Texas Monthly True Crime: The Problem With Erik

5,542

Erik Maund had it all. A wife and kids, a mansion by the Austin Country Club golf course, and an executive position with his family’s car dealership. But in March 2020, a message from a stranger put everything at risk. Someone knew Erik had an affair with an escort, and wanted money to keep quiet. Erik didn’t pay the money, though. He didn’t go to the cops, either. Instead, he paid Charlie Sheen’s former bodyguard and a couple of special ops-trained security contractors to confront the blackmailer. Things didn’t go according to plan.

In “The Problem with Erik,” host Katy Vine and producer Ana Worrel tell the twisted story of what came next: a perfect storm of secrets, mistaken identities, and tragic miscommunications that left two people dead.

From the Texas Monthly team behind “Tom Brown’s Body,” “Stephenville,” and "Shane and Sally" comes the latest true story of crime and justice in the Lone Star State.

  • also fed up!
    Spoiler given in first episode.
“When it all feel apart”, and how, is revealed at the end of the first episode. Several podcasters do this and I think it ruins the suspense and even interest in the season.

    Good stories
Have listen to seasons one and five. I enjoyed the last season very much. The season about Tom Brown is very disconcerting and mystifying. I still can’t put my finger on the mother and what her story is. Of course, everyone feels bad when parent loses a child, but she broke down maybe once during the entire season at least on the recordings. What really soured me on her was during the update where the interview were asked her what she would’ve done if Tom was gay, and instead of immediately saying that she would embrace him as her child she had to think about it. And then say that she would pray about it. That was it, anyone who’s had a child and can’t unconditionally say they would embrace them regardless of the way they choose to live their life is just mind-boggling. And in this case she’s lost that child and she still couldn’t embrace the fact that he might be gay. I feel terrible for Tom Tom and he must’ve lived through it. That’s the kind of judgmental woman she is.

Another fantastic offering from Texas Monthly
This is a wonderful collection of amazing stories from the talented story tellers at Texas Monthly. I don’t know what fairy blessed TM with their amazing journalists but I’ve never once been let down, from the stories they choose to the way it’s presented to the cadence of their voices. When I don’t know what to listen to I literally search Texas Monthly and know it’s something great. HIGHLY recommend all their pods.

    Texas, y’all got some DRAMA!
First, Mr. Hollingsworth is a NATIONAL TREASURE! I am NOT from TX but have read many an article in TX Monthly and these features always blew me away. They were so well done, like the New Yorker with a softer “hometown” edge. The podcast is just the perfect extension to bring to the rest of the nation. Keep the stories coming y’all! #fan4life

All seasons are very well done.

Advertising Don’t Tread on Me silver bars
I’ve enjoyed previous Texas Monthly podcasts and was looking forward to this one. However when I heard in the first episode the advertisement for silver bars that say ‘Don’t Tread on Me’, a symbol associated with the Capitol rioters, I couldn’t believe it. Definitely can’t support a podcast that disseminates this type of message.

    Wow.
An amazing story. Very sad and remarkably told by Skip Hollingsworth. He has the best voice for this. What a gift to us.

    The Problem With Eric
Texas Monthly’s productions are the gold standard for investigative journalism. It is such a relief not to have to endure the chatty, laughing, hosts who seem to populate the podcast world. Everything about these productions is miles ahead of pretty much every other true crime podcast.

    Another fantastic story
An intriguing story told in a meticulous, well laid out fashion. True crime that seems like fiction kept me engaged and treated from the go. TM always does a fantastic job of keeping me curious. Great job to the team who put ‘Erik’ together. I am not so patiently awaiting the next pod story you all have to share. Nice work!

    It’s HOLLY
Not one person on your team checked the way ya’ll say Holly…. You both mispronounced her name the entire time…. It’s Holly… not HOW-LEE, not Hal-EE. It’s HALL-E. You can’t even say her name correctly but you’re professional journalists? It’s good to know there’s no oversight.

    Excellent podcast
I just found this podcast and I absolutely love it. Great topic and the voice of the speaker is perfect so many times I cannot listen to podcasts cause I don’t like the way the person sounds. This is a must listen!

    The Problem With Erik
What an enthralling podcast! These guys went off the deep end and then deeper and deeper. Excellent journalism.

    Totally Addictive!!!
This podcast is such a grabber!! I count the days until a new episode is released.
  • Whoisthere1000
    Fascinating
I was genuinely shocked to see Charlie Sheen’s assistant popping up in here. Didn’t expect that turn of events! What a way to enter the world of private security and hear how the an overzealous team went so terribly wrong.

    The Problem with Erik
This is spectacular reporting, and a great, dark story.

    Don’t Tread On Me Ads
I don’t want to listen to Don’t Tread on Me ads before a podcast. Gross.
  • Jejimalada
    So good. Well done!!
These podcasts are so good. Well paced and the hosts are perfect. Thank you

Love all these snowflakes in the comments
Imagine not listening to a podcast bc a phrase that was coined during the American Revolution was used in an ad. Public schools have failed us.

