Improv #23

Five longtime friends and Chicago improvisers combine the best parts of two disparate worlds: sitcoms and Dungeons & Dragons.

Follow a halfling bard, a half-orc warrior, a druid bar owner, and an elven princess as they struggle to keep the lights on at their tavern and inn, Bottoms Up. Unlike most D&D podcasts, each episode is self-contained, so drop in wherever just like your favorite sitcoms!

Starring Erin Keif, Waleed Mansour, Elizabeth Andrews, Sean Coyle, and Ben Briggs.

    Phenomenal Dysfunction
Sitcom D&D is an improv comedy podcast that uses D&D inspired rules/world building with a sitcom format. Or something like that. Idk all the fancy terms. What I do know is that it is hilarious from start to finish. And just like a great sitcom, it is one of my top comfort listens I come back to again and again. So come belly up to Bottom’s Up bar, grab a piss beer or two, and bask in the gang rollin’ DIIIIIIICE!

Bottoms Up. I am taking a two month break.
Long time regular. But third time complainer. I have been coming here since the Water Sports Water Park, and met my wife at the Chuckiy at Chuckiebusters Purgestravaganza. But with current change in management, I’ll be taking a 8 week break and come back to binge drink thirstally a seasons worth. If you’ve never been to bottoms up, Dive on in. the beer is warm and stale; just like mom used to make. update: Many moons later and I have returned, and boy howdy I had some of the best laughs of my life. If y’all keep your doors open I will continue being a Patron. Thank You Staff at Bottoms Up for always making me feel welcome, and excited to swing by weekly to enjoy the rock bottom service that is so bad, that my horrific life seems grand.

    I’ll be waiting
While you’re gearing up for your next project (🤞), I’m listening to the entire series again from the beginning.

    Start on Season 3
Just like any sitcom the first two seasons are rocky. They are figuring things out, fleshing out their characters, etc. I recommend starting with Season 3! You can pick it up easily there and there is a huge difference in quality.

    An absolute joy
Edit: please don’t end! Even if it’s a different story, you all are such a joy. We miss you Ben, but very much love the whole crew and can’t imagine time without y’all! First, this is the best podcast theme song ever. New listener, but completely obsessed. So freaking funny! The amount of LOLs is outrageous.

    Interesting
Laugh track makes it unwatchable for the masses but good for some niche listeners

Huh? ( joke comment, please use)
My adventuring party called the Mighty Five came in to get a drink. The entire staff were nailing the furniture upside down to the ceiling. I questioned what they were doing and an orc (very stupid, should get a unraise in money) nailed my but to the to a chair on the CEILING. 0/5 stars From First Mate Lucien Leviathin Tavelle, Warlock of Captain Twister, the dizzyingly fast spinner. I’m still here look up. Actually a great podcast this is for a clip show comment box episode, there hilarious. I suggest watching great show.
  • When The Tumbleweeds Came Home
    Illegal Activity
Inside of bottoms up there was a man with a lisp playin a senior like a xylophone, with a peg man and mega rats dance battling to the music/my favorite song piss out of ten, if you could call it music, the was also a tiefling strapped to the ceiling. I went into the bathroom the toilets were the color of ale and would not flush. And as a ferret I fell into the toilet and after 3 minutes of swimming, I was absolutely wasted. As I got out of the bathroom I was passing by the mayors and promptly saw a rat fighting the mayor and as I passed they flirted at me. As I got toward the door I saw all the mega rats, except the one tangoing with the peg leg/arm man, stopped and strong boys came in holding cakes yelling put your piss in the air, everyone held there cups up and promptly puked on a strong boi shoe. Then the tumbleweeds invaded (Vomit stain on paper) /10 -extremely wasted and flammable ferret. P.S. I never say the rat again.

