TROJAN WAR: THE PODCAST

398

Trojan War: The Podcast is a serialized telling of the stories that together comprise the epic story of the Trojan War. From The Judgement of Paris through The Face that Launched a Thousand Ships to Achilles’ Heel and Beware of Greeks Bearing Gifts, this epic story has it all! Each podcast episode features one self-contained episode in the overall story arc, followed by about fifteen minutes of conversation and commentary on the compelling and provocative contemporary ideas that emerge from the stories. The tone of Jeff Wright, the storyteller, is modern, engaging, and informed. He is comic, occasionally irreverent, and always entertaining.

    Amazing
So informative and engaging! I have learned so much and been entertained at the same time. Jeff Wright is an amazing storyteller.

    Easy to follow
I loved this podcast. I often hear a voice and how someone relays a story of history and skip the podcast immediately. This one held my attention. Not only did I learn but it was entertaining and he tells so anyone can understand. That is remarkable and makes it easy to follow. I wish he did more on Alexander the Great or Cleopatra or even Odysseus. I’d listen to all of his stories.

A brilliant mix of literature & history
I follow quite a few history podcasts and have always been interested in Greek history & literature. This podcast is a beautiful mix of the retelling of the full story of the Trojan War (not just the Iliad) in easy to understand language while also providing the historical context of the story. What I enjoyed most was the last 20 minutes or so (he provides a brief break & remarks in the show notes) a deeper analysis of some of the ideas brought up in the story. Fate vs Free Will, why DID Helen leave Sparta with Paris (alternative theories), Bronze Age honor culture, & how it affects the story, etc. If you had to read the Iliad in school & was bored to death—-LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST. If you love hearing alternative views of well known characters—-LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST. If you enjoy intersection of history & literature, again, LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST. I binged listened to this 24 hour podcast in a few days. Check it out. You won’t regret it.

I wish he could tell me every classic story
Jeff is by far the best, most captivating storyteller I’ve encountered. Having listened to both the Trojan War and Odyssey podcasts, that’s about 50 hours of podcast and it ended too soon! I sneakily played just part of one episode for my dad while we were driving, and in a moment of silence in the car, he tuned in and was almost immediately hooked. How many times could you tell a 50-hour story, have someone tune-in at ANY random point in the story, and know they’ll be interested. Now that I’m done I can hardly get myself to listen to my other podcasts, because they’re not the world that Jeff gave us. Jeff, if you read these reviews, I request the Aeneid and The Divine Comedy! I know they’re totally out of your wheelhouse but you’d make them shine nonetheless.

    Trojan War the Podcast
I was not interested in Greek mythology or the Trojan war when I began listening. My daughter was playing the podcast on a recent visit and it was the fun, witty telling of the story by Jeff Wright that sucked me in. I love this Podcast. I would say it has renewed my interest in Greek mythology - barely remembering my studies of the Iliad from high school. I look forward to the next podcast: Odyssey: The Podcast. In his podcast, Jeff recommends reading the Odyssey yourself. I am so into this story now, I will probably do that as well. But not sure if I need it told to me by a storyteller or not. Great, fun podcast which I highly recommend. But it’s not for falling asleep to!

So well done and entertaining 5 stars
Jeff Wright the storyteller really brings the story of the Iliad to life. It’s witty and engaging, but at same time I felt it was respectful to the source material. One of best historical podcasts I have come across also does the Odyssey which is equally brilliant.

Best podcast I have ever heard
I have been in to Greek mythology for a while now, but I did not Know much about the story of the “Trojan war” before. Then when I discovered the podcast I was immediately hooked and I could not stop listening.

    An Hour a Night
I found Jeff's podcast mucking through Quora. I began to listen every night after dinner and the dishes put away. You don't have to be a kid to be told a story. He really brings this to life and his 21st century expressions sprinkled in, don't detract from the tale, they enhance it. It's the greatest story you will ever hear and it has every human emotion you can think of. Jeff spins a great yarn and you'll imagine yourself relaxing in a Greek villa in the Iron Age, listening to a great bard reciting the tale. Who needs video?

    History teachers need this
I am a new history teacher, just needing background on everything. Podcasts help do much! This one is wonderful. I love his voice and stories. So easy to listen to this storyteller!

    Entertaining and erudite!
    Great show.

An amazing work of art that engages the listener
This podcast tells the whole story in a beautifully detailed narrative that explains so much about these great but ancient works of literature. I cannot recommend these highly enough. I learned so much so readily through Jeff Wright’s engaging storytelling. The background is particularlyoverlandtening; the Illiad begins very much in the middle of the story and even if one understands, through the various translations, what the work actually says plainly, there is a lot missing. Jeff’s fantastic podcast fills in all the gaps and makes both works a continuous, coherent story.

I’m addicted to this show. That is all.

