Rude Tales of Magic

1,115
Fiction #116Comedy Fiction #12

In this improvised narrative role playing podcast, come and join artists, writers, and comedians from Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Comedy Central, Marvel Comics, and more as they fight and fumble their way across the madcap, and exceedingly rude, fantasy wasteland of Cordelia. Branson Reese and his jester's retinue, Christopher Hastings, Carly Monardo, Tim Platt, Joe Lepore, and Ali Fisher star as a group of unlikely survivors (a talking crow, a lich in a wig, a bubbly fawn, a Sasquatch punk, and a tiefling hunk, specifically) who must solve the mystery of Polaris University's vanishment and return balance and higher education to their world. It's going to be very hard and very, very, rude.

    Fantastic and Hilarious!
Can’t recommend this show enough, the first campaign is really something special, very memorable characters. I am also loving the vibe of the latest Nevermurk campaign, maybe even more than the first.

    Long downhill slope
Started off amazing. Can barely listen to the latest ones (post-Ruleshaven, really). Awkward forced ship for why? Because gay must obviously = good character development?
  • greentonic
Just the worst. Truly the rudest possible fantasy podcast.
A spiritual home for people who truly identify as "problematic goblin". Shame on me, I guess, for not believing Swan Boy when he told us all how nasty he was going to get. I don't think he gets that gross/disgusting and mean-spirited are actually different things. Ali and Carly should slough the dead weight and start a sandwich show.

    My favorite podcast
The humor is offbeat and irreverent, but the players and Branson always seem to know when to pull back and be serious. The ending of the first campaign hit me harder than the ending of The Good Place, which is coincidentally one of the closest examples of absurd comedy-focused character-driven media I can think of to compare it to. You can tell the players are all comfortable with each other and it honestly sounds like one of the best play experiences you could hope for at a DnD table.

    God fears this Podcast.
This is the best podcast I’ve had the pleasure to listen to. Oh, and Branson? I will find you and force you to produce the full songs of the blips you’ve given us. And you too, Producer Taylor.

    Crème de la crème
Gorgeous production. They’re an actual group of friends and it shows. They’re also all so so talented. What a joy. None of this is really informative I know. I think people will be listening to this one in 200 years.

    The Best Improv Narrative!
I absolutely love the cast, characters and bonkers narrative of this show. The production, humor and improvisation of this crew are incredible. I’ve listened to most of this twice while waiting for the final episode of the Class Dismissed arc. Love what they keep coming up with; can’t stop picking up what they’re putting down!

    Yes, I love this show!
I found this show about 2 months ago, but for some reason, I waited until I got to episode 59 to write a review. This show is awesome, as we see the characters develop from trying to fight everyone, to trying to be a bit more smart in using their discussions with foes. Stif fry never really did grow out of it, but that’s just his character I guess, no matter how bad I want him to play a bit smarter. Anyways, it seems as though I am a bit caught up, but now I hope I am not to late, and that this show has been cancelled. I really love binging and immersing myself into the stories. I guess i might just need to find another show to binge next, but I thank you all for your entertainment, and I will look at your other shows next.

    Character development has plummeted
What started off as a cute and whimsical podcast with hilarious and zany antics has quickly become nothing more than a group of Chaotic Evil murder-hobos. I used to absolutely /love/ every this podcast but lately every new episode has focused on the the group murdering someone for cruel, spiteful and frankly evil reasons. It’s just not appealing to listen to the characters act like spoiled, narcissistic a-holes.

    The best of all time
Yeah I’ve listened to other dnd podcasts and enjoyed them a lot but after listening to rude tales I couldn’t go back to the other ones because they just didn’t hit at the same level as rude tales. There is nothing better than this podcast. This is it. You found it. It’s right here.

    Perfect!!
The only reason it’s four stars is because there’s a whole two parter that seems to just be to get rid of an NPC. Like if you want him dead so bad just make him die instead of dragging it out ya know? It only just makes me upset :(

    Very funny group!
Most of the players have appeared individually on another podcast I listen to called the Best Little Horror House in Philly, and they were each so funny on there that I finally came to listen to this too, and guess what, they're still funny here. Who could have guessed it?
  • OhPeaches
    Perfect!!
Wow! Easily my favorite actual play show, which is saying a lot since there’s so many good ones. This one gets the balance just right. Great production, funny cast, great story.

    Why Rude Tales?
Easily one of my top three TTRPG–RP podcasts. It’s equal parts surreal, heartfelt, thoughtful, weird, and disgusting (n.b., all positive characteristics.) It’s also a profound example of how the D&D rules can be used to serve storytelling first, despite the stereotype that they can’t. I am genuinely in awe of the creative achievements this show makes.