    Season 4
Amazing story, great journalism. Please reconsider add choices.
  • lakevue
    Gives great in-depth coverage
Really enjoying The problem with Erik. I am getting much more detailed information than what the press covered. The involvement of informed individuals is a plus. Very well written. Now your ads on the other hand need to be changed. Does anyone at TM screen the ads? Major disappointment that you would promote garbage is extremely disappointing.
  • Belle 0929
    The ads
It’s hard to get past the “don’t tread on me” ads. All money isn’t good money….smh.
  • Sissarae27
    Texas!!!
Love the “Don’t Tread on me” advert!!! Don’t listen to the trolls.
  • emilyrose512
Binge worthy! Everything you want from a true crime podcast
The Problem With Erik is a summer, true crime blockbuster worth binging! Hosts do an incredible job unfolding the chilling details of the Erik Maund case and the tale of wealth, betrayal, and murder surrounding it. Hit men! An affair! Informants! It has it all.
  • LR1092
    Get over the ads…..
The show is amazing, I always binge when they release a new season, show is well made, ads… get over it! Or just stop being cheap and get the subscription so they don’t have to get outside advertising 🤷🏻‍♀️
  • Amy15243
    Season 4 is a ride
This season has a cool, off-the-wall tone, and the story goes down so many fascinating rabbit holes. It deals with generational wealth and insidious entitlement, and how toxic masculinity and ego create easy pathways to the dehumanization of others. The story is bizarre and has a lot of twists and turns, but I always appreciate it in true crime when the storytellers have us grapple with the real gravity of the loss of life, and they’ve succeeded here in allowing us to genuinely get to know Holly. Highly, highly recommend.
  • Carynn Jackson
    Regressive + Anachronistic
This podcast is tone deaf in so many ways. Are you kidding me with the “don’t tread on me” advertisements?? The real subject of this podcast should be the antiquated and harmful culture that underpins this case and breeds the type of behavior and outcomes in question. Yikes.
  • LawHaw82
Finally a True Crime podcast worth binging
I just want you to know I have searched for a podcast I love as much as watching Dateline. Skip, you’re amazing. The whole show is amazing and I can’t wait for more. I live in NC and never been to Texas, but this is the best podcast! Thank you for nailing it! Not to mention the music the music as the icing on the cake.
  • Mcasselberry
    Season 4
Great podcast, but extremely disappointed in the ad choices. The main ad is for some company that sells and buys gold and silver. The ad talks about a silver bar you can purchase that says “don’t tread on me”. Honestly I was shocked when I heard that. Typically Texas monthly leans more left than other Texas publications, this ad and especially the “don’t tread on me” was very unexpected and again, disappointing. If the ad stays the same in future episodes I don’t plan on listening anymore.
  • JDBwestcoast
    Don’t tread on me??
You advertise products with this? This is something on flags used by insurrectionists on Jan 6. Not cool. Offensive.
  • Marigoldilocks
    Texas Monthly always nails it
I always enjoy this podcast series, but as a third generation Austinite, this current series released in July 2024 is just the atmosphere and voices and memories of vintage Austin. It speaks to exactly the secrets and stories that locals can nod to and have a sense kinship about from growing up here.
  • Snappaloo
    Total turn off
Ads for “don’t tread on me” stuff. Says a lot about your show. And, you.
  • Dalpilotwife
    Season 2 empathizer
This a good story about false accusations & years until DNA is used to solve a crime. However, Brian’s empathy for a horrible criminal & justifying the SA/rape & murder of several women is plain wrong. I hope he doesn’t have daughters; as a women I find apologists for evil simply deplorable.
  • DisGuy65
    Drawn Out
I normally love Texas Monthly podcasts, but I felt like I spent 7 episodes listening to town gossip and the reporters chasing down rabbit holes. If you want to know about this case, save your time and listen to the “The Trail Went Cold” podcast covering this crime. You can learn just as much in that 45 minute episode as you will in this whole series.
  • MarnieMae
    Horrible “music” distracts from storytelling
I’ve only made it through 1 episode of Season 3, so not sure if the jarring, jangling synth guitar plays throughout all seasons, but it’s awful. Otherwise, the story seems well-produced. Too bad about the “music”.
  • tinytells
    More TM investigative podcasts please
All three seasons of this Texas Monthly investigative true crime podcast have been so well done. They’re thoughtful and sensitive, and their journalists leave room for nuance as they explore these stories. I’d really like more seasons.
  • Lobomama
    Is that guy eating cornnuts?
I love Texas Monthly, but can’t listen anymore because of all the paper bag crinkling and in episode three I think one of the cops was actually eating corn nuts during his interview. Maybe they left it in to demonstrate how the people involved in this case have no home training.
  • Yohannan
    Excellent reporting!
This unsolved crime is fascinating when put together in its totality and opens up so many more questions that were not addressed when Shane and Sally were murdered. I hope this podcast spurs forward a new investigation and that the more modern DNA analysis helps lead to the person or people involved in this crime. I think it can be solved, hopefully before the killer(s) die off themselves.
  • poshwithdar
    Well done!
This podcast was great! I hope it helps bring closure for the families and is no longer a cold case! Seems like it really can be!
  • ep1190
    Great podcast but…
I just can’t with all these mouth sounds
  • Cassparagus
    Seasons 1 & 2 are where it’s at.
Seasons 1 and 2 were really good! Season 3… is literally a study in 80s satanic panic. The first episode tries to say it isn’t… but yes it totally is. I will say that I LOVE the season 3 music. Seriously, give the music writer a bonus.
