Scene on Radio: Capitalism

10,364

Scene on Radio is a two-time Peabody-nominated podcast that dares to ask big, hard questions about who we are—really—and how we got this way. Previous series include Seeing White (Season 2), looking at the roots and meaning of white supremacy; MEN (Season 3), on patriarchy and its history; The Land That Never Has Been Yet (Season 4), exploring democracy in the U.S. and why we don’t have more of it; The Repair (Season 5), on the cultural roots of the climate crisis; and Season 6, Echoes of a Coup, the story of the only successful coup d'etat in U.S. history, in Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1898. Produced and hosted by John Biewen and created at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, Scene on Radio comes from the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University. Season 7, Scene on Radio: Capitalism, is produced in partnership with Imperative 21. The show is distributed by PRX.

The NPR banter is the only negative
Listening to Season 7 — excelllent, except for the chit/chat banter between the host and the co-host. Her obviously scripted and perky, painfully performative banter with the host adds no value and it often feels as if the co-host considers the audience kindergarteners who need to be talked down to as such. It’s distracting, insulting, and annoying.

    A world out of balance
Scene on Radio is a wonderful series that tries to explain why the world is in the mess it's in by considering inequalities. The seasons cover inequalities of (2-Seeing White) race , (3-Men) gender, and (7-Capitalism) wealth. Season 4 (The Land That Never Has Been Yet) explores how racial, gender, and economic inequality were part of the founding principles of the United States. Season 5 (The Repair) considers climate change as being due to some people's belief in the inferiority of nature and where that may have come from. Season 6 is outlier, it covers the specific history of the only successful coup in the US, part of the fraught racial strife after Reconstruction. This series focuses on the US and how it is affected by and has contributed to these problems. This podcast is often uncomfortable and depressing listening, but it does offer some hope.

    Engaging and enlightening
Incredibile reporting. Every aspect is well thought out and very enlightening. This should be taught in high school.

    Essential listening.
Scene on Radio consistently produces some of the most educational podcasts available concerning history and development and current effects of political forces such as racism, sexism, and—in this series—capitalism. It’s really, really, excellently produced, actually fun to listen to. Which is not what one expects from such deep and important political history and philosophy.

    Adopting the worlds view…
This country was founded on a free market. The problem isn't capitalism but monopolies and companies like the ones mentioned being allowed to lobby Congress and the taxes Congress continues to impose on the American people! All while giving themselves another raise! It's not the big-name businesses that are the problem, it's the continuous policy and bills that continue to wipe out the middle class and create further divide in our country!

    Incredible tectonic journalism
Just love Scene on Radio and the long-form journalism they continue to excel at. This season is such an incredible addition to the world. Every person in the world who wants to make the world a better place needs to listen to this and understand the ancestry of capitalism.

    I finally get it!
First, I’m excited Scene On is back! It’s been too long and I look forward to future seasons. Second, this season on Capitalism blew me away. I always knew something wasn’t right about the American system of capitalism, but not having majored in economics…ran away screaming from it…I never understood how we got to where we are in the first place. In this season John and Ellen brake it down from the historical origins of system to what we see today and what needs to change for our future. Thank you thank you thank!

    Brilliant season on capitalism
I’m so grateful to John and Ellen for this season on capitalism! Great, thought-provoking history in an engaging audio storytelling package. I’m learning so much and got my 13-year-old hooked, too.

    Incredibly insightful
So powerful that the culminating topic from the previous 6 seasons focuses on capitalism. And says so much about what we prioritized in the formation of our country. Thanks so much.

    Unbiased?
I love that this show is intriguing and spends a lot of time on history, especially the darker and little talked about parts of it. And I feel the show trying not to just talk about the negatives of capitalism, but their effort is a straw-man. I would love them to speak at length about the positives and the negatives. I love that they aren’t scared of upsetting a free-market audience (of which there are probably very few), but I wish they were also not afraid of upsetting their majority viewership of left-leaning folk. They may be asking hard questions if put toward at a Trump convention, but I would get a more authentic feel if they talked about both sides.

Every season is as good as the last
Nuanced, well researched and interesting looks at the structures that hold up our society.

Falling in and out of time, just to hide in life awhile
Accidentally stumbled onto this podcast. I usually like series that tell a long arc of a story or are about politics or some other topic or more linear history. The early episodes of this show are more eclectic. Give it a try - you will find something of interest!

    Just listen and learn
Put this on when you can pay attention and are open to having what you think you know challenged and expanded. Thank you to the team that creates every episode with care and intention and really great production. One of my favorite podcasts, and one of the podcasts that got me into loving podcasts!

    Gripping and nuanced
Scene on radio creates shows that are gripping and nuanced. They attack big concepts such as race, gender, and capitalism and leave you with a better understanding than when you started. I would recommend this show to anyone who is willing to have their beliefs challenged, or more so exposed.

    I love this podcast
I had a couple episodes of this podcast assigned as homework for a college course, and I haven’t been able to stop listening. I started on the third season about patriarchy, then to Seeing White, and now I’m at the end of The Land that Never Has Been Yet. I love the reporting in these episodes. It’s brings to light many things I didn’t know, and even more things that I’d heard of, but didn’t have all the context to understand it. I’d recommend this podcast to anyone who wants to explore deep issues in our society with a splash of humor and even hope.

