Getting In: Your College Admissions Companion

114

For millions of American teenagers and their parents, adolescence is increasingly defined by one all-consuming goal: Getting into the right college.“Getting In” is a real-time podcast following a diverse group of New York-area high school seniors through the exhilarating and harrowing process of applying to college. The series is hosted by Julie Lythcott-Haims, the former Dean of Freshmen at Stanford University and author of “How to Raise an Adult.” The season will chronicle all the important steps along the way, from applications to (we hope) acceptances. The students will get advice from a stellar panel of experts, including former admissions officials from schools such as Princeton and UVA, and from experienced high school guidance counselors. The experts will also answer listeners’ questions.Nothing can remove the stress and uncertainty of the modern college application process, but “Getting In” aims to provide both teens and their parents with the kind of knowledgeable companionship that will at least make them feel they’re not alone.

    You're Admitted!
Many thanks to the fantastic hosts of Getting In. The College Coach hosts are THE experts on college admissions because they were Gatekeepers at highly selective colleges. Each week they have fun guests who entertainingly unpack the real story in today's maze of admissions and financial aid.

    An indespensible companion!
This is one of the best podcasts I've ever listened to. The host and the guests - students and college counselors alike - provide students, teachers, and parents with a glimpse inside what the colege admissions experience is like, providing invaluable advice along the way. I'm a college admissions cousnelor and I would love it if all my students (and parents!) would listen to this series before embarking on their process. I wish the program hadn't ended.

A Must for All High School Students and Parents
We get similar questions and wrestle with these themes each year. Julie addresses each topic by providing background and multiple perspectives. Such a great resource for all high school students and their families.

    We want more!
I love this podcast! There was so much useful information to help get into college. I hope that there will be plans to add more shows. Maybe even a new season. Perhaps with high school seniors who would like to attend small in-state colleges. Or, even for high school seniors who would like to start their post high school years developing a trade and the best way to go about that.

Very helpful as I start junior year
I love this podcast. Like many other teens in the US, I have parents who emigrated from a foreign country to give me the chance to pursue higher education in America. While I am very grateful for this opportunity, I find myself wondering about the process of applying to college, receiving financial aid, and how to pay off the debt that I may accrue during my four years of college. This podcast has answered many of my questions, and more. When school starts again in the fall, I'll be sure to recommend this podcast to my friends.

    Invaluable
I'm a father and a school counselor, and this podcast is helping me on both fronts. There is no other podcast out there that addresses "getting in" so well.

    Essential listening...
for parents of high school kids (and probably the kids, too). I'm the father of a ninth-grader. Although we're still a couple years away from the college admissions process, I've found this podcast invaluable in bringing me up to speed in how college admissions works today. In some ways, it's the same as when I applied a few decades ago but different in so many other ways. Juli Lythcott-Haims is a great host and adds an impressive cast of admissions officers and conselors to the discussions. Keep it up, Julie! (at least until my younger child starts college in six years)

    Great Resource!
This is a wonderful way to start to understand the college application/admissions process. For me, it also supports my desire to keep perspective and not get swept up in the ridiculous frenzy that is out there with regard to higher education options.

    Wonderful resource for families!
Love this podcast! Dean Julie is an absolute breath of fresh air in the crazy world of the admissions arms race. Stay on that soapbox Dean Julie!

    Very interesting and relatable
This podcast is an excellent explanation of the process of applying to colleges. It is made much more accessible and relatable by the combination of expert views, listener questions and the examples of the high school seniors who are followed through this process. Ms Lythcott-Haims is an excellent host. My only complaint is that the intro and wrap-up to each episode are each a bit long, which makes listening to several episodes in series a bit of a chore. But the content is worth it.

    Thanks!
Julie, thank you so much for bringing such humanity into the college admissions process. Our children are more than their stats and you have consistently advocated for them to find who they truly are. As parents we worry so much about them we forget the big big picture. Our goal is to raise wonderful, caring, passionate human beings not kids who look good on paper. Thanks for reminding me of this every episode!!! Yes, my kid will be fine wherever he ends up :) thanks!

