Behind the Bastards

12,756

There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.

    Amazing Podcast
Robert Evans is a truly awesome podcaster. He introduces us to some many other awesome other folks that are great to listen to as well. He is so thorough and well read. Love this podcast. My dream is to be a guest on his show some day!

    Men
The episodes about the history of masculinity in the USA, OMG! What. The. —- is up with some men? I mean, some guys are SO insecure! And then, the way they treat women because of their self-perception as inadequate is insane. Y’all want to be masculine? GET OVER IT and just be. Try and find confidence in your inherent qualities, tall or not. And on that note, Robert, I love ya but could you stop talking over Sophie?

There is a problem with Utah
I think as an American living in Illinois, I’m listening to all the problems in Utah and all the cases there is a problem with Utah and it’s showing up right now with all the podcasts and everything that is going on with murder cases, rape cases quite frankly, I am sick of Mormons and their whole thingand it just doesn’t match on any level and I’m glad that it’s showing up with all these podcasts

    Good show!
I’m getting ads for Trump watches.

    We don’t deserve this
I’ve never seen anybody do more work for a free podcast. The amount of research, scholarship, and analysis this guy puts into every episode is worthy of academia. He’s brilliant and gives a gift to the world twice a week. But you know…work on those pronunciations man. It’s triggering.

    The Rudolf Steiner Episodes!
Ooooooh my god I love you guys for this. They deserve to me mocked. Excellent work, good job. Ha

Liberal snobs that call farmers ignorant
I’m a liberal that is very disenfranchised by “liberals” like this. Woke liberals calling farmers ignorant. They keep talking about the facist governor as if he is a republican. There was a time when the Democratic Party sucked and it’s taken a dark turn in recent time with no one paying attention to the censorship they are involved in.

Super great history and important content
Depressing history and horrible people covered in an amusing way. History people should be listening to. Robert and his guests always work to provide correct information with humor. I don't like the episodes with Matt and his soundboard, but they are just a fraction so I just skip those and 5 stars for all the others.

    Good premise too much bias
Okay, I believe Yarvin has some dangerous ideas. However, you can make points against people you disagree with without totally distorting their positions. Either out of a lack of research, or a biased reading, you have misrepresentedCurtis Yarvin’s key ideas. I have been reading him closely for years and do not agree with much of what he says. However, I noticed that you massively misrepresented what he believes and even misrepresented what his intellectual mentors believe. This diminishes your credibility. Stick to a fair and thorough approach. I carefully reread the article from July 23, 2011. And it states the exact opposite of what you say. It is an article about how to win over and seduce the left and attacks violence explicitly. He condemns any form of violence. As an effective way of persuading anyone. Fundamentally, you have stated the exact opposite of what he says; an intentional distortion.

    Slow down sometimes
Love the show - however, as a Black American, I sometimes find there to be a bit too much laughter when talking about the history of physical and systematic violence against subjugated peoples. It seems more humor points than historical ones, where the lives mentioned are brought up to get laughs (by white people) rather than educate them on history they can presently, potentially contribute toward the perpetuation of (speaking of white supremacy)

    One of the best podcasts!
This is a must-subscribe. This is one of my favourite podcasts since their first episode

    SOPHIE = QUEEN
Will Robert ever let a female guest speak without interrupting or correcting her? Time will tell.

    Go complain elsewhere
The right wingers complaining in the reviews section are wrong per usual, this is a great show

    Good premise, bad hosts
The idea of this show is phenomenal. But it’s ruined by the constant political ideology by the hosts, particularly left-leaning ideology. That with the pretentiousness of how they incorporate their ideologies makes the podcast unlistenable. Remove the politics and I’ll be back.