Hear the story of the Trojan War like the ancient Greeks did
I love listening to stories - perhaps we all have some ancestral memory of how information was passed down from human to human for millennia. Jeff is a wonderful story teller. One can imagine him in a different age traveling from town to town, telling this tale that he loves so much. The story is always riveting, sometimes funny, often tragic, and still has lessons for us today. You will eagerly await each installment.

Great listen! Starting Odyssey now :)
This is a great listen! it’s like book club, but for all stories Trojan war. The story is great (of course. Stories don’t last 3000 years if they’re not great) and Jeff is a fun storyteller who clearly really enjoys what he does. I like learning about the different versions of some parts of the story, usually in the post-story commentaries. The ones that stand out to me right now are the different ways Helen is portrayed, as well as “was there really a Trojan horse and if not what happened?” and also Jeff’s dive into what it was like for the soldiers in the Trojan horse if there was one :) Also I particularly like the section of this podcast that covers the Iliad. I just listened to the Iliad earlier this year and it’s tough to follow without someone to discuss it with and I feel like this podcast gives me that. :) I think I’m going to re-listen to it because I have more points at which I can check in with my own understanding now. Thanks Jeff!

    Absolutely great!
One of the best podcasts about the whole War, before and after as well! It’s a “dramatic” retelling of the story so if you are put off about that stuff it may not be your preferred choice but I say give it a chance nonetheless! The narrator you can tell is very passionate about what he is saying which makes it all the better! Absolutely great!

    A Timeless Tale
Really brings the world of ancient Bronze Age Greece alive. The themes of fate, love, and war are all timeless and the story is easy to follow, told in a modern way. My only complaint would be that I would've liked to hear more of the poetics from the early tellings. Let's hear Jeff sing of arms and the man, and talk about the wine-dark sea.

    The whole story
Remarkable synthesis of Homer (whose Iliad limited itself to only a few weeks in the conflict) and numerous other source to produce a comprehensive, brilliantly told version of the Trojan War saga.
  • JGotts33
    Jeff is Brilliant!
Jeff is an incredible storyteller and he does such an amazing job weaving all of the strands together to produce this epic story! Jeff also goes a step further and always provides important context or background information that the listener needs to truly understand the Trojan War epic.

    Epic
This podcast series has been an epic resource for my family to learn the whole story of the Trojan War. We always enjoy the post-story commentary too - very educational!
  • Bobby Bronson
    One of my favorites
This podcast series is excellent, and Jeff is an amazing story teller. I haven’t found any other shows covering Greek myth that I enjoy as much as this and his telling of them odyssey! Superb stuff

    A Fascinating Story, Brilliantly Told
My husband and I are making plans to visit Greece next year, and so I’ve been diving into the history and mythology of ancient Greece in preparation. That’s how I found Jeff’s podcast on the Trojan War. I’ve been entertained, moved, and educated by his wonderfully contemporary and fresh re-telling of this epic story. Even if you’re not going to Greece, I highly recommend it!
  • skar3
    Excellent rendition of Trojan war.
    So smooth.

    Such great storytelling
I’m late to the party and only just found this podcast but I’m seriously loving it! You’re a fantastic story teller and I’m dreading the Day I finish the series. Please tackle other stories!

    This podcast is a treasure
Jeff is a fabulous story-teller and a top-notch history/mythology nerd. The Trojan War epic has been, for most of human history, transmitted from generation to generation orally. I could not be more delighted that I just got to participate in that tradition. I just finished the series, and I will be moving on to his telling of The Odyssey in short order. Do yourself a favor and try an episode or two of this podcast. You'll come away with vivid visions of Bronze Age life and insightful reflects on human nature that are (sometimes disturbingly) relevant for our own times. Jeff, thank you very much for your work. I can't wait to see what you've got in store for us next on that wine-dark sea!

    Excellent - 4 thumbs up!
I have, for as long as I can remember, been very intrigued by Greek mythology. I’ve dug into books and the internet just wandering and learning. From all the movies and things I’ve read and seen this is the GREATEST telling of these events. This is the greatest bard this side of the century. He breaks it down in such a way that is interesting but yet so informative. It deserves a 3rd listen. Best version of the story I’ve heard so far. Historically accurate and on the edge of your seat entertaining.!
  • BigFanSJ
    Love it!
I am 17 episodes in and have begun feeling angst knowing that this series, wonderfully told, will end soon. So entertaining, interesting and fun to listen to. Shared with friends who love it too. Thank you for producing this!

So much fun. Not stuffy at all.
I was somewhat reluctant to start this podcast because it seemed like a topic that might be stuffy. Or that it might be amateurish. But those things could not be farther from the truth. A fun story captivatingly told. Give it a listen.
  • Turkey rage
    Fantastic
This podcast is worthwhile because it is delivered with all of the overlying interpretations lined on top of each other without losing the narrative. You hear the tale and you also learn how others heard it at the same time. Love it.

