Adventures in New America

510

Adventures in New America is the first sci-fi, political satire, Afrofuturistic buddy comedy, serialized for New Americans in a new and desperate time.

Set a few years in the future, Adventures in New America follows the escapades of two mismatched African-New-American best friends — fat, lonely, curmudgeon IA and lesbian sneak-thief Simon Carr — who take on a series of increasingly wild heists to get quick cash to pay for IA’s medical treatment while attempting to survive the wilds of New New York City — and a secret cabal of Tetchy Terrorist Vampire Zombies from outer space. Intrigued? Good! Frequently, there will be musical numbers... and radical reflections on our dangerous, beautiful, heart-pounding world.

    Okay 👍🏽
It wasn’t bingeworthy, but still cool. I’ll take my Afro-Futurism wherever I can get it.

    Waste of time
This story is all over the place. I liked the idea, however the execution is horrible.

    Hell yes!!!
Tales from New America is an amazing podcast. It is a wonderful dip into Afrofuturism and horror. Loved every minute, including the interviews at the end. I can not wait for the next season.

Edited Title: I can’t stop thinking about New America
I love this show!! I hope more comes out oig. A+ on everything! Update. May 5 2020 Coming back to check I have reviewed shows I appreciate the talent and work put into. What happens next!?! Hehehhehe. Love your voice actors too! Y’all are talented. Pretty sure there is one from Detroit! Hello from metro area, lol. To all of you! I hope you’ll be able to continue this story. A+

    I Love It!!!
I literally was buzzing with excitement and joy by the third episode and that doesn’t happen often!!!

    Modern BlackXploitation
Her speaking patterns mimic racist mammy films from the 1950’s. AAVE doesn’t sound like that, she talks like uncle Ruckus from the Boondocks. It’s like all those racist films that came out in the 1970’s, just give her a Cadillac and pistol to pull out of her Afro puffs. I get it because for hundreds of years Black stereotypes have been an entertainment source. It’s more American than the flag and apple pie at this point. If you can’t think of nothing funny just combine as many Black stereotypes as you can together and people will love it!

    Don’t get the hate
Maybe I need to re-listen to this story to see what other POC are upset about bec I’m not. I find it funny and I’m keeping with the story just fine. Upon my second listen through, I’ll write another review if I catch the same issues.

what black people are you representing?
Love Nightvale. Listen to all of their podcasts. When word of an afro-futuristic scifi podcast gets around, there’s reason to be excited. These aren’t stories that include us. The first episode is a disappointment right off the bat. Really wasn’t expecting the worst blaccent with weirdly old, and incorrectly used, slang. Is this how you create a black character? Is this what we are to you? I recommend not pursuing inclusivity if the writers at your table are a bunch of white guys. Expand your range of employees, maybe then you can accurately portray a culture. With that aside, this is a story line that is all over the place, with no hopes of clarity. Enjoy, I guess? -I need you to know that those giving five stars are white people that have never met a black person in their life. Please hire black creators if you’re going to attempt depict black narratives. At least they’ll use AAVE correctly....

    Weirdness

    Talented cast, highly entertaining!
This needs to be adapted to the stage! The performances and writing are impressive, and the characters are amazing, from the main ones to the tangential ones. The songs and musical performances are simultaneously hilarious and beautiful. Some of the violence is a little too much, particularly in a later episode. Spoiler alert... .... .... Child deaths are triggering! It undermines the humor too much. That’s my only complaint. Love this show otherwise!

    Mostly Solid Show, Slightly Confused
Adventures in New America is an interesting concept and well-produced, but I feel like it doesn’t have one central direction to what it’s doing. I’m interested to see the team grow, develop, and refine the show as it continues!
  • JSmooveTheDJ
    Quirky
It’s a pretty interesting concept but I’m a big fan of it. I really like having a story with black actors as well so I may be sort biased but the sound design, writing, and acting are all great and I hope it sticks around

Fox News version of black people in America
This is the worst podcast on earth. The “black” accents and the fake perceptions of social justice issues are sickening. Whatever it takes for this to be removed from any and all Apple platforms needs to happen as soon as possible.

    Where is this going?
I’m not one to give up on books or podcasts but I’m 11 episodes in and I have no idea what’s going on... what started as an intriguing story about a man trying to get imprisoned to reap the benefits of healthcare has spun into some weird mess of spin off episodes and senseless musical numbers. I don’t think the writers know what they’re doing anymore. Jeffrey and Joseph, come help out the New America team. They need you.

    Excellent Storytelling
So much to love about this podcast: the non- linear storytelling, the framing as a radio show, the deep and well textured characters, etc. one of my new favorites.
  • bigwilly69
    Very Entertaining
Different from the typical Night Vale podcast, but still fun to listen to!