    Only One Issue
The concept is great, the host is great and the show is great. The only problem is that the guests are hit or miss and can really wreck an episode. Some of the guests feel the need to insert their jokes at every turn which can be unnecessary and some just constantly go off on tangents making it hard for the host to stay on topic. Prop completely derails the flow of the show. It’s incredibly hard to listen when he goes off on some half thought out sidetrack. The second I heard Prop’s voice on the new episode I had to skip. Just terrible

    Great show.
Robert is a great host and very funny. Prop and Jamie Loftus are the best guest hosts. They having amazing chemistry with Robert. The only drawback to the show is Sophie, who is the antithesis of fun and the human equivalent of a wet blanket. Can we have 100% less of Sophie?
  • keikokomikokoi
Wow, what a naive simplistic condescending bunch
Feels like a teacher and children talking around in a circle in the classroom, all trying to be polite, and laugh at everybody’s bad jokes. No critical thinking skills. What so ever. Like, literally zero.

    Delightfully disturbing
As an American expat, Robert’s sense of humor is a source of tremendous glee. The ripest sort of education—and where are the baddies came from is crucially relevant to being a responsible citizen. The only thing I don’t like about this podcast is Sophie’s commentary, which always lowers the level of the discourse.

    PRONUNCIATION KEY
Please double check pronunciations of names and towns. It’s more professional and very IMPORTANT to get it correct when trying to explain/teach history to people. Im on the verge of not being able to listen anymore because it’s so annoying
  • Nhansard
    Right? Right?
Please stop saying right after every other sentence. I love the topics and discussion but can’t listen to it anymore.
  • candrim77
Fascinating subject - guest needs to stop talking so Robert actually can
This guest on the episode about wilderness camps needs to be told that we aren’t interested in her life story. Robert and Sophie are great.

Well worth the time to listen
This is one of the best podcasts out there. I’ve listened to several episodes now and am hooked. I just finished part 2 of Curtis Yarvin — very timely.

    PUNS!!!
Thank you for the puns, I swear I just laughed out loud! You are fantastic at making horrible things and horrible people funny! Well done.

    Like the information
Lots of good info on stuff that history class never covered or glossed over. Especially liked the L. Ron Hubbard episodes. My grandparents moved to Dunedin in the early 80s so we saw the emotionless people walking around their areas there and Clearwater when we visited. Explains a lot.

    Fun Well Researched Gallows Humor
I’m a long time fan of Robert and Sophie’s work always interesting, funny, and well researched. It may recency bias but the Curtis Yarvin episodes are particularly brilliant. I understand Robert’s hesitancy in giving this guys toxic views too much oxygen, that said it’s important to be aware of the dark things lurking in the shadows. I’ve enjoyed Ed Helms comedy work. Having him as a guest on these episodes was amazing. I loved his genuine curiosity and his good natured efforts to give any specific information the most generous interpretation and to give people the benefit of the doubt. Keep up the great discussion of these destructive extremists who unfortunately gain influence in society.
  • Rhymes with Snoozin’
    Great premise, great topics, unlistenable
The host uses the word “right?” so frequently that it renders this otherwise smart and well written podcast 100% unlistenable. Get this guy an editor or have him commit to stop using filler words and I would love to come back.
  • denny dangus
    Predatory ads
I like the show but the latest episode I heard has ads for predatory gold-selling companies. The kind intended to fool right-wing grandmas and grandpas that the economy is about to collapse (free Ronald Reagan coin if you call now!) It’s gross.
  • CapitalClyde
There’s a reason it takes them so many episodes
When someone cuts these down to where it’s just information and not chatter with bits of info I will listen. It’s just too much for me to wait for hosts to get to the point.
  • tinydogtinyhat
One star off for too many ads
Would give five stars if the amount of ads were cut in half

    Crusty Jugglers
I really enjoy this show, and I learn so much every time. I just listened to the anti-vagrancy episode and Robert mentioned my favorite movie, Hot Fuzz, and I was so excited I had to leave a review. They’re really doing the most for the greater good….. the greater good.

    Great show!
My sister showed me this podcast (Kissinger episode) and we bonded over it and that was the sole reason I got interested in politics.
  • RobBird08
Good concept but lots of leftist talk
I like the host as he seems to do the background work needed for the discussion. But he lets his strong leftist views seep into the story, which ruins the podcast. If the host would just stick to the story that is enough to prove his point. No need to bash on conservatives or those that don’t agree with his personal views. Too leftist to listen to. 👎🏻

    Wonderful podcast!