    So very appreciated
I have only recently discovered this podcast and I am thoroughly enjoying playing "catch up." As a mentor of college-bound students, the podcasts are timely and informative, as well as appropriate for professionals, parents, and students alike.

Clear, informative, and accessible to all!
As an admissions professional for 20+ years, I listen to this podcast with critical ears. The advice given is right on the money and the issues discussed are relevant and interesting. I highly recommend Getting In to all of the families in my school. Excellent job!
  • StanfordGrad2012
    Interesting to all audiences!
I wish I had this when I was applying to college! I still find this interesting even though I have graduated and am years away from having children getting ready to apply. Also love the discussion of possibly changing the admissions process. Julie Lythcott-Haims and the rest of the staff have relevant concerns about overworked, burned-out HS students that everyone should hear about.

    The Great Equalizer
I teach in a highly regarded private school but my children chose to attend a large public school. There is a wide chasm between the services that college counselors at private schools and public schools are able to provide, but this podcast serves as an equalizer. I consider myself fairly savvy in the intricacies of college admissions, but I have gathered many pearls of wisdom in each episode. I have a child in 11th grade who will soon be navigating the treacherous waters of college admissions, and this podcast has been a terrific resource. I’ve also enjoyed following the narratives of the high school seniors who are featured in this podcast. Kudos to the folks who made it all happen!

    Very Informative!
I have just started listening to this podcast, but they have me hooked already. It is nice to sit down and just listen, as it is very calming, yet you learn many new things. It has given me a new perspective on many different college related issues, and I'm glad that I am preparing now. With the opportunity to pick next years' classes coming up soon, I hope they do a segment on how to best choose the activities and hobbies one should get into. With this, how colleges weigh certain activities, like clubs compared to sports. Anyways, it's a great show, and I would love to hear more.

MUST listen if you have a Jr or Sr in High School
The timing couldn’t be more perfect for this podcast to come into my downloads (Can’t remember how I first heard about it - must have been a shout out from some other podcast I love). If you have a Junior or Senior in High School this is a fantastic resource for you and your child. I like the way the stories unfold along the timeline of this two-year period. I hope the link to or create another podcast on how to parent a College Freshman!

    Some really helpful advice
The most recent episode (starting the financial aid process) has been the best one to date. Lot of leads on where to find good information. My only gripe is the advice to hire a private admission counselor. There’s a lot of good information out there for free, and I know too many people who worked as an application reader for a few years and then become a private counselor. Seems like a racket to me.

    Excellent podcast.
I'm in my first year as a college counselor and I've found this podcast incredibly helpful. I learn something new every episode and their approach to the college process has helped me reimagine the way I work with students and families. I also appreciate the calm tone that contrasts the typical mania surrounding the college admissions. I hope this podcast continues for many years!

    Excellent podcast!
As a mother to a high schooler and middle schooler, I very much appreciate the balanced information offered in this podcast. There is an understanding of the hysteria that can envelope families, but the podcast clearly points us in the direction of a sane approach to college planning.

    So beneficial!
I am so glad I discovered this podcast! I think it should be required listening for every high school college counselor and student! I have a daughter in 10th grade and will certainly use a lot of what we have learned through this podcast. As others have mentioned I look forward to each episode and are so rooting for the students! I wish these were released more than once per week!

My daughter and I love the show! it’s been a great source of calm and helpful insight during this nutty period, making it a lot less stressful as we can take a step back and look at things more rationally and less emotionally. We’ve learned a lot, thank you!

