Service: Veteran Stories of Hunger and War

64

How do our food stories change during wartime? Each episode follows a veteran or wartime volunteer from their home in the United States through their overseas deployment and back again. We hear firsthand where they fought, who they fed, how they ate, and what tastes they missed most while away at war. From World War II through today, soldiers and civilians come together at the table to remember, reflect, and show respect. Hosted by Jacqueline Raposo.

    Excellent show with interesting interviews
I recently developed an interest in MREs the troops consume in the field. Some of the material I have consumed takes me back to WW2, so I rewatched Band of Brothers and the Pacific paying attention to food. I also asked my dad, who served in Korea about his experience. I’ve asked a good friend about his food experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan. All of the stories are moving, and the stories in this series are moving and amazing. Thank you for recording these interviews. What you have here is truly important documentation from the mouths of our WW2 veterans! I long for a new season. More stories. If you have more to say, please do. Our Korean War vets and our Vietnam War vets have stories as well. Food is a way to get them to talk safely and humanely about their challenges and growth, and especially their much appreciated service to our country.

    Excellent Excellent Excellent!!!
I love history AND WWII history. I used to sit with my neighbor and listen to his stories about WWII when I was little and was fascinated. This series is wonderful! So many great stories. I also enjoy the format. I binge listened in 2 nights. ❤️

Great stories that are rapidly disappearing
The sound effects are so loud and overbearing it is often hard to hear the voices of the elderly interviewees.

    Amazing
These stories are some of the hardest to listen to. But they are some of the most important stories that are being lost to time. Thank you to all who serve.

    Inspirational
The stories these men tell are inspiring and very emotional! Jacqueline has a unique way about her that seems to open up the minds and hearts of these servicemen to share their experiences. I cried, smiled and was completely enthralled.

    Can’t get enough
Really loving these moving stories about Americans in the military and their relationship with food. The episodes are just the right length to really capture the story without spending too much time like some podcasts. Totally recommend as something to listen to with family, too—great way to introduce podcasts to older generation.

    Amazing storytelling!
We're so lucky these men are still with us to share their incredible stories! The host does a great job interviewing veterans and getting both harrowing and surprisingly sweet stories from WW2. Such a compelling and well produced podcast!

    Beautifully written, narrated, and edited
This beautiful podcast is an easy and lovely listen, even as it deals (gracefully) with some of the most harrowing aspects of our human experience - war and loss. As someone whose nervous system can’t normally handle war films, I appreciate this doorway into these incredible veterans’ experiences as something we all know and love well: food. These stories are important and timely, definitely worth a listen and a share!