I don’t know anything about D&d And just happened to stumble across this podcast. it was definitely a new experience, definitely want to try the game. Characters and DM are hilarious! I ended up binging the show in two weeks to catch it. 🏝🔪👣🦴🦌🦉-🐻

    Incredible
This podcast gives life new meaning. If you thought you had lived before you listened to Branson Reese’s amazing storytelling, you were but a shallow husk that had not truly found meaning in this world. But don’t take my word on the matter, listen to it yourself!

    Finally a show for me
Branson was a guest on a show I like (best little horror house) and he was great, so i checked out his pod, and surprise surprise, that's great too. Heck yeah.

    So much to enjoy
I can’t believe how entertaining this cast is. So funny and creative. More than that, their group chemistry just brings it all to life. I find myself wanting to hang out with these friends and not just because Stir Fry is such a KILF.
  • Merfairy613
    So Funny!
I started listening a couple of weeks ago and I can’t stop! I binged it and am almost caught up. It is so funny and always makes me laugh! I can’t wait to listen to more!

    one of the funniest
One of the funniest d&d 5e podcasts out there. If you're into excellent improv and storytelling in a rules-light setting, this is for you!

    Fun party, miserable GM
A genuinely fun and goofy romp starring a cast of unlikely heroes with decent chemistry is always fun to hear. Their approaches to the bizarre and disgusting world they find themselves in are as entertaining enough, but even the good vibes from the players can’t overpower the funk of the GM’s narrative choices. I’m in no way passing a moral judgment on the GM for liking the overindulgent gore and visceral depressing nature of the story he wanted to write, I just don’t find it fun to keep coming back to how miserable he’s trying to make each party member at the cost of character development. The needless graphic cruelty gets old pretty fast, and almost every non hostile NPC the main cast speaks to has a decent chance of dying horribly. Which in itself isn’t necessarily bad, but the constant need to up the ante on the grossness and unfairness of it got old pretty fast. At least they’re sponsored by liquor services so you can take a shot every time the GM describes something as “the most horrible thing you’ve ever seen”

Love the show, can’t stand Albee
I think the show is hilarious but Albee’s character drives me crazy. I feel like she steals the spotlight at every opportunity in order to pursue maybe the least interesting character arc. Also there’s tons of great NPCs whose mistreatment by the PCs actually makes me angry. The DM literally lets them get away with murder. 5 stars because it’s still a great show.

    Please Treat Yourself to This
A well-produced actual play show with an outstanding cast. When I’m not absolutely howling at the character interactions, I’m gripped by a story that’s as compelling as it is ridiculous.

Not your Grand-pappy’s dungeons and dragons!
Rude tales of magic is probably the single greatest concentration of comedy it is possible to create via ttrpg podcast. It is the first podcast I ever listened to, and looking back I think that was a very solid call. The laughs alone would be well worth the price of admission, but it’s also woven into a story with brilliant writing, lavish and fantastic backgrounds and worldbuilding, and madcap characters that never fail to delight and surprise. All of the Player characters are fun and creative while holding surprising depth and arcs of character growth that make them feel viscerally human and organic; even the literal skeleton man. If you like madcap humor, a profound contempt for “rules” of games, incredibly polished improv performances, and listening to people process their issues with the Catholic Church via satirical worldbuilding, check out Rude Tales of Magic.

    One of the best!
Absolutely top tier. I’ve listened to many DnD pods and this was almost immediately top 5 for me. The cast is incredible. They play their parts so well and they’re all genuinely funny and make an amazing experience. I was even a patron for a bit. I get the feeling the cast are all coastal lefty types, which comes out in their characters and riffing occasionally (like Bellow making laws. I wanted to scream lol), so I doubt they’d like me but I like them and they make me laugh so I’ll get over it.

    MBMBAM brought me here
This group bought a domain that was mentioned on another podcast I listen to. Anyways I gave them a try and I really like it! They're really funny and aren't as bogged down in the gameplay mechanics as some shows. As someone who listens to DND podcasts but doesn't actually play I find this really refreshing and fun to listen to. It was funny from the first scene and hasn't disappointed so far! It's a fun listen!!

    The best TRPG podcast period
This is the funniest ish of my whole life but it’s also a super engaging and enchanting story and the music is fantastic. I want everyone to listen to this podcast tbh. I laugh myself to tears at least once per episode and I also sometimes shed regular tears. This is the good stuff.
