There Are No Girls on the Internet

732

Marginalized voices have always been at the forefront of the internet, yet our stories often go overlooked. Bridget Todd chronicles our experiences online, and the ways marginalized voices have shaped the internet from the very beginning. We need monuments to all of the identities that make being online what it is. So let’s build them.

    Cliff’s Notes on Tech
I don’t know how I found the pod in 2020 but I’m glad I did. The stories Bridget covers are something we should all be conscious of but frankly I don’t have the bandwidth to read and research on my own. I appreciate learning more about tech topics that wouldn’t otherwise interest me. Listening to Bridget Todd is like having brunch or drinks with one of your smartest girlfriends ❤️

The internet is all of us and for all of us. Keep up the good work Bridgett. We wont be bullied off the internet or silenced.

Bridget is great but needs to lose Mike as a co-host. Considering unsubscribing. He’s terrible on air and she’s much better solo. She’s very informed and appreciate her perspective and voice. He drags things down.

    Yes please!
I ❤️ Bridget Todd! But I have noticed the co hosts seem uneasy about podcasting? The halted way they speak kind of grinds it down to the point of it being slow and not contributing that much to the discussion.

    I LOVE TANGOTI
I never miss an episode of this show. It keeps me updated on internet culture, tech news, and the online communities and trends that impact our lives every day. Bridget is a treasure and a hero.

    Engaging
The Missy Elliott episode was especially wonderful! In some episodes the background music can overpower what the host or guest is saying - not enough to stop listening though

    Love this podcast!
As someone who’s not super tech savvy, I really appreciate the way Bridget breaks things down! She brings so much heart, knowledge, and passion to her work. I’m always excited to see a new episode of TANGOTI on my feed!

    So fun and important topics
Love this podcast! Bridget, you are an excellent host and interviewer. I appreciate your perspective and insights deeply, and think the content of the pod is spot on for my interests in tech, surveillance, queer and trans rights, anti capitalism and sex worker's rights, etc. I also love the variety of co-hosts/producers/guests you have. Keep it up!

    Necessary news!!
Thanks for bringing nuance and passion to important topics that are less covered or easily missed. 5 stars! ((Edit: I really like the episodes with Joey - they rock))

    Essential listening
I love this podcast and the range of topics that Bridget covers. She’s smart, digs deep on the issues and brings on really interesting guests. It is sad that this podcast gets hate just because the host is a black woman who covers issues like inequity and racism in the tech and social media realms.

    Excellent across the board
I came across Bridget Todd’s work first from years of guest experiences on other podcasts I enjoy. I love hearing her thoughtful, well-researched and well-reasoned arguments and explanations. I have never been disappointed by any of her work not simply because of personal preference but because she puts out reliably good work.

Long time listener first time reviewer
Happy birthday to the podcast! I’ve been listening for two years, and when Bridget mentioned the podcast turned 3 I couldn’t believe I had never written a review for this fantastic show. I’m a woman in tech and it’s so nice to hear Bridget’s take on relevant topics as well as getting other women/marginalized people to chime in as well. ESPECIALLY the July 4th episode with Aja Barber. I read her book last year and casually put on that episode, not realizing an author I admire was joining in the conversation. I was so excited! Thanks Bridget and producer Mike for the wonderful content you bring forth each week. I love this podcast and look forward to more years of listening!

Smart, important, and a breath of fresh air
As someone works on the internet as a career (and by default chronically online), this podcast has helped me address and reconcile with the ethical issues around tech and the industry I work in. I have recommended this podcast to parents, colleagues, and basically anyone I interact with who is feeing the despair of the evolution of the internet. So we’ll researched and love your style, Bridget! Thank you for bringing some relatable humor to the hellscape that is the internet!

This is a such a great pod. An excellent take on the headlines you’ve probably heard and I especially appreciate the illumination of stories that impact us but might not be showing up in our in our feeds. Happy birthday TANGOTI!! Keep going!!
  • soapwaffle
    Love ❤️ it!
Bridget is a wonderful podcaster. She has a way of interviewing her guests by making it a conversation, and not an interrogation. Regardless of the topic I find myself thinking more about what was said by both host and guest long after an episode ends.

