What Roman Mars Can Learn About Con Law

3,772

Professor Elizabeth Joh teaches Intro to Constitutional Law and most of the time this is a pretty straight forward job. But when Trump came into office, everything changed. During the four years of the Trump presidency, Professor Joh would check Twitter five minutes before each class to find out what the 45th President had said and how it jibes with 200 years of the judicial branch interpreting and ruling on the Constitution. Acclaimed podcaster Roman Mars (99% Invisible) was so anxious about all the norms and laws being tested in the Trump era that he asked his neighbor, Elizabeth, to explain what was going on in the world from a Constitutional law perspective. Even after Trump left office, there is still so much for Roman to learn. What Roman Mars Can Learn About Con Law is a weekly, fun, casual Con Law 101 class that uses the tumultuous activities of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches to teach us all about the US Constitution. All music for the show comes from Doomtree, an independent hip-hop collective and record label based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

    Deep Fake
I believe the bipartisan border bill was during Biden’s Presidency. That’s why Trump didn’t want it passed.

    One of my favorites
I love this approach to making constitutional law approachable to folks who are not lawyers. I love showing the historical approach and the precedents that exist prior to certain issues really allows me to understand the context of where we are at now. Literally one of my favorite shows. I always look forward to an episode release.

    Great
Been listening since shortly after its start. Highly recommend if you are interested in legal topics but in normal discussion with non-law students. It is left leaning - kind of obvious. As a lawyer who loved law school (and studying for the bar), it is great. I restarted the other day, and it’s unintentionally foretelling.

So educational, wish it came out more often!
Professor Joh is a great teacher, and Roman asks great questions! I wish the episodes were more regular. Every time crazy news comes out, all the other political coverage makes my blood boil. This show actually makes me learn something, and helps me feel less terrified about the future of the USA… Except the recent ep about presidential immunity, there they convinced me that I’m justifiably terrified 😅

    Wisdom meets Law
Joh is an amazing teacher to craft so concise and understandable of an answer in such a short podcast. So interesting to have explained -the origins of the law, how it came to be and how it applies going forward. How a seemingly obscure application to a current situation is effected by the intent or the residual of a law even when YOU think a judicial ruling is missing the point. This podcast explains the rules in the game of justice. So valuable for understanding and accepting and seeing how things that were written long ago are applied to the current day situations. Our lives under the Rule of Law of the Land. I wish she would continue doing these as it's a valuable podcast we all should listen to and learn from.

    Love This So Much
Thank you for this series - I was actually pre-law as a student and left the field when I realized I liked the history of the law more than the law itself- now I have this show and have loved it since day 1 - even if this nation finally forces the orange moron out of politics by voting to keep him out and making him as non relevant as he should be - keep the show - it’s amazing - thanks again

    A Little Dry
But that’s OK cuz the subject matter is the dry-as-bones parchment doc. called our Constitution. She’s absolutely brilliant and knows how to speak with precision. Roman just adds a little comic relief.

    I’m so into this podcast
Roman, Jo, for a podcast that has no fanfare you are simply amazing. I rely on you to make sense of what is happening with Trump and our country—and I’m a lawyer and a con law buff! Please keep it coming, especially now! Thanks for this podcast!

    An outstanding discussion
So many podcasts try to bring drama to the interview. These discussions are intelligent factual and concise. They draw you in provide you with all the necessary information so you feel confident knowing you can make an informed decision on the subject. Thank you for being authentic.

    Supreme Court
Please please please do more and more often! Such great knowledge about the law and it’s complexities. So educational. So interesting. I only wish that we had all listened to a podcast like this years ago so that we could have all understood how important the Supreme Court. Thanks Roman. Please do more.

    A Sad State of Affairs
Great summation for these interesting times. I’ve been following this podcast from the beginning. Today I was struck by the thought that if the Constitution survives this time, the country that remains will have a great deal of gratitude for someone like Trump who came along and proved the genius behind such a compact. To be sure it is a very unpleasant time but can, after all is said and done, turn out to be quite beneficial. It’s getting through it that’s uncertain…and very stressful.

