Faith Matters

1,122

Faith Matters offers an expansive view of the Restored Gospel, thoughtful exploration of big and sometimes thorny questions, and a platform that encourages deeper engagement with our faith and our world. We focus on the Latter-day Saint (Mormon) tradition, but believe we have much to learn from other traditions and fully embrace those of other beliefs.

I feel seen in the best way possible
I’ve never felt so seen, heard and understood as I did when listening to “when church gets hard” episode. So much gratitude to this podcast for what it teaches & for the hard feelings that it validates. Thank you!

    Arthur Brooks
This was a fantastic interview. Brooks masterfully explains the neuroscience in a way that is easy to understand, faith-filled way. It was beautiful, insightful and deeply impactful for me.

    Variety at its best!
I am so happy to have discovered Faith Matters! The high caliber of the podcasts and the topics is beyond amazing. Loved Eboo Patel, (I think when we all get together in the Kingdom we will find that God, by what ever name he has been given by men, will be the one true God.) Terrell Givens, Thomas McConkie as so many more. Addressing the spiritual and temporal challenges of our daily lives with a focus on the scriptures is so needed and you are providing a pathway to healing and peace for so many… Thank you so very much! Love
This podcast is so full of love and positivity. In a day where we are losing some of the things that are most important, Faith Matters helps us to remember what really matters.

    Women at church was overkill
I don’t usually care to leave a negative review. I know everyone is in different places and doing their best in that place. So many of the podcasts you release walk a line very carefully between principles of faithfulness and apostasy. This one seemed to actually step right over that precarious line. It was disappointing and as hard as I tried to feel the spirit while listening to it, it would not come. I love the idea of women in the church, of each of us understanding their own priesthood power and their sacred role as women. this felt more like whining and contention, and really lack of understanding of how God chooses to do things. Are there opportunities for change and how we do things? Most certainly! Is it hard to have faith in these times today? Definitely! But Faith is the first principal of the gospel and it would’ve been good to hear a bit about sitting in that faith and patience when we don’t quite understand the higher way of a perfect God

    Pure Religion
So refreshing to hear pure religion without the judgment, scarcity and other tactics organized religion can often employ

    Faith Matters!
The Faith Matters podcast and the Restore Conference are a welcome safe harbor from the turmoil of the world, and creates a safe space for addressing some of the big questions of faith, the LDS faith and church doctrine, practices and policy. FM invites contemplation about the important distinctions between cultural practices and the gospel of the Savior Jesus Christ. I’m invited to become closer to Jesus by participating in Restore, and the feelings of welcoming, love and acceptance of where and when you are in your faith is a creation that can only come from the spirit of the Lord.

    Patrick Mason
The interview with Patrick Mason and his Rawanda experience is one of the best podcasts from any platform I have heard. Such great insight that he shared and so real. Thank you.

    So Faith Promoting
This podcast has helped me as I’ve worked through my own faith crisis and as I’ve witnessed others experience faith crisis. Every time I listen I feel inspired by the deeply thoughtful conversation and insights. This podcast has helped me so much with struggles I have with my faith and with church, I’m so grateful I found it when I did. I feel my faith is stronger and deeper than it has ever been, and this podcast has been a big part of that for sure.

I love every episode I listen to
I love this podcast so much! I love Tim & Aubrey as hosts- they are so real & vulnerable & willing to dig in deeper to subjects or questions that can be confusing. I dealt with a mental health crisis the last few years & a huge part of that was needing to mature in my spiritual understanding. I needed to evolve from a childlike perspective into a more complex perspective, willing to face topics that we might not have answers to. This has helped me better understand & love those who have a different lived experience than me. It has helped me learn that Heavenly Father & Heavenly Mother & Jesus Christ & the Holy Ghost love us unconditionally. That was strangely hard to accept & believe- & to learn how to love myself unconditionally. I had been scared of how messy growth was & so I resisted it, until I hit breaking point. And suddenly I had to grapple with these deep insecurities within me. Every episode I have listened to resonates so, so deeply with what I have learned the last few years on my mental, emotional & spiritual growth journey, which can be summed up in: faith & love over fear. Thank you Tim, Aubrey & every guest for your vulnerability & openness to have these important discussions. Tim- when you got emotional in Thomas McConkie’s interview, it resonated so much. Thank you both!

    Good Perspective
I’ve listened to this podcast for a couple of years. I’m slow to rate podcasts unless they consistently deliver good content and this one does. Some podcasters seem to like to hear themselves talk. Tim and Aubrey seem genuinely interested in learning from their guests and ask great questions. If you are looking to expand faith within the LDS tradition, this is a good way to do it. Good perspectives. Not always easy or comfortable answers.

    Faith Does Matter!
Love this podcast - loved hearing from David Butler, feeling his love and joy in the a gospel and in our Father and the Savior. Love this podcast every week. The thoughtful discussions and willingness to seek after all things good and good people from many walks of life truly blesses my life!

    You saved my faith
Thoughtful. Academic. Intellectual. Practical. Life changing. This is exactly what I have needed to help me think through the issues and nuances with the church and my faith. Discussions at church rarely cover these topics, and I’m indebted to Tim and Aubrey for approaching them with care and fearlessness.