    Absolutely beautiful
Just finished the whole series. An absolutely beautiful retelling of the Trojan war epic. A must listen to anyone interested in this epic story.
  • Scrumdog
    A must listen
Most people do not realize that the Iliad does not tell the entire story of the Trojan war beginning with the banquet in Olympus and ending with the sack of Troy. Jeff has compiled the entire story from dozens of different sources recited, remembered, etc. in the classical world over the course of centuries. A few notes for him. There are some mispronunciations and some grammar and usage errors in his podcast. The verb “prophesy” ends with a long I sound. The noun “prophecy“ ends with a long E. Sounds picky, I know. But I taught eighth grade many years ago and even then was concerned about the decline in basic grammar. Not a reason to skip the podcast which is fabulous.
  • Yephurdur
    Well told
Really enjoyed this. Best way to consume a self-contained story of the Trojan War
  • devyani.mahajan
    Great podcast!
Deeply enjoyable and informative podcast! I started listening to it as an accompaniment to my archaeology course, and it really brought the Late Bronze Age to life!

    Best Podcast Ever
Great work Jeff I congratulate you on this amazing podcast. From the very first podcast I was hooked I have listened to it two times now and listened to your odyssey Podcast also two times. Thank you for this podcast it was very informative and fun I hope you make more Podcasts. Thanks again. Bye, for now!😊👋
  • Wake up early
Smug attitude of author combines with annoying stutter
I understand that the stutter is an affectation. It is the theme of this podcast. The author talks to the audience like they were babies, and tells the story of the ancients as though they were all benighted idiots who lack his wonderful insight.
  • j sheezy
    Excellent
    Very entertaining and informative.

Podcast review - the Trojan War
Wow, great job, Jeff knows the topic like the back of his hand. Highly recommend this podcast, the detail and storytelling is top notch! Can’t want to jump into The Odyssey!
  • galt67
    Fantastic, entertaining presentation!
For ANYONE who thinks 'Homer is boring', difficult, etc., I encourage you to listen to this! The presenter is SUPERB (and HILARIOUS) with his modern 'take' on The Illiad. Even you never 'read' the book, this podcast offers a comphrehensive feel of it. Bottom line: Give in 15 minutes and you'll be hooked!

    Great Storytelling
I really enjoyed listening to Trojan War the Podcast. The post story commentaries gave me a better understanding on the topics that stood out in each podcast. The way the story was told kept me interested and craving more of the story and to find out more about the Ancient Greek and Roman civilization.

    Brilliant
Brilliant story telling of an epic which set the groundwork for so much western literature. I love the information shared at the last third of every episode to provide historical and literary context.
  • Mrj1981
    Staggeringly Good
This podcast (and its follow-up, on the Odyssey) were such a pleasure to listen to! Jeff knows what he’s doing when it comes to piecing through varied and conflicting ancient sources and creating a coherent and entertaining narrative of his own (which is the same task that any ancient bard would have undertaken). Each episode comes in two parts; the first is the story itself, then the second half (which you are welcome to turn off if you’d like, but I can guarantee you won’t want to) gives some background on the area just covered and walks through some of the nuances involved in the story. I cannot recommend this re-telling of THE foundational piece of European literature highly enough. It’s many hours of listening - but that’s a good thing!

    An epic telling
This podcast is truly worthy of a five star rating. It captivates, tugs at your heartstrings, and weaves a tale that stays with you long after the podcast is over. For anyone who is looking for a great story and a masterful storyteller give this a try you will not regret it.

    New listener, but great ending?
Late edit: It. Was. Epic. Perfect story teller, great story. I 100% look forward to ANY future podcasts this man may produce. Loved it and I want more, ASAP. (Also the first podcast I have decided to donate to!) Podcast is uploaded different than any other podcast and I should have noticed it. So, I listened to the last episode first. Figured it out and am starting from the beginning. Can tell already he is well spoken, knowledgeable, and has researched greatly. Excited for a new pod to start!!!

    Addicted to listening
Never thought I’d be “addicted” to a podcast about the Trojan war, but here I am? Some of the best to listen to story telling I’ve ever heard.

Fun, engaging and bingeworthy- a Canadian Demodocus!
Jeff’s retelling of the stories around Troy is a delightful trip back through the names, characters, and wacky adventures of Ancient Greek myth and legend. Following the bard tradition, Jeff brings the stories alive for a modern audience with his unique take and insights into human nature. OK, I listened to 7 episodes in a row yesterday so I thought I owed him this review—now, back to the binge! I hope nothing bad happens to Iphigenia lol...

Story Telling as an Art Form from Classic Medium
Great Story Telling. This is not the final word on any of the legends that are woven into this PodCast. It is a story telling as an art form built from an Epic Lego set.