With regards to studying in Europe
Let me start off by saying what a huge fan I am of this podcast, despite being a 22 year-old graduate student who is (hopefully) past the days of college/university applications. I look forward to every episode and I am rooting so much for all of the students who are profiled. The most recent episode which centered on studying in Europe was a particular delight for me because that is exactly what I did when I was 18 and going to college for the first time. I chose to study in England for many of the reasons mentioned in the show (cost, 3-year program, more focused on just your major, a ‘global experience’ etc.) and would like to speak to some of the social differences that the show touched upon. I think a major thing that students who are considering coming to Europe to study should be aware of is, that at least in my experience in England, here students are treated as independent adults, not teenagers. Due to government loans most students are financially self-sufficient and starting from their first year many chose to live in apartments/flats with friends, eschewing the traditional dorm experience (not everyone does this in their first year, but by the second year and beyond everyone is living independently). I found this a far cry from the almost summer camp-like lifestyle that many of my friends described at many American liberal arts colleges. I found this a pleasant surprise, probably because at 18 I was staunchly independent, but if you’re looking for a more hand-holding environment (which I doubt, because deciding to go to Europe to pursue education is already a pretty independent move) then this is something to consider. Overall, I cannot recommend coming abroad enough, not just for a year of ‘study abroad’ which I find more like an extended vacation, but to really move here and make this place home. Sometimes it can be hard, the red-tape can be a headache and going upwards of 9 months without seeing my family was a really tough challenge, not to mention that I haven’t had my mom’s Thanksgiving in almost 4 years. But, I have never been happier than I am here and, as mentioned in the show, I was able to get into a better university here than I would have at home. I decided to stay after my bachelor’s degree and pursue my masters here and I’m currently on the job hunt hoping to make this my permanent home. But as Julie mentions at the end of every podcast, it’s not just about getting-in, but about finding the right fit. I hope that all of you out there thinking about college will find the perfect fit for you, be that a mile down the road or halfway around the world.

    Love the podcast
As a senior in high school, i find this podcast very informative and helpful considering its application time. However, in spite if the generous advice provide, there is a lack of diversity in the students interviewed. They are all top-tier students, which is a minority in schools, thus, so far its hard relating with them when they're applying to the best colleges in the nation while I am applying to just some in-state schools. It sounds like im complaining but aside, i find this podcast very informative. I just wish i heard it before senior year started.👍😁

    Perfect Timing!
I’m so glad to discover a podcast based on my hobby. I’m a high school English teacher, often asked to write recommendation letters, and my daughter is a high school senior. We’ve done 10 visitations, and she is in the process of writing her essays and applications, so the timing for your show could not be better for us. Let me explain why I could not give you a 5 star rating. Although my daughter is an exceptional student (4.49 gpa, 2020 SAT, 3% rank), most of the schools you mention are out of her league. I wish you included schools in your conversations other than “reach schools.” There are probably folks in your audience who are seeking admission into state schools and smaller private colleges. We shall continue to listen, and once my daughter moves on, I’ll remain a listener so I can share your insights with my colleagues and students. One other thing - I find the constant background music to be very annoying. When I listen in my car, I’m distracted. If I’m home listening with headphones, I’m always looking around as your music’s volume rises and lowers. You may think that the bed of background music is a production value, but it takes away from the natural feeling of the conversations. I’ve been a podcast listener for years, but this is the first review I have ever written on one. The only reason I wrote this is because you asked your subscribers to do so.

    Misses an opportunity
This podcast is informative and features knowledgable experts, but seems targeted only to highly involved, college-educated parents. The podcast has missed opportunities to discuss educational inequality. For example, only one of the many HS seniors it follows doesn’t have college-educated parents, while more than half of all HS seniors in the US don’t have college-educated parents. The podcast’s only touch upon financial aid thus far has been to encourage families to trust colleges' projection of financial aid enough to apply early decision; yet, the podcast neglects to mention that early decision leaves families with almost zero leverage with which to negotiate financial aid packages. I hope that next season the podcast features a more diverse crew of seniors.

    Informative for parents and kids
The college app process is loaded with stress and frustration at a time when parents want to cherish their child's last year at home. These podcasts are well-produced and informative for both parents and students. Listening together can start a conversation and empower kids to make decisions based on what they've heard and learned, and not resist advice just because it came from Mom and/or Dad. Thank you!

Recommended for anyone interested in college admissions...
For the past 7 years, I have worked in higher education. I have a master’s degree in higher education leadership. That said, I am learning a lot on this podcast — so I can only imagine the great resource it is for high school students and parents thinking about the next step. The host has a ton reminiscent of Sarah Koenig of Serial and still comes with a wealth of knowledge. The experts are equally knowledgable. This is really a great podcast!
