Myths and Legends

Jason Weiser and Carissa Weiser tell stories from myths, legends, and folklore that have shaped cultures throughout history. Some, like the stories of Aladdin, King Arthur, and Hercules are stories you think you know, but with surprising origins. Others are stories you might not have heard, but really should. All the stories are sourced from world folklore, but retold for modern ears. These are stories of wizards, knights, Vikings, dragons, princesses, and kings from the time when the world beyond the map was a dangerous and wonderful place.

    Honest Review
Hey Jason! I honestly think that this is a great podcast. I like how you try to make sense of every story, and that you put a creature of the week in every episode. Don’t really love the emojis in the latest episodes though; it just doesn’t seem authentic when you put that many emojis. I also like how all the ads are at the end of the episode, and that the (not very common) ads that are in the middle of the show are read by you, and are very quick and heartfelt. I love learning about new mythological creatures, and then turning around and creeping out my friends and family with (mostly weird) weird and gruesome facts about said creatures. I also like how, when it comes to sexist stories from the Middle Ages where people sold their daughters to husbands, you are wonderfully neutral, and you try to express that people were, frankly, horrible to women in general, which is stupid. God created men and women to be equals. I like learning about new myths, and it is great. Keep up the good work!! I know this is about 400 episodes too late, but in episode 67A, you asked why ill-bred was a really bad insult. Well, in medieval times, if someone called you ill-bred, they mean that you are 1: Born of dirty peasants and/or vagabonds. 2: Your parents are not married, and/or one is noble and the other is a peasant. 3: You don’t have any sort of honor(remember people were very big on honor in this time period). 4: You’re just a horrible person. Or 5: A combination of all three.

    Absolutely LOVE it!
This podcast is great to listen to anytime. I like that you guys put jokes into it, while still staying mostly true to the original content, I also really appreciate that it’s not explicit. 😋

I’ve been listening to this podcast for about four years now it is my go to. It is hands-down, the best one! I even re-listen to the ones that I’ve heard before.
  • Forever Ago Fan!!!
    This is an amazing podcast!
I love all the French ones and Pretty Pretty Pirate! I also like Clever Girl (episode 156). Thanks for all the work that you all have put into it. Amazing jokes and storytelling! I tell these stories to my friends, and they love it! Also, I did the math. 11 trumpeter swans could carry 275 pounds of more.

    An excellent modern interpretation
The man tells a good story. I can see how some could be annoyed at times by his commentary while retelling these ancient stories but it’s not as if he changes them and I believe by doing so he’s breathing fresh life into them. It’s personally rekindled my interest in some of these older stories which I have gone and reread or read for the first time myself. He’s also keeping these stories alive by doing this and that alone is admirable. This podcast is gold. Stay gold, pony boy

    Fixed part 2 of 2
I wrote a mean comment because part 2 of a series was subscriber only, and within minutes is was changed so everyone could listen. The team for this podcast is awesome. It is always a treat when a new episode comes out and I’m very happy I get to enjoy this episode as well as the other I have enjoyed in the past. Thank you all <3

    Amazing Podcast
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to "Mulan: A Likely Hero" episode. The storytelling was engaging, and the episode was well researched. The host's narrative style brought Mulan's tale to life, making it a captivating!! Always loved Mulan but the storytelling shed a whole new light and love on her ❤️❤️

I listen to this pretty much ever day lol, Wednesdays being my ‘me-time’ for my date with the new episode lol. Your growth is awe inspiring and I never tire of your telling, especially my favorites: 1001 Nights as well as the Greek collection, Journey to the West & The tale of Jaya/Vijaya. You and your wife are amazing. Your work has been a companion to me for almost a decade now and I’m so grateful you do what you do - THANK YOU 💛

    Honestly, my absolute favorite!
Myths and Legends is my favorite podcast! It’s the one that ALL OTHER PODCASTS are measured against, so other podcasts should take note! Also, if you guys ever want to bring back Fictional (pretty please, I know it’s gotta be a lot of work!), I’d totally be on board! Thank you for sharing such great content and being consistently awesome!

Early ones great, then the ads arrive…
Just discovered this channel and really enjoyed it as I started from the earliest, then an ad or two appeared. Then another. And another. And even though I found the host often talks too fast and the bits of sarcastic asides and references to modern tech a bit irritating, the gist was interesting and entertaining. But soon the additional ads peppered throughout got to be way too obnoxious, often louder than the podcast itself, sometimes esp grating when a loud woman’s voice as opposed to the male host. Unsubbed and stopped listening. Never thought I’d find something even more money-grubbing than youtube…

    7 Years of Enjoyment
Over the past 7 years I’ve had 4 jobs, all manual labor. Trash truck hopper, Sheetrock hanger, General Handyman, and now I have a landscaping business. Throughout that time I’ve listened to this podcast while at work, also Fictional and Scoundrels, but it his one the most at least 8 times start to finish. I don’t think I would have been able to deal with the monotony without the lightly informative yet humorous style of Jason’s storytelling. I am truly appreciative for this podcast. Being able to absorb these significant to jovial tales from times of yore not only connect us to our past but show us how time may change but people really don’t. Thank you for all that you do.
  • hdtyehs
    Love it but...
The pride commercials make me want to throw up. The degrading of the man in a lot of his stories is annoying. Otherwise pretty good

UPDATE: HEY JASON, NOT SURE WHY BUT YOU NO LONGER SHOW UP WHEN I SAVE YOU ON APPLE PODCASTS. I HAVE TO TYPE IN “MYTHS AND..” TO FIND YOUR SHOW. KEEP IN MIND YOU ARE THE ONLY PODCAST I LISTEN TO AND WAIT FOR EACH WEEKS RELEASE. YOU MIGHT WANNA REACH OUT TO APPLE. This series is my all time favorite podcast to listen to. I never miss an episode. If you’re looking for something educational and entertaining at the same time this is it. Jason does a great job tying the story into where is rests historically as well as the social and political period in which each story comes- but trust me it’s not in a boring way. He has this unique ability to use modern references in a way that is his just cheesy enough to be funny, and not make you roll your eyes. I know more about Greek, Roman, Icelandic, Asian and American myths than anyone I know because of this podcast. If you like a good storytelling give it a try.
  • Greekygeekyguy

    Best podcast on the platform
This podcast is the BEST. It balances humor, modern writing, and the classics you tell. The dialogue is great, unlike another review says. It isn’t faked or forced, and matches the theme or feeling the story gives off at all times. Simply fantastic job. I hope you make it forever!

The only podcast I gladly pay for.
This is my go to every night. I let Jason and Carissa tell me a story before bed ☺️. I’m a subscriber and never think twice about supporting their work. Cannot recommend ENOUGH!

    I wish I could tap 10 stars!
When I found myths and legends, I had never heard anything like it! The way Jason and Carissa use this platform to retell famous (and not so known) stories from various cultures is not only INCREDIBLY entertaining, but also insightful and well-researched. I’ve been a listener for years and can’t stop recommending it enough to friends who enjoy a good storytelling!

    Desperately seeking dialogue tags
“See, not everyone is evil, Xuanzang clapped, and Monkey had to agree.” Unless Xuanzang communicated this idea by slapping one hand against the other, this is absolutely terrible writing. This is now how dialogue tags work, but the writers of this podcast do this all the time. They appear not to understand which verbs are associated with speaking. Characters also do not laugh, grin, or sigh their lines. If the writers would just take a refresher course on dialogue, this would be a decent show.
