Marco and the Red Granny

18

By bringing back the patronage system, a new alien species has transformed the moon into the new artistic center of the universe, and Sally Ride Lunar Base soon gains the nickname “Mollywood.” These aliens can do amazing things with art and the senses, allowing a painting, for example, to stimulate other senses than simply sight. When someone asks a starlet, “Who are you wearing?” she could as easily say “J.K. Rowling” as she could “Gucci.”Every creative person in the world wishes for a patronage. It’s quite competitive.Marco wanted one, once. But then his girlfriend got one and shuttled off to Mollywood for fame and fortune, and Marco stayed home, waiting for his own patron. After several years, he gave up entirely. His career faltered. His agent dumped him. And then, one morning, he gets a call. At last he has a patron, at last the aliens want him. But he’s about to find out that an artistic patronage isn’t what it was in the good old days, and that the only friend he’s made, a tiny old woman who’s the star of a blood sports reality series called The Most Dangerous Game, has secrets of her own.

Strong story with a slightly weaker ending.
The story and characters here are top notch. I did not expect to like Marco, but I did, and of course who couldn't love the Red Granny. The sense blending artwork of the Lijune Aliens really elevates it into the realm of true Sci Fi and not just Fantasy in space (which is ok to, mind you). The only problem I have is that the ending feels rushed. I apriciate what Mur was doing with the ending, I just wish there had been another chapter or two to set it up.

    Well written and solid story
Though I've never been into sci-fi, Mur put together a great story in an interesting setting. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Marco and the Red Granny and am looking forward to reading/listening to her other work. Also, her podcast "I Should Be Writing" is an awesome resource for aspiring writers.

    Great novella
This is a fairly brief story, 7 epi's of 20-30 min. Finished it in one car trip. The story is fresh, engaging, and has a satisfying ending. It's a "lite" sci-fi that anyone can enjoy. Definitely recommended

My favorite Mur Lafferty story so far
I enjoyed the Heaven series of podcasts, so even though the premise of this one didn't sound too interesting to me at first (I'm not a fan of gladiator-type things) I decided to try it out. So glad I did. I actually stayed on the elliptical machine longer just so I wouldn't have to turn the story off. The main character isn't a blood sport fan either, so I had something to connect to. It's fairly short so I can't say much without giving too much away, but I really enjoyed listening. While itunes lists each episode as 45 min long, most were closer to 20 or 25 min. You could probably listen to the whole thing in a day or two if you wanted.
