Sanctuary: Surviving The Zombie Apocalypse

87

Brutal, agonizing convulsions simultaneously strike a quarter of the Earth’s population. There is no warning and no discernible pattern regarding race, age, gender, or region. The afflicted die within moments of one another. Seven minutes later they rise again and attack the living. The speed at which the disaster happens is too great for any organized response. Towns are overrun. The government and military find themselves unable to react. Civilization crumbles in a matter of hours. By the end of the first day, the streets are filled with shambling corpses, mindless beings driven solely by the desire to feed. Jacob Thornton decides his only chance is to abandon his home. Fleeing the city, he travels north, encountering other survivors on the way. Together, they gather supplies, seek a place of safety, and discover through trial and error how to defend against the zombies. Yet, the creatures never stop moving, and they have begun to leave the population centers, spreading across the land.

    Bro get over yourself
I’m sorry. This could have been good if not for the writing. He makes it seem like women throw themselves at him. Also, a mid thirties man having a sexual relationship with a minor? Just this constant theme of “poor pitiful women are defenseless and need a misogynistic pedo to save them” this story is not it. Ok idea, horrible execution.

    Great story
I binged this and it was pretty good. I am sad that it ended the way it did. But all good things must come to an end I guess.

I love it but it’s over
Like I said I love this a lot and have a life that seems like it would be easier if zombies did happen but that’s morbid and I’m a massive fan of zombie apocalypses

    Awesome podcast
The podcast is amazing and I love listening to it but ohh man the transition sound scared the crap out of me the first time

    Love the book
I love the book and author however I do wish he would get one or two others to read it maybe a female to do the female voices . Other then that amazingness I listen to this while cleaning horse stalls !!

    Best podcast ever!
I literally miss this series every time I see the word “podcast” it was the best little surprise while I was waiting for my audible credit to come in...I wasn’t expecting much of it but I was so enthralled I listened to it all hours of the day!! Loved it so much, I might listen to it again!

    Meh
The narrator should apply for being certified as a sleep aid. I also think that the weighting needs A LOT of work. But it’s a good storyline, so I can endure.

    This Could Have Been Good!
Of course everyone mentions the voice, but I could have gotten past that if only this podcast wasn’t so sexist and downright gross with the mid 30’s man/minor female relationship. Ew, dude. It really does feel like the author is writing his gross apocalyptic sexual scenario where women fight over him. The story could totally do without. I do like the amount of detail and explanation they go into about the zombies. I wish I could keep listening but I keep getting grossed out by how amazing this guy thinks he is and the pitiful, beautiful women throwing themselves at him. Trust me, no woman is going to be focusing on those things when you’re being chased by zombies.

    Not bad
Yes, the reader is a bit nasally but the story is pretty good, characters are reasonable and most are likable. Does it continue?
  • sistery
    UGH... WHY?
The whole mid thirties man having a sexual relationship with a 17 year old is weird and gross. It comes across as a nerd writing out his fantasy where women (and girls, apparently) are all fighting over him. The only thing I can appreciate about this is I totally buy that the only way this condescending misogynist is getting laid is if he actually was one of the last men on Earth.

    Should have written a paperback.
This guy's voice did it for me. I couldn't help myself but to try a zombie podcast SEVERAL times, but can't handle his voice. I did listen to all of them. It's a podcast, and would have made a better book, or possibly with a diffferent or multiple readers.
  • MitchJohnson
    Pretty good
I agree with others with the voice. I actually stopped listening to it after episode one for a few months. Then on a long drive I figured I'd give it another try. And guess what? It's actually pretty good. I was disappointed that it ended. Really good story.
  • Sturgisbob
    Monotone voice, good story
Once I got used to the author's voice I enjoyed this story. I enjoyed the way he mixed the individual character back stories into the overall plot. Like most stories of this kind there are characters you love and those you hate. I was sorry to see this story come to an end.

    meh zombie fest
First I would say I liked it well enough, especially at first; but, the main character became a tiresome know-it-all. It also felt liked it was written to justify certain political position that I don't want to hear about in a fiction book. Also, there was the odd relationship with the extreme age difference that kept getting brought up way too much and the ending was kind of mediocre.

