Best to the Nest with Margery & Elizabeth

545

When Elizabeth Ries and Margery Punnett hosted a myTalk 107.1 radio show together, they joked that their most personal conversations happened during the commercial breaks. During one of these pauses, Margery shared an important family principle: bringing your best self to your home. Being an urban farmer with a flock of chickens, Elizabeth quipped, "Bring your best to the nest!" The outside world shouldn't get the smiling happy version of you while your family gets the crabby and exhausted one. On "Best To The Nest," Margery & Elizabeth explore the simple concept of creating strong, comforting, beautiful nests that prepare us to fly.

    Besties in Nest
I can’t believe how much this podcast has meant to me over the past 400 episodes! The conversations Marjorie and Elizabeth share are thought-provoking, heartwarming, and hilarious. This podcast has been part of my weekly rhythm and the topics shared between these two best friends are topics my besties and I then discuss when it comes to our nests and the partners and “chicks” within it. So grateful for the time, thought, and fun energy put forth into this podcast I will keep listening to the 1,000 episode and beyond. Cheers! Thank you M&E! Sincerely, Terren from Mpls.

    LOVE!
I am a new listener. Cried the whole way through Gracie’s story. We just made the exact same decisions with our bloodhound.

    Authentic
Even though this podcast isn’t specifically geared for me (my kids are grown and out of the nest), I love the chemistry between Margery & Elizabeth. The topics they discuss are always interesting and they both bring a different perspective to whatever is being discussed They laugh and boy do they cry-lol. But that’s a good thing because they are not afraid to bring authenticity to the podcast. Well done and professionally produced, Best to the Nest makes for a great weekly companion as you walk, drive or do chores around your nest! Matt

    Best to the nest
I found out about this podcast watching Twin Cities live I love listening to these two women. I feel a real connection with their stories. They share from the Duluth area originally from the Minneapolis area and it feels like home. Karen from Carlton. I so enjoy the late night episode. Thank you, Thank you for sharing with us all. Deus te amat
This is old curmudgeonly Tom in California, the widower you took into the Nest a few years ago after I heard Ian’s plug for your podcast and told you how much listening to the two of you helped rekindle my late wife’s place in my home. I so sympathize with Marjorie and Elizabeth too. I cried again listening to Marjorie’s return broadcast. As Ian signed off of his broadcasts I just want to say: “Deus te amat, and I do too!”

    Love and loss
My heart breaks for Margery as she grieves Ian’s passing. Listening to the third encore episode it’s easy to see that he was absolutely delightful, as is Margery. I’m reminded of an earlier episode where Margery said she liked to keep the phone line open while she an Ian were apart to hear him typing as she drifted off to sleep. That, my friends is love. Sending peace and love to you and your sons as you go through this most difficult time.

    Ads
Love the content and interaction between both of you. I understand the need for sponsors and ads. Hearing you talk about the products within the podcast doesn’t sit well though. (Por Moi) Please keep the ads as ads. 😊 it would make the show’s content more believable.
  • ABJ144
Enjoy the podcast a lot- but sound levels are making it potentially dangerous to listen to.
I really enjoy the content of this podcast- and I’ve been listening to Margery and Elizabeth since the MyTalk days- however, recently, the sound balance between the show and the ads has changed. I listen while driving and to hear their voices well, the volume has to be turned up quite loud- ads now just drop in without warning- and are so much louder, that it has made me jump (3 times now)- and is concerning to me as I’m usually driving down the freeway- please adjust!!

My “priority viewing” on the air!
As a vintage MyTalk Margery & Elizabeth fan, this review is long overdue as I am overjoyed to have them in 2.0 podcast version!! M&E touch on every facet of being a mother, daughter, wife, friend (and human!) and truly make us feel like we are doing it all together— all just doing the best we can. I absolutely love you ladies, thank you for your willingness to be vulnerable and have important (yet fun-infused!) conversations that springboard further conversations with our husbands, friends, etc. 5 BIG stars— never leave us!!! #nesterforlife

    Home invasion
I’m so sorry this happened to you and so mad nothing’s being done to fix it. I had a garage break in and 2 cars and a bike stolen years ago and I know that feeling of insecurity all too well. For the past few years I don’t go outside after dark and check crime sites before walking during the day. It’s exhausting. I saw Governor Walz on Meet the Press today and find myself resentful that he’s not working on the crime problem. Also Fry wants to raise property taxes by 6.2 percent when we’re not being protected now! I too live in a close neighborhood and was the block safety person for years, but I feel helpless when it comes to my own personal safety.

    Great show!
Love the intelligent conversations on this podcast, the humor and the content. I look forward to each episode.