    Episode 211
I have only listened to one episode, but that one episode was so good that I am giving the whole podcast 5 Stars. I am sharing the Come as As You Are episode with Jen & Sam Norton with everyone. The message that they shared is 100% the message that we need our youth and the leaders of out youth to understand and embrace. I have worked with the youth for years, and I have a deep love for each of them. I want them to feel the love of our Savior and Father in Heaven the way Sam & Jen explain it so eloquently in this episode. Also already added Sam’s book to my Amazon cart.

    Great conversation with Valerie Hamaker
This is such a useful conversation about faith journeys. This needs to be discussed much more often than it is. Valerie has a unique perspective since she cares about families so deeply. We need to be hearing more from her since she has courage to speak truth to power!

    Helping families navigate faith journeys
Loved this episode with Valerie Hamaker, marriage and family therapist. Her work exemplifies her true desire to help bridge the gap of pain, misunderstanding, fear and disconnection within relationships experiencing different faith journeys. Appreciate the practical scenarios discussed as well as getting to the heart of beautiful, true theology: love, compassion and connection. Great questions posed by Aubrey and Tim and helpful answers with practical implementation by Valerie. So grateful for her work in this space! More of this, faith matters, please!

    Amazing Resource
I absolutely love this podcast! It has been an invaluable resource of knowledge and information that I haven’t found anywhere else. I love the variety of guests as well as the hosts Tim and Aubrey. I really appreciate that they ask profound and practical questions and share vulnerable parts of their lives. It has helped expand my mind and my faith.

    Great podcast!
I love the open conversations and views. Some of my favorites are on here. I just listened to the episode with Valerie Hamaker. There is a very quiet and soft division within the church and this episode is showing some real issues. Red flags that church leaders have warned against since the restoration. Another real reason we must try to have the Spirit with us. I try to keep an open mind and did listen to the entire episode with Valerie. It was tough. Some things I agree with but some I cannot stand with her on. I listen to those I disagree with. If they’re sincere, I come away from that interaction at least not hating them but more fully understanding where they’re coming from. Even though I may absolutely disagree. I will teach my children to walk in the light and truth and when they are older I will have shown them the way. It is then up to them to continue and with my guidance and counsel as they allow. I will absolutely not let my children try every whim and endless path that they come across. Especially with the confusion of today that continues to change and leave devastation in its wake. Having teenagers I understand it’s a fine line sometimes. But we have standards, guidance and the Spirit to help. We should love everyone no matter their choices. But we do not support wickedness. Love the sinner. Hate the sin. There is a clear difference that the world wants to blur the lines on. Again I agreed with a lot of what she said. But there are some real concerns

    Valerie's episode was 10/10
Loved the therapist Valerie's thoughts esp on parenting and the ideal to have loving and knowing your child be more important than any belief system. (Which is paradoxically a belief in itself- love over ideology).

    Ep. 224 is AMAZING!
Thank you for having Valerie Hamaker on your show. There were some honest, real, and tremendously helpful thoughts and practices discussed. I’m sharing this with my parents. I feel like she really cares and she really gets it. Gives me hope.

Used to be…My church… after church …but no longer
Update: I am so sad to say that I no longer find this podcast interesting. Did I change? Or did you? It feels like you have lost your courage to explore and dig deep in the places and ways you once did. I miss it. I started listening to Faith Matters at the beginning of the pandemic. It saved me then and continues to save me. I have found a home here, where all of my struggles, questions, and realities are validated and I have found a path of hope, joy and light in navigating it all. Thank you for your wonderful work.

    Growing and Learning
Every time I listen I am inspired and uplifted. Sometimes seeing and processing things a little differently then I was before. My faith journey has changed from one of fear and perfection, never thinking I could do or be enough to be loved by God. I am now filled with peace, joy and excitement. Trusting in Him and His beautiful plan for all of us. Thank you for the beautiful stories, thoughts, encouragement and inspiration.

    I love this podcast
Every time I listen to one of these podcasts I feel stretched and connected. I’m trying to gather information for my calling but really just want to understand others and their journey, so I can expand my own understanding and journey. Thank you for the topics, the guests, and the space for sharing and growing together. I feel all of it and it is so Christ focused and amazing to me. Thank you!

    The Amen Effect
This episode was absolutely beautiful. I LOVE the history of Jewish tradition explained and the insight and inspiration it brought to me. My adopted Grandfather always said, “you can pretend to care, but you can’t pretend to show up.” I strive to live by this and am trying to show my kids the beauty and importance of this idea. This episode is fantastic and I can’t wait to share.

    Future of women at church
What a great episode! The aspects of the issue that were discussed were so thoughtful and well-voiced. Thank you, Faith Matters, for the space to contemplate together this important topic.

    Future of Women at Church
Thank you for the beautiful, thoughtful, and spirit driven conversation on a difficult topic within our faith community. It was refreshing to listen to and uplifting for many who feel women’s voice are not being heard. We can do better to embrace the amazing God given talents women have in our church so they can better utilize these gifts to strengthen men, women, and children in and outside of our communities.

