Friends with PodsGreat Pods But . . .Great magazine and great pods. Murray I love your insights but for goodness sakes stick to the topic, you’ve been all over the place. And you’re taking up all the oxygen in the room. Let the other guys talk, too! Love you! Mean it! 😁

HdjsjebjaAnswers to all your questionsAs someone deeply fascinated with military history I find this podcast to be a godsend. I can parse through the writings of antiquity all day and still not have a clear depiction of ancient military history and these guys do an incredible job of not only summarizing a lot of dense historical work but of clearing the air on what ancients authors were biased and where the truth really falls. I love hearing condensed answers to so many specific questions by Murray and when they do the longer form shows it’s great to hear what the historical consensus is vs. where there are differing opinions. Great job and I’ll definitely be subscribing to the patrion!

WeatheredPoolBugSeeds of DiscontentLatest episode had a clown interject his “Modern” political views into an “Ancient” Podcast- your podcast just became a ClownShow-Love You Murray-can’t listen to your clown friend. Wish you well.

shipwreckbluesLove it but are there zero female war historians out there?I’ve been listening to this pod for a couple of years and overall I do love it. I love both the longer and bite-sized episodes and I always learn something new... But it just occurred to me that in all this time of listening I don’t believe I’ve ever heard a female war historian come on? I’m sure like most, this discipline was created by and continues to be maintained by mostly white male scholars (hope I’m wayy off), but since I’m a female who loves learning about military history, I’m sure there have to be at least SOME female war historians working in the field today? Why not shake up things a bit and invite one of them on here for an episode even once in a while? Very curious what they’d bring to the discussion or even if the topics they gravitate towards studying differ at all from their male counterparts. Please don’t kill me for bringing this up, not trying to start anything - just genuinely curious. Even if this review falls on deaf ears, I would still recommend this pod to anyone who wants to learn more about ancient warfare, so do give it a listen 🙃

AnthonyVPGHMeandering conversations, minimal content, boringThe topics are interesting, but how it is approached does not work. They waste too much time with back-and-forth banter that leads to a meandering conversation. The actual substance of the content suffers as a result. To make it worse, the banter is not interesting or funny. They also find a way to continually interject modern political views while continually claiming that they do not want to make it about modern politics.
-
KenHyunHard passIn the first few minutes of an episode about the Roman legion, they can’t pronounce “velites” properly. (Hint: 3 syllables, not 2) How can I trust anything else if something that basic is messed up?
-
Mr. Buster! The right kind of interesting! This focuses on more than just Spartans or Macedonians. Whereas the Forgotten Wars Podcast gives you a whole season about a war, this gives you bite sized chunks. Enjoy!
-
FluffypooferI love themThey talk about almost every aspect of ancient battle I’ve always been wondering about. Plenty of long and short episodes to choose from. Awesome!

Frank5AngelsDisappointedI get AW magazine and I look forward to the new shows every week, but this last one about Sparta was terrible. I appreciate different viewpoints, but the modern day political agenda was over the top and not necessary. I unfortunately will be taking a break from the podcast. Cole’s last book Legion vs the Phalanx was great, but this new book sounds like a dud based on his own description.
-
wolfie/wolfWho caresWho cares if modern warriors are inspired by Spartan mythology or facts? As long as they are inspired to defend our nation against the evils of modern history.
-
sandranianStick to HistoryThe politics was annoying. The history is fun. Stick to what you’re good at.

cannae216Great showI am in the middle of binging all of the episodes. I didn’t wanna miss any of them because this content is so cool.

DJW_SAMNeed more contextGoing into this Show I had no idea who the Thebans were. The show just jumped into details. Without the big picture I was lost, turned it off.

MadmeninviennaLove this podcastI have been listening to it for years! The conversations are one of a kind. These gentlemen know ancient history as if it was yesterday. Their new feature AWA is brilliant... it’s like the whiskey shot to their normal growler of dark stout roman beer!
-
Rowing PhilipReally great show! They really put in the effort, and produce a very high quality history podcast. Each episode benefits from the panel of experts - without there being too many cooks. Interesting topics and a healthy amount of audience interaction. Give it a listen!

tybee4Short formatLove the shorter format!

The real HornburgLove historyJust good history, without all the b.s. of trying to turn stuff into a novel of some kind.

I Am The Awesome Prussia!Fantastic PodcastThis podcast is so informative and has a lot of wonderful discussion, each of the hosts brings their own unique insight and particular area of knowledge and expertise to the table resulting in a podcast which is entertaining, engaging, and very informative. I only began listening fairly recently and am still working my way through the back catalog of episodes but thus far there hasn’t been a single episode which I haven’t enjoyed. Overall a great listen and very enjoyable.
-
ChristianwinklerGreat ContentThey need to invest in better quality recording material.

JbbmillerEnjoying so far but should be called Ancient WESTERN WarfareI’m giving this 4 stars since it’s right up my alley and I’m enjoying what I’ve listened to so far. But in truth while the information and guests are of high quality, it is certainly almost entirely western focused and even quite Mediterranean centered. For instance, the latest episode on ancient mounted warfare (I did now hear mention of this in the older podcast, episode 31 I believe) mention nothing about the use of ridden horses and mounted warfare in the steppes as early as 4000 BC, choosing to begin with the adoption in the world sphere of the Classics around 900 BC. Or when discussing the chariots there’s no mention of the Shang dynasty’s use of them at the same early times. Large Covered ones that acted as mobile missile forts for multiple soldiers. Nor mention of the cataphracts, which dominated many battlefields and destroyed the Romans in their largest war with the Sassanids (and eventually gave rise to the primary battle unit of the Byzantines). Also the discussion of Elephants is far too dismissive, and doesn’t even mention the one place where 90+% of all elephant warfare took place... India! (Oh and to knit pick, the Carthaginians used the now extinct North African elephant, not the forest, and they were one of Hannibal’s most decisive units at Trebia, even if they died shortly afterwards... and he brought them because they WERE so effective in Pyrrhus’ campaign). But I do like it and I’m going to keep listening, just with this one grain of salt.

