Your Mama’s Kitchen

1,865

“Tell me about your mama's kitchen.” That’s the simple request which begins each episode of this Audible Original podcast from acclaimed journalist Michele Norris (NPR’s All Things Considered, The Washington Post) and Higher Ground, Barack and Michelle Obama's media company.

Every week, hear guests like Michelle Obama, Glennon Doyle and Abby Wambach, Matthew Broderick, D-Nice, José Andrés, and more explore the complexities of family life and how their earliest culinary experiences helped shape their personal and professional lives—and of course, each guest brings a recipe for a favorite dish from their youth so you can taste a bit of their story.

With a delicious buffet of actors, authors, chefs, musicians, and more, the rich conversations that flow from that simple, initial prompt reveal the histories, memories, and cultures that emerge from the kitchen—the heart of the home—where we are nourished physically and spiritually. Some of our most valuable and vulnerable moments happened there as we watched parents struggle with bills, wrestle with shifting family dynamics, or figure out new roles for themselves as feminism changed the national terrain. Your Mama’s Kitchen is a podcast about cuisine and culture, ingredients and identities, and the meals and memories that make us who we are.

    Fantastic show!
I am so sad to have listened to the last episode. Michelle, you are a master at asking questions that take it deeper. Had me tearing up several times. Love it! Looking forward to the next season.

    One of the Besr Podcasts
I hope this will be around for a while because it is one of my favorites and because it is such an original way to discuss food and culture together.

    Dorie
Absolutely loved the conversation with Dorie. Was in tears. 😭 Suggest an interview with Pam Anderson…..”How to Cook Without a Book”. Pam was a editor at Cooks Illustrated. Her cooking concept…..cook with a formula not a recipe changed my life. Thanks 🙏

Gettin Grown Pod Sent Me Here!!! 💚💚💚
I felt so at home with her on the “gettin grown” pod and i immediately looked for what I could find with her in it!!!! I LOVE this pod and its host, she’s made me realize that I need a cast iron skillet lol!! Odd enough, I read her memoir way back when and had no clue it was her til I did my googles!!! I grabbed her new book when it dropped from a YouTube video they did about it; it moved me to chorus! The dots are connecting and I love that for me. Her voice is like a fireplace… I want to be near it. It’s so warm and comforting 💚✨💐!!!

    New Listener
I am new to the podcast. The title seduced me because I believe, as Ms. Norris obviously does, that the kitchen is the most important room in the home. I began with the episode featuring former First Lady, Michelle Obama. I respected and admired Mrs. Obama for many reasons, during her official role as First Lady, but I have a new found connection with her as she shared the intimate details of relationships, family and child rearing from her childhood kitchen. I can identify with her experiences and memories. These special occasions are not dependent upon race, status or location. Amen, Sister. Kim San Antonio, Texas

    The Host is Perfection
She draws out a familiarity with people by having an easygoing, but steady tone. She asks good questions. Hearty questions. Not tough, but getting to the sometimes tender spots, which are not always nostalgic, event when sentimental. This is a great show about food and community and friendship and all of the complicated and beautiful things that entails. Great concept, great execution, and great work to whoever is working the sound and mics.

What a great breath of fresh air!
I am a true crime junkie usually, but I stumbled across this when preparing for a long roadtrip. What a find! This show is like a warm bowl of soup. Michelle’s voice is so soothing. She coaxes such great stories out of her guests and I feel like I am home with them. Such a great concept and a various menagerie of guests that are so great! You will not be sorry to try this one!

    It just gets better.
What style & grace - I miss the Obama family. Her writing transports you and this podcast gives depth & dimension. At times, she cracks me up I laugh out loud. Thank heavens I’m a remote worker so I’m not being disruptive!

    Fabulous listen
I have admired Norris for her years on NPR and then her book and Race Project. Talking to guests about their childhood or current kitchens is an ingenious way of bringing out terrific memories, family stories, and food ideas galore. I love this podcast

Loved every episode so far, especially George Takei
George Takei is the best episode yet. Heart-rending and heart warming. Each episode brings history to life through the exploration of food and the memories it evokes.

You described my childhood kitchen and dining room! Swinging door and all. Except the appliances were white. Kitchen walls were of course yellow.

    Love It!
I can relate to all memories…I think of my summers with my great grandmother cooking. I laugh all the way to work driving in L.A traffic… I enjoyed the Conan memory!

    Love most of the episodes
I really enjoy this comforting and sometimes thought-provoking podcast. I loved the Michelle Obama episode that started off the season (I’m hoping there will be multiple seasons) and have loved most of the episodes since. Have to be honest, though; the Conan O’Brien episode is my least favorite so far. I stopped listening after he described “the modern kitchen” - which supposedly has to have a TV and a seating area (with couch) so people can watch the game together… Please. I looked around my beloved kitchen and thought about other kitchens where I’ve eaten and laughed and lived with family and friends. I guess I wouldn’t have been so irked if he hadn’t said something like, “Everybody has to have…” Just seemed so clueless and out of sync with what this podcast usually celebrates. (While clearly showing that he moves in different circles than me!) Maybe I’ll listen to the first episode again and delight in all the Robinson family kitchen had to offer.