    Decluttering
Dear Ladies, I enjoyed your last two episodes on decluttering and only bringing into your home items that are really needed. Now, I have never been a pack rat and I rather enjoy purging. After listening to Margery talk about getting rid of 50% of what they own, I was inspired and thought I am going to do that too! My husband and I are retired and moved to the Minneapolis area about 8 years ago to be near our kids and grandkids. We got rid of a lot of stuff before we loaded up and came here. But, I thought I might as well see what I can get rid of now. I am on my 2nd week of purging and we have taken four loads of things to a thrift store to donate with more to go! I am not done yet! When my father in law passed away, it took us three weeks and the weekends to clean out his house. Mind you, this was after working all day at our jobs. I came as close to be nervous breakdown than I have ever been. It was exhausting! I promised then and there not to leave a clean out job like that for our kids. So, thank you ladies for inspiring me! I didn’t realize we had as much to dispose of as we did! Just call me the “Purging Queen”! Wanda

    Never enough episodes!
I love this podcast!! The topics and conversations are so relatable and I am always waiting for the next episode to drop. I just finished listening to the episode about boundaries and could have listened for another two hours, I found myself nodding and commenting along with Marjorie and Elizabeth. Thank you ladies for being part of my nest🩵

    I found a treasure
Hello Margory and Elizabeth….I used to absolutely love your radio show on 107.1. I always felt that you both had unbelievable chemistry and have been mourning the end of that show for years….so I’m just thrilled that your doing a podcast together. The show is fantastic!!! Your podcast on finances is so real and helpful. Thank you for your profound raw honesty❤️

    Best to the Nest
While enjoyable for an escape or a “what if I do anything listen “ …be warned this podcast is for the affluent dominate society women . First world problems are solved by hiring help , purchasing products and services . The older of the two hosts is esp tone def and often cannot relate to discussions because her kids loved to clean - ate gourmet foods - got good grades - didn’t play video games - it goes on and on… at one pt both the hosts agree that having sisters of the same affluence and class was “ SO nice and such a relief when dealing with aging parents and holidays “ it is not for the average working - budgeting - juggling mom and would be a miserable listen for a single mom for sure .

    Love this podcast :)
I haven’t written many reviews in my life on anything. But I felt compelled to leave one for this podcast. I am 43 and feel like I’m in the middle of a casual, but important conversation with friends when I hear these ladies converse. One of the the very few podcasts I connect with and thoroughly enjoy their topics of discussion as it lets me wind down and also gives me things to think about. My only negative comment would be that the episodes are not long enough and not often enough! Great job ladies!

    The Jeff Dahmer movie
I recently watched the Netflix movie about Jeffrey Dahmer. The focus of the movie was not on how he lured and killed his victims. It was about the insidious injustice endured by the black and brown homosexual community. It was about white privilege in our nation. It was about underserved communities where peoples voices were not heard. It was about women of color being marginalized and ignored. It was about how he got away with it, and the impact it had on his victims families. It’s a must see. I love your podcast! Sincerely Mary Zale

    Thank you
I love listening to this podcast. I don’t know how I found it although I live in Minnesota, I had never listened to the radio station that you two were on. I love the content. It’s so relatable. I have now invested in liver, new toilet brushes (if you listen- you know), and myself. As a mother I find it reassuring to hear Margery and Elizabeth’s perspectives since I am both a mother of young children and adults. I must shout out Margery for going back to school, I am 42 and have long debated and wondered if I should and I did it and hearing your going I though it’s always a good time. I also appreciate Elizabeth always bring up health. I am clearly I work in progress as I sit here drinking Diet Coke but I aspire to be as in tune to my health and body as you discuss being. Thank you both.

    Delightful/Impactful
Ladies, I have listened to each episode and have been so thankful for your time and mission. I have but one request: please, please, please tread carefully with any conflation of “attention issues” and ADHD. Two of my children have ADHD (the correct identifier, all are ADHD with differing types) and we’ve had such struggles with bias. I firmly believe this is fueled by those without a medical or familial background, offering critical opinions. I was a full-time parent (all three of mine have left the nest for college and beyond) and made my children’s health my number one priority right down to serving fruits and vegetables out of our huge organic garden, only buying pasture-raised-and-harvested meats, etc. etc. I can’t tell you how hard it was to deal with bias in the schools and extended community when ADHD was mentioned. Thankfully my children rose above it, learned how to advocate for themselves, and are thriving in college despite all the side jabs that followed through the years. ADHD is a mental health condition with real neurological implications that target executive functioning in very real ways. Please do not lump it in with general “attention issues” that can manifest from everything from poor nutrition to sleep disorders and on, down the line. Thank you so much for your help in reducing casual, micro-hurts with real ramifications in this area. I know it is never your intention. I love you both! Best regards.

