The Secret Life Of Cookies

88

At The Secret Life of Cookies we know that kitchens are the heart of the home. They’re where families come together, where food comes from and where some of the best conversations take place. Kitchens are where the power is (even nasty President Jackson with his “kitchen cabinet” thought so), and where the baked goods are, which is why Marissa Rothkopf, the host, spends so much time in the kitchen. On The Secret Life of Cookies we will bring you into those conversations with some smart, interesting people who like to cook and have something to say. Pull up a chair up at our kitchen table, and join us as we cook and discuss the important issues of today.  Marissa Rothkopf is a professionally trained chef and food writer who has done everything from restaurant reviews for the New York Times to writing a column on kitchen gadgets for Newsweek. She teaches journalism at Montclair State University and gets nervous when asked to make custard.See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

    Unexpected and smart combination
Great show. Host has a really good rappor with the guests. I can read about our society but I can’t cook. This show gives me hope.

The Strategy of War: Past and Present Tense with guest General Mark Hertling
My first episode of “Secret Cookies” and I will be back! A thoughtful interview by Marissa Rothkopf with Gen. Hertling and I learned much new information. Definitely a follow!

    Talk and Food
    Interesting conversation and good recipes!

    I love this podcast but
It recently switched to giving a free portion and a subscription followup. The 5/7/22 ended with a pitch to hear the rest via subscription. Now I don’t mind a subscription for podcasts I really love but a heads up that this was going to be the new way to consume the whole podcast would have been nice. I will not be following up though.

    So much fun!
Marissa interviews great guests while walking you gracefully through her recipes. She’s very down to earth and funny. I look forward to this show every week.

    February 19 Episode
I listened to the episode 2 days after the invasion of Ukraine. Your comments about 90% of the Jewish people did not leave Europe before WW 2 profoundly struck me. Today we hear stories of the Ukrainian people could not believe they would ever be attacked. They too did not make plans. I pray for their safety and peace. I also pray for the safety of Russian citizens and hope they take to the streets to protest en mass. All of the episodes have been insightful and I have learned much and enjoyed. Thank you.

    Appointment listening
Each episode has a wide winning combination: interesting guest, interesting host, mouth-watering recipe, cooking tips, history, current events, pets (but not on the table) compelling discussion, and humor. It’s my companion for making weekend brunch but I could listen anytime.

    Your Best Friend’s Kitchen
Not only do you get great cookie recipes, you are treated to fun and informative conversations with people who are experts in their field. The wide range of guests, from Travis Akers to Kathy Griffin to Mary Trump begin to feel like friends as they openly share their insights and life experiences. It’s like you’re sitting in the warm and welcoming kitchen of your best friend, you really don’t want to leave and can’t wait to get back. And did I mention the cookies? (There’s also pie, and sometimes cocktails!) Give yourself the gift of 50 or so minutes a week with Marissa, you’ll be ever so glad you did!

    Entertaining and informative
A great conversation about how we’re doing! I felt like I was spending time with friends. Maybe best to have snacks at hand when listening!

    Fascinating and fun
This podcast is a joy to listen to. I’m not a baker, but I enjoy all of the conversations, whether they involve politics, psychology, or brownie-making tips. Marissa has a wide variety of people on the show, and is an excellent conversationalist. This show is both thought-provoking and a delightful balm for our times.

    Love this podcast
I’ve listened to every episode and can’t pick a favorite. Marissa never disappoints! The only downside is I’m left craving carbohydrates I really shouldn’t eat 😹

    Fun!
Loved the Joyce of Cooking episode, my first listen. Look forward to more like this! And Mary trump was great

    Recipes?
The conversations are great, but...I really am curious about Joyce’s frosting recipe? Is she going simple American buttercream (powdered sugar, no heat), or French buttercream (hit sugar syrup) or what?

    I miss friends
Remember parties? Going to a friend’s house, hanging in the kitchen, presumably helping cook, talking about everything and solving the world’s woes (if only they would take our advice!). This podcast is just that- a soothing, funny balm when we can’t gather physically but still want to be at the party. (And the sound quality has improved since the first episode). Adding to my favorites!

    My new favorite pod!
Cookies plus smart, funny conversation ... what could be better? The perfect accompaniment to baking or long walks.

A plate of warm brownies for your ears
I really enjoyed the flow of this podcast. While I’m sure questions are prepared in advance the conversation has a natural feel. It’s as though you’re listening to an honest conversation between friends with all the wonderful digressions one would expect. It’s well worth the time.

    A Great Cookie
Kitchens are places where family and friends gather to talk and spend quality time together. They are places where we get to know each other better. Which is why I listened to the Podcast. Baking and talking has to be good. What surprised me is the host helped me understand Kathy Griffin better. Precious to the podcast I had a negative opinion of her and by the end of their talk I had new respect for her. Bravo.