    Thank you
Thank you Bridget for this podcast. I enjoy listening while commuting to work. Your topics are interesting to me and I absolutely love to listen to a woman of color talk about current events.

    re 5/27 episode
instead of feeling conflicted about Target pulling pride merch in response to right wing attacks we should be outraged that our society allows the safety of LGBTQ+ people to be decided by market forces. once again, the problem is capitalism.

    No Intelligence whatsoever
If America was truly systemically racist, black history month would not exist. This podcast would not exist. Simple equation. Absolute Ignorance fuels every word out of this woman’s mouth.

Love the podcast, too many ad breaks
I understand that podcasters have to make money off what is an almost entirely free medium, but the ads are so close together that it ends up lacking a narrative flow. I’m no producer, but maybe space them out a bit more. I love this podcast, it’s so important, and the host is a so insightful and deserves to be heard, especially in a genre that has neglected Black women.

    Bridget gets it
This is on my regular podcast rotation. Love the topics and the guests, and Bridget’s work is important. She brings into focus all of these ways that the internet fails women, and especially women of color. She also focuses on how so much of internet culture is possible through the contributions of Black folks past and present. I love the conversations, keep it up!

Great show, Sophie isn’t great though
Just listened to the most recent episode, so this may not be reflective of the rest of the show. The host is really thoughtful and nuanced, but her sidekick is her producer Sophie. The host is prepared, smart, nuanced, thoughtful, and fair. Sophie is totally going off the cuff, her comments are never smart or insightful, she is *always* negative and casting blame, she’s always pandering to the most negative audience members, and it’s compounded by the fact that she isn’t interesting. I think if the host were in charge of the stuff she’s discussing shed do a great job. Sophie, though, always ready to trash people, doesn’t seem like she has any ideas of how to do better. That said, it was interesting and I hope going forward, Sophie isn’t on it too much

    23 and Me Propaganda
A whole episode with one of the 23 and Me spokespeople? Come on. You'd think all the regular advertising would be enough money.
  • agirlontheinternet
Great content, frowned out by too many ads
The show, the host, and the guests are great. Very interesting, thoughtful, and nuanced takes on technology issues. But the balance between content and ads is off. Half of the episode is ads. The content should be longer to balance out all of the ad breaks. For every 4-5 minutes of discussion, there’s a 4 minute ad break.
  • tessyuh
    So necessary
Relevant and powerful. Thank you for the wide range of topics and guests. It’s an incredibly fascinating podcast that is helping put a light on the dark corners of the internet.
  • Timputer
    Always a great listen!
There are such a wide variety of episode subjects that the host Bridget does a fantastic job presenting in an interesting way and tying into the common themes of the show. No episode is alike and there is no formula, so every episode comes as a great surprise.
  • Strung Out
    Way too many ads
The other reviews are spot on. Far too many ads for such a short program. The show has amazing potential but you get the same amount of ads with 30 minutes here as you do with 2+ hours on the bechdel cast. It’s offputting. Todd is phenomenal. She is clearly hyperintelligent and eloquent. I agree that the short length oftentimes drives a shallow analysis and that’s really too bad. But the show has so much potential and already nearly listenable. Lastly, this show is nowhere near one star. You’d have to be quite petty to rate this that low just for the ads, so I have to assume it’s right wing lunatics. Ignore them. The show is a solid four stars.

Very good podcast. I enjoy variety of subjects provided by host. Keep up good work. Gentle feedback:I love host’s wealth of knowledge, humor and experience. Please work on speaking slower. Sometimes a little hard keeping up with what is being said.

    Great content, great host!
I really like the perspectives and topics this podcast brings to light. Sometimes I wish things were a little longer, more detailed, and in-depth. I often feel it scratches the surface a little and then is mostly consumed by ads. I genuinely like what this has to offer, just wish it had a bit more oomph at times! Still amazing, nonetheless.

    Excellent pod
I’ve been seeing Bridget on all sorts of podcasts & online, so I’m glad to see she’s got her own show. I love her view on things, the topics are always interesting & she has that pleasant audiobook voice. I’ve only recently found this podcast, so it looks like I have a lot to catch up on

    Awesome host
Found this after listening to IRL, and I love TANGOTI’s content even more! The explanations are so accessible and nuanced. Particularly appreciated the Lena Dunham episodes — felt like I could finally understand the valid critiques of her actions AND the larger cultural context. Thanks for making this!

    Must listening
Spotlighting topics that matter and don’t always get the perspective they deserve. I love what this show is doing and think the host is one of the best podcasters working today.
