When David Axelrod and Mike Murphy get together to talk politics, it’s not academic. They speak from the perspective gained through hundreds of campaigns for offices from City Hall to the White House. So if you want to know what’s really going on behind the scenes, where strategic decisions are being made, pull up a stool for Hacks on Tap. Incisive, sometimes uproarious and always entertaining, these political warhorses and their guests will give you insights you’ll only get from folks who have spent a lifetime in the political trenches of both parties.

    Interruptions, a better mike
Waiting for you guys (the new trio) to establish some discipline, such as not talking over each other. Also, do something about John Heilemann’s microphone (or internet connection), which always seems to drop out or garble during these episodes. Finally, a question. How many “scaramuccis” will Wiles survive as Trump’s chief?

    Interrupter
I would like to hear what John Heilman has to say, but this show has become nothing but David Axelrod interrupting the other hosts to stumble over his words while he criticizes Biden for stumbling over words. So had to unsubscribe.

    Over-talking
Have loved this show for a long time, but the addition of John Heilemann (who I REALLY LIKE on other shows) has made it hard to listen to. It’s not comfortable anymore because there’s too much talking over each other, and it’s irritating and harder to follow.

Well there’s a reason y’all call yourselves hacks! LOL MAGA 47!

    Exuberance
Longtime listener and fan of the show. Hacks are at their best when talking strategy and general hackery but can drift toward breathlessness when it comes to Trump which clouds their primal politicking instincts. See final few weeks of election coverage (didn’t age well). Moreover, Heilemann leaves much to be desired. Always wrong, never in doubt-the classic armchair general. Watched his jaw drop after the Clinton loss and clearly hasn’t managed to put his finger on the American electorate since. The poor (rich?) man’s Gibbs. More of a distraction, insight is substandard.

    Heileman issues
I like John Heileman fine but he needs some discipline. He interrupts frequently with the line “I just want to say something quickly” and then goes on to speak at length about whatever it was he wanted to talk about. Either he needs to find his inner self control or the producer should give him some direction.

    Say her name.
Axelrod: when you talk about Trump you refer to him as such (“Trump”). But often when you mention Kamala Harris, your reference is “she” or “her.” It’s a common sexist (even if subconscious) habit among men. SHE has a name. Please get in the habit of saying it.

Sometimes it is difficult to hear what someone is saying on your podcast. Can you please wait until the person who is speaking finishes before you start talking? Thank you kindly.

    Heilmann
Axe and Murphy when will you have the tough talk with Heilmann, the overtalker who stretches every comment into a tiresome series of time consuming parenthetical phrases. Most professionals make a point in 20aec, JH stretches into 3min.

Makes me smile in a pandemic
I podcast frequently but there is ONE podcast I set upon immediately when next available...HACKS ON TAP. THANK YOU , Axe & Murph for being about the only thing worth laughing about during the TRUMP PANDEMIC! OMG can somebody plez turn out the lights on this maniac president?? Signed, An Oklahoma Blue Voter (and there’s not many of us around here...but I’m an educated, suburbanite female who thinks Trump is EFN nuts!!! Keep up the wit, Guyz!!

    Genius content, big fan BUT…
I’ve listened to this podcast since day one, and I appreciate that in the midst of this crazy election period, the guys still show up and deliver! The sound quality has been iffy, though, for the last few months - in particular from Heilemann’s line. I sometimes stop listening b/c of this, which is a shame.