    Making it Stick
There’s an idea in educational psychology, called interleaving, which is simply about learning an idea, leaving it for a while, and coming back to learn and relearn. So here I am again starting at the early episodes as if I’m studying for an exam. Love the show and willing to do it all over again!

    Great show!
Very informative and interesting. Please record a new podcast soon! The laws are certainly being tested in this country and I need some in depth explanations!

    Great Stuff
Please please please hoping you’ll comment on Clarence Thomas, Justice Roberts’ letter to Congress, and the growing ‘stench’ as Justice Sotomayor put it. And for what it’s worth I love the weird bouncy intro music.

Love the podcast! Theme song is annoying
That’s all. Please keep doing more! 😍 So concisely informative, insightful, and clear. But for the love of Pete, change that annoying theme song. Or at least shorten it to like 5 seconds. Thank you!!
  • So incredibly beautiful shows
    Please keep going
I LOVE THIS PODCAST SO MUCH AND I WANT MORE THANK U FOR 73 EPISODE I SALUTE YOU ROMAN

    Love it, and relevant!
Absolutely fantastic! Informative, entertaining (Roman Mars style), and without a doubt relevant to our times. I’m riveted every time I listen. My only (very mild )complaint is the somewhat infrequent releases of episodes… but that makes it so much sweeter when a new one drops!

    Arghh, Vocal Fry!
What the professor says is very interesting and informative, but almost every one of her sentences trails off into absolutely nerve-grating vocal fry. 5-star content with 1-star delivery. I had to turn it off.

    Weighty and Worthy
Mr Mars and Professor Joh are like two friends keeping me up to date on how Constitutional Law affects us all. The prof is interesting and explains everything without sounding pedantic. Roman sound delighted when he learns something new. A great team.

    Speak up!
The content is good and the professor is excellent but Roman Mars whispers and swallows his words. Dude, if you’re going to host a podcast speak up so your listeners can actually hear you.

I am in full support of all things Roman Mars. This Podcaster has wonderful intellect and a great way of speaking and expanding the mind.

    Thank you!!
Thank you for making this podcast! I just recently starting listening and started from the beginning. This podcast helped me understand not only the constitution but all the events that happened from the beginning of Trump's term to today's issues. Thank you so much!

    Favorite Podcast
So you know where I’m coming from, other podcasts are Freakonomics, business, wars, cautionary tales and other tech podcasts. I find this podcast, very clever, and always incredibly insightful about things. I had no idea about. Definitely worth a listen.

    Propaganda
Beware! This podacst is full of propaganda. I love 99pi but Roman you need to broaden your horizons and get a grip on reality. It’s these sorts of shows that breed the useful idiots that are ruining our great country.
  • Angry15422
    Excellent idea…but…
This is a great idea for an educational podcast, but it would be much better without the clear political biases of Ms. Joh. We don’t need to hear “the 6 conservatives” with negative connotation 30 times an episode while giving favor to opinions of the democrat justices.
  • Franko10wow
Whatever AOC opinion would be is correct in this
This is not a valid debate on the issues weighed by the court. Just one side argued with a few simplified straw men thrown in as counter points. Just think of what the most leftist politician’s viewpoint would on a given issue & that’s what the conclusion will be in this podcast. Very disappointing….

    Treatment of the Supreme Court
Issues that rise up to the SCOTUS are rarely simple. There's always issues of multiple competing matters of constitutional interest. A good constitutional scholar can look at either side of a controversial issue and be able to make cogent arguments supporting or rejecting a particular premise. Unfortunately these two seem to laugh off matters of abortion, Gun control, religion, free speech, etc., as though there is only one correct answer, and that the six conservative justices are wrong and are just political hacks. When you shift from considering both sides, you are just producing another politically biased podcast. It becomes an echo chamber, and you loose the very audience that would benefit from being informed of differing opinions. Add in Roman's audible sighs when mentioning Clarence Thomas or the excited octave shift in his voice when mentioning Sonia Sotomeyer and it's clear who his favorites are. Try harder, please.