Truly one of the best podcasts ever
Robert Evans is a fantastic host and is so knowledgeable. I was pulled in by the Kissinger episodes after hearing an ad and then consumed until I was caught up, which may not have been great for my mental health, but filled my brain with so much knowledge. 100% recommended!

    Stay on topic
I was trying to listen to the Dr. Phil episode and it was utter nonsense. It felt like the hosts were all drunk and 15. Total waste of time.

    Infuriating
This is a difficult podcast to rate and critique. The vast majority of episodes have very interesting subject matter, and for the most part is very well researched. However the problem (and it’s a massive one) lies with the hosts. Robert is generally unbearable, too clever by half, endless snark, and very shallow concerning anything that may have happened the second before his arrival on the planet. Incredible hot takes and just a general dismissal of anything that predates his experiences or knowledge. He pretty much brags about having no idea about numerous cultural events from more than 30 years ago, and blithely dismisses them as unimportant or just guesses and inevitably gets it completely wrong. It’s embarrassing. The level of condescension and (totally unwarranted) superiority is mind blowing. And his co-hosts are the worst toadies imaginable. It’s a real shame because beneath all the snark, preening, and stream of consciousness “I’m so awesome” attitude, there is a good podcast buried under all the garbage. I can only take this in short doses. 3-4 episodes and then a 4 month break like a Silkwood shower.

    Big fan many years
Hey Robert. You’re great and you e introduced me to many historical topics I was not aware of. I’m appreciate those insights. Furthermore, I appreciate the unique prospective you and your hosts regularly bring. What am I unhappy about Isis not sure werijfnir now. The presentation is tired. The topics are getting forced. You have been an incredible talented reporter. Your shtick as a podcaster is tired. I love you…
  • Todd Nizz
    Very tone deaf
Well researched, informative show but the frequent laughter over serious subjects detracts from the quality of the show.
  • Jules Lino
I love this show SO much but…
Some of the guests are just not it. They either don’t give any feedback at all or interrupt way too much like it’s a standup set. Also, I’m sorry to say it - but Sophie just honestly ruins a lot of the episodes. She interrupts Robert, derails the discussion, and it’s usually about some dumb pop culture thing that has nothing to do with the episode. Also, she often demeans Robert for not knowing about sports or pop culture. What if he demeaned her for not knowing about something? It’s such a double standard and unnecessary. Sometimes I just can’t even listen to an episode because she’s interrupting so much. Matt Lieb, Jeff May, and Jamie Loftus are my absolute favorite hosts and I hope they come on more! I love Robert and am so happy this podcast exists, but it truly is hard sometimes with Sophie derailing things and making fun of Robert.

90% great %10 laughing at genocide
This show is great most of the time, but sometimes I think they get a little too comfortable with their subject matter. Like yeah we can joke about crazy moments in history, but joking about prison rape of Palestinians because it ruins prison escapes for you is honestly disgusting. Can we not normalize and joke about the awful things that are happening right now just because bad things happened in the past?
  • sammie gj
Robert, Sophie & all guests are incredible
People are dumb. Sophie hasn’t moved to being a cohost. And if she does, COOL. Sophie is great. Robert IS in fact a comedian, and a hilarious one at that. I appreciate the consistent ad breaks, because more men need Better Help. In fact, get off here and find a therapist 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Real men learn to mansplain in therapy, try it!

    Great.
Straight up. Informative, hilarious, and existential. Robert & Sophie?? Great. Guests?? Great.

    Products and services
Update: it’s still a funny bit when the host goes to commercial and says something about products and services. It will never stop being funny. I also love when he cackles.
  • cmdm
    omg...this guy...
is many things but he’s not funny...nothing worse than an arrogant jackass who thinks he’s funny when he’s not...he’s also entitled and mansplains to the point of ALMOST making my head explode…