    Mike Murphy is a blowhard
The guy said disgusting piece of garbage. Just listen to his positions. He goes on TV promoting gas and oil interests, but never tells the viewers that he’s being paid directly by the oil companies. In addition, he dismisses the genocide as non-issue. It’s ironic because he’s Irish. If anyone should know what occupation and apartheid looks like, it’s an Irishman. He says he’s a non-Trumper, but he’s worse than Trump. At least Trump is honest about his bigotry.
  • LisFierce
    Garbage
The hosts just spin everything to manipulate you. They offer no critiques or any kind of new insight. You should be ashamed of yourselves. I really tried, but you’re completely unlistenable.
  • Ezra's Geico
    Some “expert”
I tuned out early in the episode with “professor” Ron Brownstein. I couldn’t get past his analysis that Trump has had a “crisp” closing argument. What a joke! Talk about sanewashing a complete buffoon! I didn’t even stick around long enough to hear Axe annoyingly cutting off others with his “expert” views.
  • Les Bloviating
    Wait your turn!
I read another review that John H talks too much, but I’ve long felt that Murphy talks over and interrupts everyone, Axelrod, Heilemann, and every guest. I often tune in mainly to hear a new slant from the guests, but they are interrupted or tend to ask Murphy questions that I already have heard his answer to. Still will listen, but patience is wearing thin. Like Murphy for his perspective, but couldn’t he share the pie?

Best political pundit podcast, bar none!
Interesting, informative, and lots of fun.
  • am lkhgf
    Was better
The original hosts did not seem to talk over each other as much. So hard to follow lately when everyone is talking at the same time.
  • TheLark8
    Heilemann - quiet please
Heilemann needs to talk a lot less. If he could just get to his point succinctly and then stop speaking over everyone.

The best political show just got better
Axe and Murphy are political geniuses, for sure. The best thing about them (and this show) is their gut-busting humor. And John Heilemann only adds to the fun. Don’t like his spicy language? My guess is you wouldn’t like hanging out in the backrooms of DC powerbrokers either. Plug your ears and listen up!
  • Twocents2222
    Insiders
This pod was the best for insider knowledge but seems to be lacking a bit lately. Where’s the insights on donors and DC cocktail party chatter? Hope it’ll come back soon. One more thought on the show…John is not a benefit (no original thought, insights) plus his blue language and crass references feel very awkward on this pod.

John's interruptions are tarnishing the show.
Please ask John to stop interrupting David and Mike. I listen to this as an alternative to cable news. Thank you for all you do.

    I’m done
Enjoy some parts of the episodes I’ve listened to, but tired of the continual interruptions and especially the unecessary vulgarity of the third commentator.
  • calzoneous
    Bad call on Gibbs replacement
Great podcast with good chemistry between Murphy and Axelrod. Listened for years. But not a fan of Heilemann. Hurts your brand, too much casual vulgarity and a journalist instead of a consultant.
  • Purly Knits
    Let the Guest Talk
There are long stretches when I forget there is a guest or a third co-host because of A&M constant babbling and interruptions during a talking point. Take a breath and let the other person contribute. Remember the old saying about why we have two ears and one mouth?
  • 541red
    Babble-on
Mike! Stop. Babbling. You’re like ‘Michael’ the producer played by genius Peter Scolari on “Newhart”. Just answer Axe's friggin question. Sheezus how many times??? Seriously
  • Straightiron
    Racist Pete Infomercial
Blowhards Murphy and Axe campaigned for Mary Pete hard in 2019. Turned this podcast into an infomercial. They are arrogant and their insights are silly. (They wanted a Mini primary which would’ve insured a Democratic loss 🤮

Loved the Carville show! Except for the sound
Hey, really was looking forward to the 3 of you geniuses hacking it out! Trouble was Carville was not coming in clear…his sound was having some digital blurbia and couldn’t hear half of his comments. The two of you were right on point as usual! Enjoyed the commentary! One of my favorite pods. Cheers B NC Hope our state will flip!!

    John
I love the addition of John to the show because he’s very smart and insightful. However, now that there are three people they are constantly interrupting and talking over each other. David has a speech problem where he simply can’t get the words out and John has no patience for it. They need to learn each other’s rhythms and stop talking over each other. It doesn’t make for good pod to listen to three people talking at the same time.