My adventuring party and I were in town overnight en route to a beholder’s lair when we stopped for a drink in this hole forsaken by the gods. Against my better judgement I drank some of what they had The bar owner, making extremely aggressive eye contact as I drank it off—I can only imagine this was to intimidate me into finishing the whole tankard—told me it was an exclusive craft ale. It was not. It was only after I had drained an entire tankard of the most pungent, sour liquid I have ever had the misfortune of imbibing (and as an adventurer I’ve taken acid to the mouth in combat,) that a little halfling popped his head out of the keg and loudly exclaimed, “Seb! How many times do I have to tell you that you can’t hide my sandwich in the piss barrel?! You know it gets soggy!” He then proceeded to climb out completely nude, go up to the stage, and play an entire thirty minute trumpet solo with his thoroughly unwashed anus. No matter what any of our party members did to save ourselves, it wouldn’t stop. I begged my goddess for death but she would not answer. But I must give credit where credit is due. The next day, we all laughed at the beholder and killed it faster than we’ve ever killed another monster of comparable power. I almost felt sorry for it in the end, because it really seemed quite a pathetic creature when just the night before we saw (and tasted) the very bowels of the Abyss and somehow survived. Four stars. Not five, as one of my companions took massive psychic damage from the halfling’s performance and has not been able to face a moment of sobriety since. —Aidene Siannodel, Oath of Devotion paladin. One of the waiters clearly had a new haircut, which I failed to point out while they were taking my order. They proceeded to very loudly go “HMPH!” As they crossed their arms and stomped away. I asked the manager what was going on and he told me that the waiter had told him to tell me that I was being given the silent treatment and that I should about what I had done?? I can back with flowers later that night and they still won’t talk to me. 0/10 stars baby I’m so sorry let me back in the bar

If you love fun improv and playing with comfort stories
This show is for you. Fans of tabletop rpg storytelling will love the ingenuity of fitting gameplay into sitcom tropes. But really it’s the great improvisers and their friendships that make this a comfort listen. Love it and the patreon listens. Shout out to the kitchen raaaaats!

DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST
unless you want to cry your eyeballs out from both sadness and laughter. This podcast took over my life as I binged every season, and now that I finally caught up I’m left with a gaping, empty hole inside of me as season four has wrapped and I have to wait until season five before I get more of the Bottoms Up gang. I don’t know what to do with myself now that I can’t listen to this 24/7. Please, don’t follow in my footsteps and feel the pain of loving this show. 😭
  • TepidDuckPond
    Perfect ear worm
This show is perfect for relaxed listening. You can really drop in on any episode. I haven’t listened to the first season, and you aren’t faulted for not knowing the show’s lore. S2 E11 with Anthony Burch is my favorite episode, but seriously… why hasn’t Beth May guest starred yet? Seriously, give this podcast a listen. Everyone is really funny.

When is my food going to get here?
“ So I’ve been to this bar a couple of times, and have been pretty impressed with the so called “pot of orange”. I heard that they had started up a to-go service, and was super excited to order from it. However, after waiting for about 2 months for my food, I decided to go back to the bar to check and see what was happening. I talked to the bouncer, who needs to focus on his job more, and flirt with the server less, and he told me that the to go service has been disbanded. I told him he still owed me my food, and that I was going to sue, using a child lawyer. He told me that he would have it delivered right away. I have now been waiting about a year and a half, with no update. 3.5/5 stars, pot of orange was worth it”
  • Groovy Prine
    Offensive
“Went in to try Bottoms Up on a Thursday for dinner before work. My server never came to check on me because she was playing a game with her coworkers. All four of them, and a rat, were biting other customers on the shoulder! They said it was called Don’t Bite The Customer Too Hard and whoever draws blood from biting someone loses. As a vampire I this is exactly what I’m looking for in a bar!!! I played a couple of rounds with them and have never been so stuffed, but I did lose the game. 4 stars though, because the bathrooms could be cleaner.”

    Laugh out loud funny! 😆
Absolutely love this! Wish it was an actual sitcoms with scenes of both the players and the characters! Thanks for helping my 10 hr work day go by with entertainment 🤣

    Best. Podcast. Ever.
I’ve listened to every episode at least 3 times and it NEVER gets old. I have grown to love each of the comedians on here and am in such awe of their talent!!

I can’t believe how much I love this podcast
I found this gem through Too Scary Didn’t Watch and have been binging it since then. It’s freaking hilarious and so fun. It’s such a fun format and I’ve always been curious about D&D but too nervous to try it out, so I feel like I’m finally learning about the game. I’m hooked!

You’ll never know how good this is, until you give yourself over!
Season 2, Episode 20 had me in tears at the end. So many laughs, only to be hit with such a poignant end to the memory, followed by another great laugh. Couldn’t love this whole show more. Players/cast is amazing, and does what every sitcom should; takes you out of your world, and gives you time to breathe even when life gets rough. Thank you guys for the laughs, and now this huge cry. Don’t mind me.. it’s allergy season. Just… allergies.

    No chairs?
Went in to relax after work, but the employees had all the chairs stacked against the wall and were daring customers to climb them. How am I supposed to drink and chat after work if I can't sit down? 1.5/5 stars
  • CalicoGrim
The bartender has no sense of customer service
I went into bottoms up for one of their thirsty Thursdays. When I went up to order,I couldn’t even sit down before the bartender was already accosting me. HE ASKED AGGRESSIVELY IF I HAD ANY STDS BEFORE I USED HIS NASTY SEAT. I’ve never been more offended in my life and as I was leaving he still had the audacity to ask for a large tip. Zero stars.