Nick37282839Great podcastVery informative, to the point but the sound quality is sometimes overlooked.
-
VragnokSuper informative, super poor audio productionThese guys are fantastic in their knowledge, but the quality of the recording itself is really terrible. It’s essentially a4-way Skype that gets recorded and goes completely unedited. The content is extremely thorough and enjoyable, but they really need to figure out their editing and sound quality issues.
-
Fool'sGoldfinchFusty FunA little awkward, and not over produced, the Ancient Warfare podcast more than makes up for its faults with the charming enthusiasm and anecdotes of its hosts. The crew are generally well informed, and while not opposed to repeating a point, bring up fresh perspectives on the realities of the ancient battlefield.
-
Robert Henry HoltzIncredible listen! Great information!!!Love this podcast full of great detail and information. Really have thought full and knowledgeable people on. Great mix of history and conservation. I also really enjoy Fin’s Irish History Podcast and Jamie’s British History Podcast, this in on their level of quality. Highly recommend!
-
Trucker JohnZGive me moreAbsolutely love listening to these guys talk about my favorite historical subject.
-
SnarkyjohnnyLove itI love the podcast. The fact that these good people speak about topics that are fairly untouched and discuss new facets of well known events is a breath of fresh air. I would love to see episodes more frequently though.
-
BonjamasteStuttering their way throughVery unorganized podcast
-
Bob0331Worth the timeThis podcast is definitely worth the time you will invest listening to it. He uses updated archeology to add life to our past that can help us understand our present.
-
ZAATARATerrific discussionsSometimes the audio quality is pretty bad , please fix this — no more breathing into mike (!) Well done - keep it up .
-
Kdogg80000Great historical podcastI like the deep dive and discussion format of this podcast. It gives a lot of depth and context to the subjects at hand. This is a must recommend for history lovers.

AveragePaddingtonExcellent Insights from Well-Informed ScholarsA number of insightful people get together and talk about a fascinating topic for an hour.
-
JTWNSCSuperb though a bit scholarlySuperb but a bit scholarly podcast on ancient warfare that offers great round-table discussions on the battles & tactics of the ancient past, but sometimes leaves the audience to catch up. All the speakers are excellent and know their stuff, along with having great interplay with one another. However, many episodes, especially those in the beginning, seem to forget that there may be someone listening who isn't as knowledgable as they are. As a result, many discussions will leave listeners a bit lost trying to understand the characters or events. Thankfully, later episodes provide a brief synopsis of the topic before the discussion, giving the listeners some context. Overall, well worth listening to, especially for fans of the topic, but the speakers should make note not everyone is as knowledgable on the subject matter than they are.
-
OmnidLove itI have to admit I'm not actually that interested in ancient warfare, but I still listen because I'm just a a fan of how much fun they sound like they're having and how knowledgeable they are.
-
753spqrExcellent concept / amateurish productionI'm thrilled with any podcast devoted to ancient military history. On the positive side, all contributors are knowledgeable and excited about their area of interest. Unfortunately, there are far too many digressions, sarcasm and political statements. Add to that the poor sound quality and you end up with a middling podcast.
-
Paulus InvictusSuperb PodcastIt's an awesome format for a podcast. All the contributors get their say in and often vary in their opinions but don't step on each others toes. I enjoy listening to history facts as figures but the round table discussion in this podcast is a really nice change. As many have said, the audio quality can be a bit bothersome at times, but it's nothing that would make me stop listening. Great job Jasper and crew!
-
Mr DoleeezGreat choice for historyThis is right up there with Hardcore History. It is tough to find professional podcasts about history. This one is very informative while entertaining at the same time.
-
Loridans2Very Well DoneJust about the only place I've ever heard a panel work on a podcast. I'm very grateful these folks exist.
-
DonEnriquePoor audio quality make it impossible to listen to.....These historians are good and interesting. Their dicsussons are filled with interesting, even fascinating, information and insights. The problem is I cannot listen to it any more because of the terrible sound quality. It seems they are just talking on speaker phones with all of them open at the same time (no muting for those not speaking). The results are muffled voices, extraneous sounds, and highly variable volume. Common boys, how about a little upgrade in your recording equipment to match the quality of your discussions?
-
Dl3141DisappointingI really like the idea for this pod cast and subscribed immediately when I came across it. However after listening to a few early and late pod casts I have to cancel my subscription. The round table format makes the discussions move slowly and meander a bit. Often one or more guests have poor audio quality which makes the podcast hard to listen to.
-
Elio EnidiasLove these guysLove it. More about the Punic Wars, please!!
-
Mosquito99586Makes you feel like you have smart friendsThis show is like having dinner with a bunch of history teachers and getting to eavesdrop on their conversation/debate. This is almost like an "advanced" history show, there were times when I was glad im a Hardcore History fan so I was up to speed on my Roman terms to keep up. But dont let that statement scare you off, I’m just a slack jawed mechanic and I enjoy this podcast. So will you if you like hearing about old time battle stuff.
-
elsevierGreat PodcastGreat show, I wish there were more! Keep up the great work guys! How about a female voice on the show some time!
-
YanquiCafeteroNot focusedThe roundtable tends to get off on tangents. A lot of time is wasted on trivia. They need strong moderation to keep the group focused on the subject at hand. I've only listened to several, but it didn't make me want to go through the whole show list.