Great podcast, Audio poor after YouTube
Love your podcast, have listened since the beginning. Since going on YouTube, the sound quality has decreased significantly for those of us who are listening to the audio– only version. I hope you can improve it with better microphones.
  • AintWhatIUsedToBe
    Tactical
I find Hacks interesting because -at least a this point, early September - it’s purely tactical. Two practitioners with each with personal high-level experience on national campaigns, and a journalist-observer… who’s a bit younger and not entirely as jaded. Jaded, but still holding on… Definitely therapeutic humor, insightful because the two practitioners have allegedly different perspectives on tax policies but a common goal on the national direction— and it’s far to late in this year’s process to deal with technical issues. This year, it’s all binary from now on.

We need Harris signs in Bucks county , Pa
Hi David. Great episode! Could you please tell your friend Saul that we need many more yard signs for Harris Walz in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. I think the ratio must be something like 25 to one in this county - 25 Trump signs to one sign for Harris/Walz. Please reach out to Saul. Whatever you can do would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    Please tell Murph to hush!
I love the show but would love it even more if Mike Murphy would let a guest finish a sentence. Or even a phrase. He’s not the only smart one there and frankly, it’s so irritating and annoying that I wish I had a mute button whenever he speaks. Wait your turn, Mike. Thank you!!!

    Review 1 of 1
I have been a fan for awhile and I have noted that you will become too partisan in nature. You might as well be at arm of the DNC. I happen to be a Never Trumper, but you have been way too favorable towards Kamala and you minimize her flip-flops which are legendary in their number and poorly explained. I will most likely be unsubscribing in the near future, which makes me sad.
  • Samwein93
    One of my favorite shows
I look forward to the new episode every week! Murphy is hilarious and I could listen to Axe all day.

    Lose Gibbs…
Listening to this guy is like watching paint dry; dull beyond belief, plus he about as insightful as Trump is introspective… Update 8/26/24: long-time listener…podcast has devolved into useless drivel. Murphy must have amnesia; he’s now singing the praises of Kamala, a witless cipher whose main selling point is not being Trump… All these guys are rhapsodic over a bunch of speechifying done by soulless political hacks; the words mean less than nothing and “the hackeroos” are just part of the game; no insights or significant analyses, they just can’t stand Trump (even if justified for many good reasons) so they dump on him and try to beatify a mediocrity; I’m done; don’t waste your time…
  • verymary28
    Agree with others…
Heilemann needs to chill. I miss Gibbs! Axe Gibbs & Murphy together were a fun & comforting (in the many dark moments of our recent/current politics) trio with good chemistry, but Mr H has to dial it back a bit. Also, I’m a fairly mainstream lefty at this point but feel like Murph lately is trying to turn us into actual Republicans. Let Ds be Ds Murph! And we’ll let Rs be Rs….that is, the old-school kind where an extreme aversion to taxes & overconfidence in free markets to solve all ills is the worst we used to have to contend with.

    Gotten very boring
Hacks on Tap was once my favorite podcast. It has now devolved into a weekly praise and worship session of Kamala Harris. Am I taking crazy pills? Is she better than Trump? For sure? Is she better than Biden? I guess. But let’s be real. She’s not that great. She’s not that smart and all the real “joy” is based on the fact that she’s not totally senile. I’m hopeful it makes a turn back to being critical of both sides, but until this weird love fest is over, I’ll probably stop listening.

    What once was great…
This show was a five star show until they added John Hileman. He’s soooo partisan, he’s not able to see thinks as they are, he only sees things from the eyes of a progressive democrat. Both Axe and Murphy are anti-Trump, pro left wing politics but they both can see facts and true and tell it. Even if it criticizes their “side”. Heilman is a hack to the worst degree. He is so purely a liberal that he can’t be objective or truthful. One star until he leaves the show.

    Heilemann is no Gibbs
Heilemann is a hack, but not in a good way.

I think you read all the new comments!
Much better today - taking turns talking and giving everyone a chance. Thank you! Love this podcast. I was hoping you didn’t ruin it with the change to the team. I’m thinking you read the reviews and corrected.

    Heileman is a lot
Love the show, but Heileman is just not as smart, entertaining or funny as he must think he is. I really hope he takes his foot off the gas.

    Hard
I am a big fan but that last episode was hard to listen to. You were all talking over each other. Awful..