    Awesome!
This is an awesome podcast. It reminds me so much of a mixture of Cheers and Friends. I love how these four characters make the show come to life (I mean five sorry Jennifer). I’m excited to hear what happens next at Bottoms Up. Shout out to the Kitchen Rats!

    Hilarious, binge-able, addictive.
Bottoms up comment card: I just wanted somewhere chill to read my book and drink some ale. It was literally 2pm on a Tuesday, the place was completely empty. The door guy asked me for my ID but didn't seem to know how to read it, or maybe didn't care? He flicked it at my face before waving me inside. It took forever to get a drink too. Once it did come though I have to say it was the best drink I've ever had. Too many places shy away from the piss taste but not Bottoms Up. Props for that, but it all went downhill from there. TLDR, I left an hour later soaking wet with my book ripped to shreds and feathers stuck to my hair. Maybe next time keep the fashion shows to NON business hours. 2/10 stars. Genuine review: I've been doing overnights a lot lately and like to listen to dnd podcasts while I do. I can't listen to super serious ones on overnights because I can't always focus on those when I'm tired. But this show lives in my head rent free 24/7! I'm constantly laughing out loud (like actually... like doubled over cackling, I wish I were exaggerating but I'm not) and I can't help but sing the theme song every time I hear it! Seriously, the chemistry between everybody irl and their characters is amazing. I never struggle to pay attention (I have adhd and I'm unmedicated so this is a feat). Seriously, if you want a funny dnd podcast that stands out from the rest, this is the ONE.
  • Sirgazlowe
    Mary sues with dice.
Barely any dnd rules go into the game. They really should have picked a much simpler system for what is essentially one shots week after week. Go watch any sitcom in tv and you’ll have a better experience.

    Comfort Food Comedy
The podcast version of that one sitcom you love and would watch on repeat as a kid plus the energy of a raging fever dream (which I assume is what wetbus shows are like?). I cannot recommend it enough. Just mad they haven’t done a classic sitcom beach episode… yet. 😎

This show was made for me
I love bad sitcoms, I love improv, and I love D&D. Legit perfect show and I now have my own Cult Box to bust out the next time my mom tells me about a new Facebook group she just joined Bottoms Up Review: I had finally tracked down the werewolf that murdered my entire family over 10 years ago to this tavern but before I could avenge them, these imbeciles dragged me into this nonsensical game where they kept yelling numbers in my face. Not only did the werewolf escape but he bit me on the way out. Zero Stars PS- thanks to my newly enhanced sense of smell, I’ve had to leave my home due to it being down wind of this horrible tavern Zero Stars again
  • Licyavacado
    I love it here
I like that this podcast checks the improv, d&D, & bad-on-purpose boxes without getting dramatic or heavy. It stays frivolous , lighthearted, and nonsensical. Thanks for carrying me through some really hard and lonely times by sharing the fun friendly fun times you all make together.
  • Marcus Fulford81
    pretty good
Bottoms up review: As Joe Smoe the third I can politically (and yes I meant politically) say this place was as good as my left toe jam. It was so amazing the bouncer punched me in the face and told me to sit down. Then everybody started punching me and spitting on me. So I will be coming back again 5/5 stars

This show makes me so happy :)
The chemistry with this group is unmatched. When they laugh at each other it feels so genuine. I listened to the first few episodes a couple of times to get all the characters/voices down in my head but then I was sold and ready to listen for a hundred hours. Joined the patreon because I hated being all caught up on the episodes! Haha. Love this crazy crew! But also I think we should be friends, are you taking applications to join the group? (Friend group, NOT improv group)

Bottom’s Up is my sort of place
This podcast hits when I’m restless and my brain can’t take anymore politics, news, true crime or anything deep. It’s engaging and lighthearted and very well done!! I’ve never played D&D but now I really want to 😉