The Seeing White series on Scene on Radio podcast
As a blind senior with higher ed degrees in musics of other cultures, this series was and is a profound introduction to the white man-made lie of race. My own and others’ study in undoing racism was kindled or, in my case, rekindled by George Floyd’s murder. The episodes make glaringly clear and inescapable the need for me and for us to learn and face the racist structures built by our forefathers and sustained by most of us white folk even if we claim ignorance. This series built trust for me to continue learning of the U. S.’s horrifying continuous history of exploitation. As I read the history of Beavers in “Beaverland” by Leila Philips, I think Scene on Radio could braid this history into our savage greed to create the cancer of unlimited extorting work from humans and materials from animals and all other layers of life.

Loved this podcast for years. Last series about Wilmington Massacre was superb. Guests, stories, moderators, details & possible action to take was both inspiring & necessary. Love and knowledge will overcome.

Honest history that poses way more questions than it answers! This podcast is brillant! Always engaging, informative, and bittersweet. It always addresses things that I have wondered about. Even when I think that I know something about the topic at hand, I always learn more!

    Scene on Radio is fantastic
I have learned so much from listening to this podcast and am thrilled that it has found a new home at the Kenan Center for Ethics at Duke. I’ve listened to all the series and just found out how to leave a review The latest show, Echoes of a Coup is just as excellent as all the previous ones. It presents a view of the Wilmington Race Massacre in expansive context. I wish all the people still brainwashed by the “Lost Cause” narrative would listen to it.

Informative. Spoken with clarity and no unspoken, ignorant bias. Do you need education on your journey to anti-racism? I did. Yes, this brown girl, living in Alabama, from Maryland. Yes, I did. And - I am a little further down the road. Join me. Listen to this podcast.

So glad to have the show back
Just the first episode of this season has revealed history I didn’t know or knew incorrectly. Highly recommend.

    Tears of joy…
I cried legitimate tears of joy when the new episode dropped today. I can’t really say how important this series is to shaping my understanding of the world. This series is quintessential to America understanding how to interpret our past and present to understand the best past forward, and up. If you haven’t listened to “Seeing White” or the season regarding democracy, queue them. Really, all of the seasons continue to be relevant and of great import.

    Moving the Conversation Forward
As a white woman and cleric of many years, praying for and working toward dismantling racism, I thought I was getting it and, in a way, I was but my daughter shared this show with me. A new lens dropped in! I saw those white colonial pilgrim candles on the Thanksgiving table in a new light after listening to this show! I’m not sure what I’ll do with the Priscilla and John Alden… but I am sure I’ll never see them the same way again. What a gift this podcast is as we keep moving forward to brighter, more just, and more peace-filled places.

Seeing White should be required listening for all white people
Seeing White on Scene on Radio should be required listening for all white-bodied people in the US. Knowing the true history of how we got to where we are in this country is CRUCIAL to dismantle these systems that oppress those who do not look white. We don’t have a “race” problem… we have a “white supremacy” problem- and this show really unpacks so much of what whiteness is taught not to see. Thank you

Seeing White from 2017 is FANTASTIC
The limited series that debuted shortly into Trump’s term as president is so extremely relevant six years later. This is the history that is missing (gee I wonder why?) from our schools. Seeing White is a series that needs to be listened to by every single person that has been classified as “white” by this society. Thank you Scene on Radio for this valuable content!

    Seen on radio seeing white
Just plain excellent the only complaint I have about it is that it’s hard to navigate to the right next episode. However it’s worth the trouble. Thank you for doing this series

Hard but honest look at the American project
The series brings to light difficult and frequently obscure details about American history and our nation’s foundational principles that are disturbing and disruptive to the way we see ourselves as a nation. The series highlights episodes of our history we’ like to forget about and traces their roots and how, like weeds in Eden, they infest our body politic and economic system today. Thanks for this clear-eyed examination who we are as a nation. Honest examination, dissemination, and acknowledgement are the first steps toward finally realizing the aspirations for nationhood that never really were there to start with.

    White people - must listen
Take some time to look back, listen throughout and unpack the meaning of whiteness. Impactful, powerful and imperative. Something has to change and it’s on us white peoples to do our own work. What does it mean to be white and how can we undo what was literally built to keep power away from others.
  • dellagamma
    Mandatory listening for white people
I cannot recommend the Seeing White season highly enough. I’ve listened to it several times and each time I learn more and digest the information more deeply. Biewen approaches this challenging material with humility and thoughtfulness and does not shy away from tough subjects. Each episode features a conversation with scholar and activist Chenjerai Kumanyika who brings deep insight and perspective as well as his extensive knowledge of history. The pair has a great rapport, and their conversations are filled with respect, humanity, and humor. The episodes also feature guests such as Nell Irvin Painter and Ibram X. Kendi who bring their expertise to the various subjects discussed. This is a must-listen for (all people, but especially for) white people who truly want to understand and be accountable for their part in perpetuating white supremacy culture and systematic racism. The other seasons are fantastic as well- particularly “Land that Never Has Been Yet” and “Men”.

A MUST listen. Thoughtful & comprehensive
I am late to the party for "Scene on Radio" and I am so very thankful that I found it at last. I am listening to Season 2 "Seeing Whiteness" and am finding it incredibly informative and thought provoking. Well told, well edited, a skillful weaving of scholars and historians. I am looking forward to working through all the seasons.

    Essential history for ALL Americans
Thank you for this in-depth podcast on such relevant history and analysis. Wish everybody in our country knew these things - would make our country so much healthier, stronger, and happier.

Thank you! and a small suggestion
Thank you so much for providing this incredibly well researched and produced podcast. It has helped me to better understand the intersections of so many global issues. I only wish there were less (or none) of the sly, bitter, backhanded comments against conservatives. While they don’t personally assault me, they only serve to divide and make it less likely that someone on the fence might join the cause