    Comfort Show
I love this as a palette cleanser (no pun intended) for the more anxiety-inducing podcasts we all typically gobble up (no pun intended). Michele brings thoughtfulness to the conversation while she looks to invoke the spirit of kitchens from guests’ childhoods. The undercurrent of socioeconomic disparities in black kitchens takes the simple concept of food to highlight both survival and the life you can only get from family. Sometimes it is hard for me as a white person to hear small jabs like “oh this white person just didn’t get this.” Of course the complexity and hardship of black experience is not something I can empathize with, but there are generalizations made about some ubiquitous concepts and specific lovely experiences that I really DO understand. Hearing that I am excluded from those experiences in this conversation does make me feel alienated in a sphere where I otherwise find commonality and a real sense of connection. I would never want the podcast to flatten the experience of African American childhood for the sake of my privileged white feelings; I just like having a common thread to connect to people I really enjoy listening to.

    Wonderful, insightful new podcast.
I have listened to two episodes and this is now on my favorites list. Michele has such an easy rapport with her guests and their vulnerability and willingness to share is very special. A lot of food for thought here, so to speak. Can’t wait to hear more.

    Your Mama’s Kitchen
These podcasts have brought back so many memories!! This will date me but my siblings and I helping to ‘knead’ the butter with the orange dot in the middle on Saturdays is one of the first things that came to mind when thinking of Mama’s kitchen growing up. Thanks Michele for ‘stirring’ those memories!

    Can’t wait for this!
I heard a teaser on the 1A podcast, and I immediately called my mom to ask about my grandma’s cookbook! We both learned from my grandma in her kitchen, and I’m passing that on to my kids.

    Memories My Mamas kitchen
Listening today on WHYY I was transported back into my grandma’s kitchen. How wonderful the memories. Lessons learned! One thing that stands out is watching my grandma make biscuits. Hot buttermilk biscuits I loved the crispy corners, nothing like it

    Can’t Wait!!!
Already so excited for this food pod with Michele Norris, can’t wait to hear what kind of guests they bring on. Love the concept!
  • Jackpot Poker is my new Fave
    This is the problem podcast
with all the right, Marxist guests and child abusing Ellen DeGeneres, all of her podcast look different with the same crooked child mutilating guests. Look up Rumble and see how they are imorally sacrificial. I’m not sure if they have Michelle yet or not or if it’s Michael or I can’t decide I can’t decide if Obama is American or if he’s black or if he’s Kenyan or what the media has done to me. all I know now as I watch uncensored stuff and it is mine blowing what they are feeding you. They are force-feeding you this, do you like to open your mouth and have someone else put food in?? I sincerely hope this helps. 💜💜God bless you and these reviews that you see your five star are so cliché that go like this…. Yeah this is a great book. I can’t wait to show it to my friends. It is so good I love Michelle she is so great….. I never want to talk about the Howell and the white and the YR talk about real issues like Afghanistan and elections being compromised ect. Let’s make some more distraction cookies!! Yay!! It’s amazing to see people say she is so amazing and smart when is it is so plan to see if you can’t see that you’re probably brings yourself and we need to stop being that way!

    Michelle Obama & Oprah
I agree in theory your idea when they go low we go high. Please explain how you manage that in our current wave of one low experience after another every single day of every week by the right wing extremist. Our country and everything I have spent my life working to create freedoms for women and gays & peoples of color, different religions, all of it being torn apart. I am 77 years old and my life’s work is being torn up like a discarded newspaper. I don’t know how to get back to high now.

I so enjoyed Michelle Obama Podcast. I felt, I was a guest at the table, and they were speaking directly to me. This was very comforting to me, and reminded me, that, it’s ok not always to be ok.

My comments on the Light we Carry
Absolutely the best podcast ever. Mrs. Obama is superb; she’s genuinely honest warm and so down to earth. I appreciate all that she has and continues to do for our world. She’s an Angel!

    It’s all about HER
Over and over. I like mrs Obama, I’ve read about her struggles and hardship over and over. i wish she uses her status to make a difference, to promote causes for black people for ex. It’d be POWERFUL. Please!
  • GottaHaveMyBooks
    These are not “Conversations.”
I wanted to love this, but after listening to the episode with David Letterman, I learned that the podcast - billed as a “conversation” - was 98% Mrs. Obama talking. She unfortunately wouldn’t let David get a word in edgewise! So disappointing, and I won’t be listening to any more episodes.

    Simply the Best
I have been a Michelle watcher ever since she became First Lady. She never disappoints. I find that she exudes character. I have read her book twice. If you need a pick me up, sound advice or just a fresh perspective read her book or listen to the podcast. You will be enriched.

    Focus on experts
I adore Michelle Obama but I wish this podcast focused more on interviewing academic experts instead of celebrities with opinions.