How difficult is it to say “There will be explicit descriptions of sexual abuse in this episode”
This is the second time that an episode turned very dark without warning. There isn’t even an explicit label on this episode. The NightVale presents network is awesome but I can’t listen because it fails to inform me when explicit material comes up. I am okay with explicit material in my podcasts. That is not the issue. But when the most recent episode of Adventures in New America discusses sexual child abuse I want to know. I sometimes listen to the podcast with other people and I want to know when something explicit is coming so I can give them a heads up.

    Strange but Great Listen
I read a lot of reviews that didn’t like this podcast but this time, I disagree…I LOVED IT!!! It was strange but true life in some instances....needing insurance so you want to go to jail because we treat prisoners better than citizens that are not jailed hit a spot...It made me think and laugh! Please keep it up!!!

    I don't know why I like this.
Usually when a podcast starts out with a "weird" premise, it ends up being either too dark and creepy for me, or trying so hard to be trippy that I get simultaneously bored and lost. This one is too light to fall into either of those traps, it has a followable plot, and I'm actually curious about the story and what they'll do with it. I took off one star because I'm uncertain about the racial aspect: it's there and it's not. It's almost as though the big bad in the story has so many people distracted that they're suddenly in a more or less post-racial society, except not all the characters have noticed that ... maybe?

    Good but...
I love this podcast’s story and it’s weird and creepy element. The only thing I don’t like about it is how manny adds it has.

I’m listened when sex time. Makes strong like horse

    Weird and Wonderful
Very interesting and twisted and fun and little too much on the nose. I get excited when this comes up on my queue every week.

    would not suggest
Worst thing I’ve listened to by far. I was extremely excited to hear about a sci fi afrofuturistic podcast but this was so poorly put together. It was hard to follow, the stereotypical “black” voice/slang sounds cheesy and the slang used in the wrong context.. it’s like a 45 year old white man made this..
  • falconeerfan1
    Crazy, Rochie and fun
Imagine, if you will, that futerrama was set in a dystopia, I think that is the best possible way to describe what you will hear

    Best podcast running
This show has quickly become my favorite podcast, and it’s the only one that I actually look forward to new episodes. Perfectly weird, flawlessly satirical, absolutely brilliant And that theme song gets me hyped up every single time.
  • Little pie pretty
    Weird as expected
Disturbing, strange, and all around confusing. It’s perfect! A little hard to follow at times but just listen again. No biggie

Really great story, it gets better every episode! Definitely inventive and fun

    Wow
This is god awful. I was excited about an AfroFuturistic podcast but this isn’t it.

    Trash
I like Welcome to Night Vale. This is offensive and lacks any entertainment value.

Best podcast ever, so far anyway
Funny as all get out. I wish they did a show every day. Great production and sound design.

    Mind Theater
When I was a kid I listened to sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes radio theater tapes. I think AINA is a theater of the mind kind of like those tapes I listened to as a kid. Great stuff. You need to have an open mind to enjoy radio theater and I see some of these negative reviewers have very closed minds.
  • Toro6654467
    Kind of insulting
A lot of the Nightvale podcasts I like, but the characters in this, the people and races they're trying to portray even in a satirical sense, just comes off insulting and offensive most of the time when you're one of the ones being caricaturized. Other shows and podcasts handle it a lot better, especially with the comedy. I also still don't understand what's going on, like at all, so there's that too.
  • glomdi
    Interesting
I like it so far. I have a hard time getting into scripted podcasts but this seems very natural.
  • Dudiwhfiekwhdhfh
    Mediocre at best
The night vale presents formula is becoming quite trite and boring, however unlike their other shows this one can be a bit grating to listen too.
  • Fiercefroggy
    ?
    Are new episodes coming?
  • first2fight
If night vale wasn’t liberal enough
... then you’ll love this white guilt I hate white devils podcast
  • mbrist
    Entirely awful.
I attempted the first episode and found it incoherent and poorly written. Middling production value doesn't make a crappy idea work well. It's truly unfortunate but this is a complete and utter disaster of a show.
  • Holly-Berries
    The music!!!
This is awesome! The music is reminiscent of Flying Human Circus, the voice acting is superb!
  • Giantmomo3
    Good content, few improvements...
Hosts do a great job covering topics. Only issues: audio is often to low, making it difficult to hear, horn intro is disarming when you listen to the podcast at bedtime. Enjoy the show.
  • j_a_x_
    Intriguing!
One episode in and I’m intrigued, it reminds me a little of Bubble and Deadly Manners- otherworldly and with great vocal work. I’ll stick around!
  • troan312
    OMG...YES!
If I didn’t love what Night Vale was doing before, this series solidified it for me. The topics of race, socioeconomic inequality, culture, justice, and vampires wrapped into one series....it is overwhelmingly wonderful! I’m waiting for the book and it’s just been two episodes 😍😍

    Huge Disappointment
Sadly, I can’t get back the last 31 minutes of my life.