When I was working you their radio station was my go to while commuting. Love that they have paired up. Their age difference gives them such great perspectives. I smile and laugh while on my walks now!!

    This really hit home!
First of all, I love the podcast and look forward to listening every week! This week’s episode (“Time is Ticking”) really hit home for me as we’re taking our oldest to college in just three weeks, and my emotions are all over the place— happy, sad, excited, terrified!! You and Ian did such a great job of putting things into perspective for this college mom newbie, and I am so grateful. As a high school English teacher, I also appreciated the message about college writing & reading. The best writers are avid readers, & a liberal arts education prepares you for the person you want to be. I went to Notre Dame, and Fr. Hesburgh, former president of the university, said (and I’m paraphrasing) that you go to college not to become something, but rather to become someone. Thank you for driving home that message, and thank you for the wonderful podcast. Oh— and I, too, had to purchase the Riverside Shakespeare AND the Riverside Chaucer in college. Such is the life of an English major!!

June Watch, Read, Listen - thanks Ian!
Thanks to Ian for recommending Mary Me on Amazon prime. I don’t watch a lot of content but the combination of Ian talking about the movie and Amazon advertising - I decided to watch. Thanks Ian!!! But content I never miss is Best to the Nest. Love the conversations, the non problem solving, the discussions that make me think and look inward. Margery and Elizabeth you make a difference - keep creating great content. I’ll be here for every episode.

    Connection point
I am a former Twin Cities resident who now lives on a farm in Western North Dakota. My sister moved from North Dakota and now is a Twin Cities dweller. We are each busy raising four children ranging in age from 1 to 10 years old so it can be difficult for us to find time for ourselves and to just have time to talk to each other. However, we find time every week to listen to Best to the Nest and we inevitably find ourselves discussing the topics brought up on the podcast. The recent episode about how much independence and responsibility we should give our children and at what age was especially fun for us as we compared the difference between farm kids and city kids in this area. Thank you for a fun and positive podcast that gives these two sisters a connection point!

    Thank You
By far my favorite podcast that I look forward for every week. I appreciate the variety of topics, cleaver ideas that enlighten my day and the all-around happiness this podcast brings to my life. It feels like I am sitting down with a couple of girl friends!! I especially liked your recent show called You are Loved (episode 300). I have listened to it multiple times and have been working on being present in my life. I never associated myself as an anxious person until recent years when I started digging deeper into myself. I am one of those people who notoriously stuffs all of my emotions until I eventually explode, which is never pretty and always filled with regret when the dust settles. So over the last 6 months I have been learning how to be more present in life and not let my thoughts, frustrations and worries control me. I have been dabbling with mediation during this time and am learning the benefits of turning inward to acknowledge my feelings. After listening to You are Loved, it reiterates to me that there is truth to meditation, slowing down and allowing ourselves to be mindful and present. I look forward to building a meditation practice in my life to build up my toolbox for life. A BIG heartfelt thank you to both of you for all that you bring to this podcast and our community. Also a special thank you to your guest, Kelly, I can’t wait to dive into her podcast Mindful in Minutes. I already have it tagged as a favorite to follow! Margery and Elizabeth, thank you for being a bright light in my life!! ~ Jodi

    Burn!
Generally a fan, but really take issue with the rage filled reaction to a criticism of the Covid show. Wow! You talk about not being a cancel culture show but let someone take issue with anything and the white hot rage emerges ( you essentially called the writer incapable of nuanced thinking). For a great example of how to respond to listener criticism, listen to latest episode I’d Everything is Fine where hosts handle some negative feedback with grace and humor. Rare sour note in an otherwise uplifting show.

    It's Real
I so appreciate how Margery and Elizabeth say it like it is. No protecting their ego, and that is what I love about the podcast.
  • sandamom
    Covid my way
Margery your experience with Covid was lucky for you. However, your laughing, and joking about doing “Covid my way” is completely insensitive to the families and friends of the over one million Americans who have died of Covid or Covid complications. I doubt you would have been giggling it up if you ended up hospitalized. The vaccine guarantees nothing. Plenty of people who have had the vaccine have died or experience complications too. You got lucky, and you should be grateful.