    Had so much potential
Much like the made for TV after school movie, you find yourself listening to it and asking why am I still doing this unable to turn it off. Yes the narrator reads it off void of any emotion or enthusiasm. The story itself had such potential, but instead of going into detail about the subject we are here for zombies, he will focus on the back story to a throw away comment that someone made that didn't have much to do about anything. When the story really takes a turn that one can get into, it's brushed aside and glazed over. The ending as well was the same as the rest of the story could have been more just ending leaving you asking why did I spend all this time listening to it. Hope he learns and has a better go next time.

    Zombie audio book
This is a good story and well worth the listen.

    Really good book
Follows all the zombie rules. Good audio production. Well written and compelling story.

Worth a listen, Overall not a bad story, I enjoyed it, But.........
First: If I Never....Ever hear the word "Shambling" again, it will be too soon. Secondly: Decent story overall, plots/conflicts could have been been stretched out with more details, while the humdrum filler could have been either shortened or rewritten to be more relevant. Plus at times there was inconsistent mono-logging and lack of distinction between characters dialog sometimes. The biggest downside for me was the Constant Referencing to his and the girl's age difference, does start to give it a creepy feel, Even my wife who only listened to 1 chapter, (Not into zombies) picked up on it, "Whoever the girl's character was based off of, he has been crushing on her BAD". (Her Words) And a little turned off on the basic stereotype/scapegoat "Bad Guys" being Bikers, was a big let down, for me and kinda ruined the ending, There are just as many if not more dirtbags that drive cars/trucks then ride bikes.

    Second time through.
SPOILERS!!!!!!!! I just got done listening to this story for the second time. I caught things that I didn't catch the first time, as often is the case with any book and really enjoyed the story once more. However, I am still hoping for a second story that would continue with Briana's pregnancy, how the four year old develops, and weather they decided to leave the castle after spring hits. Love the story! Keep up the good work!!!

Voice was terrible! But story is great!

    Great book! Wishing for more
Hope he continues to write, keep with the same time line and give other stories!!!

    Big bird
Very good story .as other reviews have stated, the narrator (for some people) may need some getting used too.like one reader put "we got big bird folks"the narrator's pdoes resemble our fine feathered friend ! With that said don't let reviews, teasing the poor narrators voice ,deter you from listening to this story. It's not that annoying or bad enough to totally disregard this ( although after reading about big bird I pictured him surviving the zombie horde every now and again instead of a human !)
  • Stargazer101us
    A very good zombie story.
You get to know the characters and the description of the events are written very well.
  • Freedoms_glory
    It's pronounced Sheridan not Shatdirn
It's a really good story... If you can get passed the writers/narraters voice, I promise it's worth it. Also it ends abruptly could have been longer.

    Eye Roll
Trying to listen to this, but it's not easy. The audio quality is good, but the reading is hard on the ears. This story, what i've heard so far, would benefit from a good bit of editing. I find myself taken out of the story often with all the contradictions between the author and his story. I don't think I could listen past the second episode. It's like surviving the Zombie Apocalypse with Ned Flanders. The thoughts in the head of the protagonist and the witless banter between he and his companion are hard to listen to. There are better choices out there.

    Just awful... (Spoiler)
I tried to get past the awful narrating, I tried to get past the (spoiler) odd 35 year old/17 year old relationship, but I could not get past the outright boring plot. So much time listened and not much actually happened. Maybe it was because detail is given to the humdrum and the good parts are just fluffed over. Poor character development. The lead tries to sound tough, but ends up sounding like a pervy wuss. Seriously, the world just went to hell and a hand basket and he makes jokes about beans and farts? Give me a break. I could not have deleted it faster.

    Very well written and narrated
I have read numerous zombie books. This one was well written and very well narrated. I couldn't wait to pick it up and start listening to it again and again well done.