    LOVE U THANKS TO ERIN!
NEW PEOPLE::::why should you listen? Each week the gang has another issue that’s wrapped up in 1 ep. Like in sitcoms when we were kids like Friends or cheers. A lot of ep. have lessons learned or things that bring the friends stronger by the end. Please listen to 3 episodes before you decide to leave. You won’t though, so thank me now & go enjoy! Go go go!! 😍🥳🤩😁 TO THE CAST Thank you so much erin for telling us about this awesome show you’ve been working on. I’ll a huge hey riddle riddle Fan and was SOOOOO EXCITED to hear you were making this show & couldn’t wait to hear it! The premise is fantastic! I’ve always loved Erin’s mini series on hey riddle riddle-(especially riddle city Noir) I’ve listen to that 4 times. Is that weird?? 🤔🤷‍♀️😆 Obviously knowing her story telling skills I figured this show was going to be Aces! Y’all did NOT disappoint! Shawn:::: is awesome at coming up with these fantastic creative voices, plus I enjoy how he’s so calm. I love his creative ideas…it’s no wonder him & erin make a great couple. Lastly he has great comedic timing. TBH I thought I wasn’t going to like Shawn because of the microwave situation we heard about on HRR and that JPC made fun of his huge love of milk & working out. BUTTT I thought…if Erin likes him he must be pretty dope. Now I’m a BIG FAN!! Love you Shawn♥️🥳🥳 Now go clean the microwave 😁😁😇🤣😂💕💕💕 Erin::::is amazing at setting scenes and painting pictures of the scene she’s in or describing to the lisenter the physicality of the character in the scene for example::”we’re stacking our heads along the door ALA kid TV shows….in this order..” it helped me as the listener be there & see it. Thank you Erin 😉😉 Love you gurlllll! Also if you read this can you please reply? Even if it’s hi, thank you & a heart emoji? That would make me SOOOO HAPPY my BIRTHDAY IS MARCH 14th 🥳🥳🎉🎂🥳🎊 Elizabeth::::you’re just nutz girly lol you come up with wild stuff, even if one line doesn’t land you’ll come up with a banger moments later. You take lots of risks & put me on a ride. Keep surfin chick! SEB:::I LOVEEEE your neurotic character. I think he makes me laugh most often if I really think about it. You clown on yourself a lot and can be disapariging & sacractic. I can relate I guess? LoL I just think you’ve created a really solid character & I love you CHIP::: dudeeeee you rock my socks! You melt my heart ❤️ throughout the episodes you often have these sweet, sad or funny quietly said moments. Typically they’re often over looked or talked over, but I hear them, I just wanted you to know that. You are for sure the heart of the show for me. You’re so soft & gentle, while big & strong. Who wouldn’t want that. This lady would 😁🤘😉🥰🥳 (married so Jk) Btw…Congrats on the real life babies gentlemen! I’m listening all the way through your seasons for the 3rd time. I think reruns are comforting.

    A fun dissociation
I started listening because I love the comedy/fantasy/improv combo and love whatever Erin does. I was newer to the DND style but they don’t go too hard on it and it adds a fun “anything can happen” aspect to it. Genuinely makes me laugh out loud and all the characters are lovable. I caught up quick and immediately bought the Patreon so I could have more of this group! I listen in the gym too dissociate and make time go faster although I get a few weird stares when I start randomly giggling during squats. Bottoms up review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 My ale tasted like piss and I’m pretty sure there was a dead guy at the next table. My waitress forgot my drink order 3x to go flirt with the doorman. He was cute I guess. The bar owner made it up to me with a free drink (also piss). The bard was talented though, put on a great show until he found a sandwich next to the stage? 3 stars.
  • Suz Winspear
    It just fits my brain
Is quickly becoming my one of my to go-to comfort podcasts (first was Hello from the magic tavern then Hey Riddle Riddle) I will follow you anywhere Erin! (FYI I found the laugh track jarring at first, but now it fits well — if you’re on your first ep having a similar reaction)
  • ArtHistoryChick718
Funny. Perfect blend of friends, improv, and sitcom stereotypes
These friends are great. I love the podcast. Perfect for laughs and a comfort to listen to episodes over and over again. Bottoms Up review: 5 stars Small and humble bar and inn. My coworkers and I work down the block and come here often. When my parents are in town they enjoy staying here too. Great place to meet up with friends (get the Mtn Dewd!) and people watch. Yes the linens are a bit stinky, the food is mediocre, and they’re hours of operation are random but… Honestly my coworker is making me write this review because she has a crush on the owner, Seb.
  • Guifenheim
    Not exactly improv.
A decent show that is entertaining and supposedly improv but Keif shuts down the improv by narrating that everyone does something in reaction to what a player is doing. Especially if something semi sexual is introduced. I’d enjoy it more if the other actors had a reaction that was in keeping with their character instead of Keifs real reactions dictating the direction of the “improv” .
  • Pvmnz
    Brilliant!
Found the show recently and I am loving it! Love the tie-ins to some of the more nostalgic sitcoms of old. Brilliant work!

    Sheer delight!
What more is there to say? This show is just a good time. Great job, everyone!