Provides the words I need to understand my faith
The first Faith Matters podcast I listened to transformed my trajectory because it gave me the words to finally understand what what happening to my faith. Subsequent episodes continue to provide additional language to explain to myself and others where I am. Prior to finding Faith Matters I was confused and didn’t understand what was going on with my faith and I was starting to become frustrated with the Latter-day Saint tradition. Beginning to understand what is happening to me has allowed me to come to peace with the tradition I’ve grown up in and find a place in it that works for me.

    A breath of fresh air
I love this show and look forward to each new episode. And then I share them with friends and family. To steal the words of your latest guest, Bob Rees, “ “I just think the dialogue that you're creating around so many important subjects on Faith Matters and the beautiful things that are being published …you're giving me these jewels and a lot of them by people I don't even know or haven't heard of...This is a wonderful thing happening at a time in the history of the Restoration where I feel it's really inspired and very needed. And so I just applaud all of you who have made this happen.” My spirits are lifted each time I hear a unique perspective from your guests who are mostly faithful members of our spiritual community. It is so refreshing to hear from individuals who have different viewpoints and experiences (don’t we all?) and who do not feel constrained to just regurgitate the “official party line” of the Church but are willing to speak their own minds in the most loving and respectful ways! Please keep up this great work! We all need more of it!

Must listen if you value nuance as an LDS member
I love the perspectives of the various guests on the podcast. As someone who exists on the inside of the edge of the LDS faith I really love how Tim and Aubrey approach the nuance found in trying to maintain membership in the church but hold to those ideals that sometimes feel like they grate against Church teaching. The Grant Hardy episode entitled "Tough Love from the Book of Mormon," is a personal favorite, as are any of the Patrick Mason episodes. I highly recommend this podcast to those who are more heterodox members of the LDS Church.

Inactive LDS, but LOVE Faith Matters
I am a devout Christian, but I stopped being active in the LDS church in my late 20s, I am now 43 with a beautiful Christian family and we are devout. I found my journey taking a slight turn in my late 20s when I was meeting my husband. We were able to find a home in a local Christian church and it has been an amazing experience. I still feel at my core, I am a latter-day saint, I just know God needed me to, take a little detour on my journey for the trajectory of my life. These faith matters podcasts have been the biggest blessing in my life. They have been such a beautiful resource with so many soul expanding, thought provoking gems. I am so grateful to have come across this podcast and feel closer to heavenly father and Jesus because of it. Thank you, Tim and Aubrey and the whole Faith Matters team.

    A true gem
What a gift your podcast has been to me. I often find myself recommending it to others. I was particularly struck by the Come as you are episode. I keep on waiting for you to interview Fatima Salah and Margaret Olsen Hemming about their Book of Mormon For the Least of These series. I love your podcast and I love these books and would be thrilled to have them come together. It seems like such a perfect fit as we are studying the Book of Mormon this year.

    A Better Saint
This podcast has helped me become a better saint. So many times after I’ve listened to an episode I’ve gone away thinking deeply about what I heard. I love how they are willing to deal with the tough topics of my faith and help me to learn new ways of thinking and doing. Keep it coming!

This podcast means so much to me...
It feels a little odd to write a public comment on something so close to my heart — how do you communicate with any kind of weight and depth in this format? — but I feel like I owe it to Faith Matters to contribute another 5-stars. All I can say is that I recommend the podcast to everyone I know, I look forward to every episode... each one changes me and provides healing and hope to my family. Thank you so much for doing this important work with so much grace, meekness, and courage.

For LDS people who do not “know”
I am an LDS person who struggles with her testimony and may never “know” for certain this church is God’s true church in earth. I want to keep attending church, though, and it is hard for me to feel accepted in my congregation and comfortable with my questions and doubts when I am around so many other congregants who say they know this church is true “without a shadow of a doubt.” This podcast has given me a place to hear from others who understand where I am and believe there is value in questions. I feel much less alone when I listen to this podcast weekly. Also it is a pleasure to listen to this program because it is *so* well done!

    Highly recommend!
I look forward to each new episode. I love how they aren’t afraid to discuss any topic and especially controversial or uncomfortable topics within the church, and they do it in a very constructive, classy, and positive way. So many things that I have struggled with within “church culture”, they have discussed on their show and have given me so much insight and many times been an answer to prayer. They have definitely helped me keep my faith and have helped to strengthen my faith- because of the discussions they are willing to have- which has led me to have a greater desire to seek personal Revelation on topics I wrestle with and to lean into my Savior instead of push him away. I always feel the spirit and feel like they are helping me gain more pieces of the puzzle of life.

Thank You for Stretching My Mind and Strengthening My Faith
This podcast has been life-changing for me. I appreciate having a listening forum that both uplifts and challenges the LDS culture/community. There’s a palpable tension between conscience and LDS practice, cultural traditions and individual perceptions. I love how Tim and Aubrey Chaves explore this tension yet never waver in confirming their faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I’m coming to Faith Matters quite late, that is, I just discovered it this year—2024 so I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. I’ve listened to about 50 podcasts so far. Thank you so much!