    Better and better
I thought this started slow and the narrative voice was a bit odd, but I soon found the narrative totally engaging. Great job!
  • JahRose
Why did it end! Sequel Needed!!
While, like others, the authors voice was hard to deal with, I really enjoyed the story. My only gripe was the ending... For many episodes I wanted it to end, and when it did I wanted it to continue!
  • Ingrown Big Toe Toenail
    Narrator
Good story but the narrator's voice was annoying. He sounds like Napoleon dynamite's brother Kip.
  • Lewd dood stewed n tattoo'd
    Thoroughly enjoyed
While there are bits and pieces I would've liked done differently...I cannot give any less than 5 stars.
  • REECH.PARKS
good story, but author pls don't narrate again
good story, main character is a little bit wimpy, author should'nt narrate as he has a voice good for sesame street. Let others narrate your stories man...
  • abmadj
    Engaging
I found the story very engaging. The writing style pulled me into the character and it really felt like I was listening to his retelling of personal events. I really got to know the characters and feel what they were going through. It was a very refreshing story. I will come back and listen again. As for the narration, it's not polished but I felt that added to the feeling that I was listening to Jacob tell his story. Well done!
  • wooly-mittens
    Great storyline
The only thing that keeps me from giving 5 stars is the author/narrator's pronunciation. If you're going to use big words in your writing, you should low how they are pronounced. Melee = MAY-LAY not mee-lee Repulsed = well, repulsed not replussed which isn't even a word. Wander is not pronounced like wander Oh and the narrator really does sound like Big Bird from Sesame Street.
  • Alisadawn9768
    Zombies
Listened to this story twice now. Just as good the second time around.
  • GetKat
    bad narrator
Good story. HORRID narrator. I was trying to hang in there, but the narration was puting me to sleep (literally).
  • cbdugger
    Listen to the end
Narrators voice, blah, blah. That isn't a problem if the story is good. This one is. Like the story overall, and the final "battle" was very engaging. Best part of the tale. The politics were way too in my face, even though I agree with some of them. Not what I listen to fiction for. Liked the Zombies, and the fact that the author didn't spend time explaining the why's and how's of them. Just what they did. That's refreshing.
  • SquezzBox
    Story keeps bringing you back
The narration can sometimes be a bit drawn but the voice made me think of the character and his way of looking at things so I liked the voice. Sure a bit more emotions maybe would have helped but I can't be sure because the character just reminds me of the voice and an emotional voice would not feel like the character was the one speaking. Story though it leaves you with un answered question is still a delight to listen the characters where likable and somewhat realistic. Thanks to the author for this delightful podcast and for sharing it with the rest of us.
  • Book-Wyrm
    Plain bad
Spoiler alert: the finale is completely illogical, leaving a handful of people to clean up a carnage of thousands... at a proven indefensible location. Main character was ready for the events from the get go without even an attempt at explaining why.
  • bogata low
    Just ok
If you like zombie stories you may like this book. The story starts off slow but feels real. The road trip that comes next is too fast, and needs more detail. The problems were overcome fast and simple. The result is that I dont care about the people in the book. The sexual relationship between a late 30 somthing man and a 17 year old girl permeates the story and make it feel creepy. I look forword to a new book from this writer but want a new group of people.

    Please do more
Loved listening to this. I can excuse the narration cuz he is obviously a writer and not a voice actor. I was curious after the first few moments of listening and have been listening when I can to find out what happens. I like his slightly different take of the zombies and his dry and practical approach to dealing with a zombie apocalypse. It's awesome if you give it a chance. And im asking the writer to please do more.

    Enjoyable Zombie Story
While this is not the best Zombie story ever it is the most enjoyable Zombie podiobook I have heard. The characters are interesting, the sound quality is solid, and the narrator has a good voice. The best Zombie stories know that the Zombies are best used as setting to tell a character story and humans make a far better villain. This one is no exception to that rule.
  • J,E,S
    I love it need more
great I want to know what happens with the baby and the group
  • Appsters
    Awesome story!
I love the story line and characters, just great
  • MentorStudios
    Great
As some have mentioned, it's takes a few minutes to get used to the narrators voice. With that said, it was just a few minutes and the story was fantastic. I finished yesterday and I'm sure at some time in the future I will listen again.
  • MadeYourMolars
    hang in there
The reading voice is a bit annoying and lacks intonation of any kind, but the story, while not great by any means, is entertaining. Like most podiobooks, this one is read by the author, not a professional voice artist and like most podiobooks you forgive the lack of production in lieu of being drawn in to the story. Overall, pretty good, good enough to fill the day at least. Full of the usual cheap thrills a zombie apocolypse story should have and enough detail to not have you rolling your eyes. Would download other titles by this author
  • BluMan!
Voice was hard at first - But by the end I really enjoyed it.
Great job Joshua! I truly enjoyed this story (Podiobook ) - Can't wait for whats Next!