    Thank you for the conversation!
I've never written a review before, but I'm compelled to comment on your recent discussion on the burnout related to elder care. I've listened to this episode four times now. I'm so grateful for your delving into this little-talked-about issue. I learned so much from this discussion and felt such comfort in hearing how others are dealing with this situation, as we are in my family. I look forward to Best to the Nest each week, and hope both Margery and Elizabeth know how entertaining and helpful their heartfelt discussions are to their listeners.

    Love your podcast!
This is my first time ever reviewing a podcast but I wanted to review yours because I love it! I love your topics, your guests, and just your blend of information and humor! Listening to the episode today when Marjorie is on the cruise and she starts talking about the minimalist holiday gifting had me laughing so hard by MYSELF in my house! Listening just started my day in a good way on this cold Minnesota day and I needed that! Anyway, I love your podcast and I always look forward to it. I know it’s something I can listen to when I’m walking my dog, cooking, folding clothes, etc. It’s great 😀

    Love!
I deeply connect with the premise of the show and love the weekly conversation and reminders that I’m not alone in my struggle to bring my best to the nest! I’ve shared the podcast with many friends but it was the bananas in the stocking story that really prompted rating and writing this review! You are appreciated!!!

    Chatting with friends
Absolutely LOVE this podcast. Every episode I am either crying, laughing, vigorously nodding my head or yelling “Yes!”, or all of the above. It is so validating to hear these women discuss their lives, including the struggles and the triumphs. It has also helped my personal development this year!

    ❤️❤️❤️
Listening to this podcast has become one of my favorite parts of each week! I love all the topics discussed and can deeply relate to the thoughts and feelings expressed. On the surface level I love hearing the recommendations for things to read, watch and different products to try. But going deeper, what I really love is that I just feel better emotionally after listening. Either from feeling validation that I’m not the only one who struggles to balance all aspects of life and that’s ok but also to feeling inspired that while perfection isn’t the goal improvement is and I often find myself asking what little changes I can make to improve things. I feel like I’m chatting with an old friend when I listen to Margery and Elizabeth, I cannot recommend this podcast enough!!

    Thank you for being human!!
In a world of social media mayhem, it’s refreshing as a mom, wife and overall happy woman, to find comfort in a podcast that talks about real life moments-the good, the crazy, the tough!! Thank you for being real, for being vulnerable and for making me feel like a human! Keep on bringing the best to the best! Happy heart💜

    My favorite weekly podcast!
I love this podcast and find myself anxiously awaiting Tuesdays to hear the latest episodes! Your episodes are filled with variety, insight, and energy. The episode on digital addiction pushed me to finally write a review. As a mom of four (13, 11, 9, 6), I am sad and scared for my kids, their brain development, their mental health, and their ability to find joy in things beyond screens. The most common words spoken at my home are, “can I use your phone?”, “can you put in the password?”, “I just need a little more time!” The battles over screen time, appropriate content, and device hopping are exhausting and endless. Thank you for discussing this important issue and reinvigorating my desire to keep fighting this battle!
  • MelHall2
    Thank you!
I’ve never written a review before but I’m so inspired to write one today! Thank you, thank you, thank you for speaking your truths, sharing your thoughts and encouraging others with each and every episode! I admit I will miss The Nest episodes but my heart appreciates that you are following yours. Cheers to a beautiful fall and a future filled with all our best! xoxo

    A path to perspective!
Elizabeth and Margery, thank you for helping me solve all of the problems that I never realized I had! All joking aside, this is a treasure of a podcast. Your unique perspectives, empowering topics and challenge of looking at life from a different perspective is something that I take far beyond each podcast close. A fan of MyTalk and dedicated Twin Cities Live viewer, I giggle out loud every time I hear you two laugh. No need to be Twin Cities-based to appreciate this priceless duo!

    Be educated before you speak
Loved this podcast but I’m another listener who was shocked by the uneducated mask rant Elizabeth gave. If you’re going to make a point of giving you opinion on such a hot topic at the VERY least make sure you sound educated on it. Not once did she mention the medical concern parents have who want this for their children or why she believes it’s not a medical issue. Pro mask parents don’t see it as a political issue so you’re wrong there. It’s a MEDICAL concern.
  • Adamandmindy
    Best Podcast Ever!
I love this podcast! It is the best conversation and I can relate to so much but even when I don’t I still enjoy it. Keep up the amazing conversations Margery and Elizabeth!
  • 651chache
    That mask conversation OOF
Listen every week and was pretty shocked at Elizabeth’s mask rant. Would like to hear from an epidemiologist guest to talk about kids and COVID, rather than a host who “reads a lot of research.” Yikes

    Love it!
I really appreciate how relevant your topics are, from mental health to work/life balance. Love the actionable steps and resources from each show. Loved you both since the radio show! Keep up the great work!
