel he covers topical politics in the best and most informed way even if I don’t feel like he speaks from my perspective. Thank you for being bold in your choices to report in the most unbiased and filtered manner in my opinion!
  • workoutmom21
    Latest episode
I really appreciate how you pushed Ron Klain. You articulated the concerns that many, many, many of us have. If it’s the most consequential election of our lives then why isn’t the Biden campaign fighting harder? It’s clearly because they can’t. Thank you for shining a light and voicing the concerns that so many of us have to political operatives, who are clearly incredibly out of touch. Astead Herndon is a gift!
  • Krisa A
Focusing on Biden’s Age is not helping
Overall, I love the show and reporting! However, I think the media’s overwhelming coverage of Biden’s age has been very unhelpful. Repeating information at some point gets ingrained in how people think and what their reality is. The way far-right media keeps spewing Trump’s lies, his followers say verbatim when asked why they support him. If all media keeps focusing on Biden’s age, they are doing the same thing - making moderate and independent voters keep using his age as a reason not to vote for him. The office of the Presidency is not as all powerful as people think. Instead of the President’s debate performance, more people should have been concerned about the Supreme Court’s barrage of decisions. Talk about power! I trust Biden to run this country given his experience, compassion and wisdom to surround himself with advisors who can actually get things done with the whole country in mind. And as long as he is the Democratic nominee, I think it’s pointless to keep focusing on his age.

    Correct the lies
Hi, I enjoy the show most of the time. However, you really need to educate the people when they say things that are absolutely false. I understand your are trying not to be combative and get the other side of the story. Thank you for all you do!
  • AKA Queen Mab
An unfiltered glimpse into American politics
I love this podcast. But to be honest, it's not always an easy listen. Listeners have to be patient and resist the need to judge —:no matter how outrageous and baffling some people's views are!, Instead you have to embrace the unfiltered truth about what many voters are actually thinking. The podcast isn't just what you want to hear, and that's one of the things that makes it incredibly valuable in the current media landscape.
  • deborahtn
Happy to have found this podcast
Mr. Herndon is filling my need to hear the voices of real voters. I have been looking for a news cast that doesn’t lean towards one political view. As an independent I really appreciate the hard work you and your staff do. Thank you.
  • Tpoach
    Lies unopposed
Whenever the interviewed makes a false or misleading statement, even if just mistaken, Astead rarely corrects the statement with facts, even if only for the listeners. What’s statements are true? Which are misleading or false? Who knows, because statements are never challenged.
  • Hjugfjiknjjhjih
    Used to be interesting
I’ve listened to this show for quite some time knowing there was a super lib bias. I previously was impressed with how neutral the reporting was but recently it’s like they’ve given up. The hatred and lack of respect for anyone who expresses a different option is on full display. Interviews have become rude and dismissive. A shame.
  • Ricky Tenderkiss
Do we no longer fact-check conservatives?
On the whole I enjoy this offering. But do we no longer fact-check conservative guests? Do we allow guests of that ideology to say whatever they want, unchallenged? Do NYT journalists become mere stenographers from time to time if that ensures conservative guests will appear on your podcasts? I understand it may be difficult to get a good cross-section of guests: ours is now a fragmented news ecosystem, and a few conservative billionaires have spent a fortune manufacturing a p.r. behemoth within it which only superficially resembles journalism, but within which borderline fascist guests are instead lobbed softballs and treated — literally — like royalty. So when Kellyanne Conway has a choice of shows on which to appear, and a conservative ecosystem will echo her nonsense uncritically, you must be tempted to go equally easy on her to get her on your show. And this, in fact, is what it sounds like you did for your episode uploaded around 2024.05.30: allow Kellyanne Conway to ramble unchallenged, particularly on the topic of Donald Trump’s criminality and his conviction in civil court on charges surrounding his sex crimes. But why?? If allowing her to prevaricate, dissemble, and outright lie is the cost of having her on as a guest … is booking her as a guest really so important? If you are choosing ratings and sensationalism over hard-hitting facticity, then you are veering quite far from journalism’s core value. The better world we were on course to build may feel more distant then ever right now, but please don’t be among those who abandon that vision and grab for the easy money instead.