    Essential
I remember listening to 99% Invisible back in it’s first year. Back then I loved the deep background on everyday surroundings and how they came to be. Roman’s amazing and made stories on Kowloon and monks sworn to a vow of silence but somehow selling beer globally via a land line answering machine. They can’t talk!!! But this isn’t that podcast. It’s a beautiful evolution of Roman’s style. And like the former, it opens up our eyes to stories, ideas, and actions that are shaping our lives but now it’s in real time. Just outside of the news we read and hear about the Supreme Court shaping the architecture of our government and rights, is the motivation behind their actions. This podcast lays out the interests, beliefs, and “isms” behind Supreme Court rulings. You walk away with new perspectives on the decisions being reached. This podcast separates out rulings and law from the intent, truth, and goals that are now driving a new wave of politicized “law making” from the bench. And if you listen closely, you can pick up on how they’re making it up as they go. I find myself not caught up in the disturbing rulings, but in total amusement with the fact that they are a brilliant bunch of entitled English scholars; hobby-level historians whose limitations in areas like anchoring a branch of government is remedial at best. They carved their careers through political alliances and handjobbing their way to a seat. Their laughably flawed rulings are effective at one thing, desperately struggling to convey how important the judge is. They won’t let facts sway their thinking and they are thinking opinion pieces on constitutional rulings will do just fine. We may not know the future but we know future rulings will be the ideas they brought to the case in front of them. This level of insight into their folly Is what Roman is sharing. While I’m clearly opinionated on the current court, the positivity I enjoy is a deeper appreciation of how it was worse at one point in our history and this show outlines examples of ways the court has been operating to strengthen our country vs steering it. What am I talking about???? It gets 5 stars because DOOMTREE.

    Let’s Hear Both Sides
It can be infuriating listening to this podcast, however I am interested in how the left side thinks and I almost always learn something. I know the premise of the podcast is poking at Trump (which sometimes is entirely fair). My question is, will you ever poke at the other side? The Biden family is not the beacon of ethics and morality.

I used to live this show
When it first started this show was my favorite. As it has progressed it has turned into leftist propaganda and instead of evaluating interesting legal suppositions we are spoon fed over simplistic explanations and given watered down and poor representations of other opinions on the matter. Frankly it’s insulting
  • BonnieKarpay
    Thank you!!
When the pod first started, we needed it to understand the “legality” of the actions undertaken during the reign of the Orange One. And now, in the after times, I am still very grateful as Elizabeth
  • Roman Slobs Knobs
    Not actual con law
Latest episode on Dobbs complains about how hard it’ll be to kill babies. Only con law they talk about is how precious precedent is… which they love over turning as long as it’s not protecting the most vulnerable amongst us… unborn babies.
  • wjc65
    Very biased
Really, it would be so much better if the law was explained rather than opine in it.

    Excellent
An excellent podcast, one of the best!

    Makes learning interesting
Roman Mars is fantastic (obvi), but Elizabeth Joh is such a great explainer and somehow makes tough topics interesting. I’ve learned so much from this podcast. Thank you!
  • JimHarbz
    Has become overly biased
The show has always been relatively biased, but recently Roman isn’t even trying to hide it. It makes it hard to enjoy the usual informational nature that makes the show good. Hopefully, Roman can return to at least a some-what balanced portrayal of various perspectives.

Love the show, not the name change.
Why put yourself at the center?

    Simply Amazing
I love this show. Informative and relevant in any time period. I found out too late in my degree how much I love criminal law and law in general but this gives me a fix, while keeping my “law-gic” sharp! I would love more talks like this show has.
  • Snow Biscuit
    Informative. Hate the music, though!
The content is both informative and interesting - often a tough combination to pull off. But the music near the beginning is AWFUL!!! Would be tolerable without the man shouting OH over and over. I listen to podcasts while doing other things, so I can’t stop the playback before the music starts, and I’m always forced to listen to the end of the music clip if I want to hear the discussion begin again. The song at the end is annoying, too, but not as horrible as the OH OH OH crap.

    Wait with bated breath.
Love this podcast, very informative. Mars leans left, Elizabeth Jo is right down the center.
