True Sunlight

Previously known as the Murdaugh Murders Podcast, True Sunlight is the intersection of True Crime, journalism and systematic corruption.  Celebrated journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell are taking their style of reporting beyond Alex Murdaugh and his co-conspirators. We expose the truth wherever it leads giving voice to victims like Mica Francis, Sara Lynn Colucci, and Christa Gilley, while still pursuing justice for all the victims you've met so far like Stephen Smith, Dallas Stoller, and others. True Sunlight is the antithesis of True crime. True Sunlight values accuracy over "access journalism". True Sunlight is shed with empathy — not exploitation. True Sunlight was created as a matter of public service — not just entertainment. While the name of the podcast has changed, our mission, values and team have not. We are simply expanding our horizons while continuing to shine a much needed bright light on crime and corruption wherever it appears.Ranked #1 and #2 globally in 2021 and 2023 respectively as the Murdaugh Murders Podcast, True Sunlight provides unmatched insight into the crimes and criminals exposed on MMP and dives deep into new instances of where crime meets corruption across the US.We empower listeners to understand their legal and judicial systems through investigative journalism while providing tools to hold agencies and public figures accountable in order to change those systems for the better. Listen on any streaming service or visit TrueSunlight.com to learn more. Premium Members also get access to searchable case files, written articles with documents, case photos, episode videos and exclusive live experiences with our hosts on lunasharkmedia.com all in one place. CLICK HERE to learn more: https://bit.ly/3BdUtOE. Real Journalism Finally!
Please keep up the good work. You are NOT political despite what all those other reviewers blasting you are saying. If they actually listened they would notice that over the years you have attacked politicians on BOTH sides. These ladies don’t give anyone a pass, no matter political party. Corruption is corruption. That’s real journalism- for anyone reading your reviews don’t listen to those people trying to degrade these high integrity journalists just bc they briefly mentioned a personal reaction to the election. That’s just a ridiculous reason to discount all their fine work over the years. Keep going ladies - you are an inspiring & refreshing voice in media.

Stop the politics and focus on the cases
The cases being reviewed are interesting and I want to continue listening because of that. However, the random political comments need to stop to make this an actual legit investigative podcast. I work in the law enforcement field and this is such a turnoff. You need to understand your audience is made of different individuals and we are here for the actual cases you are covering. Not your own personal opinions.

    Enough about yourself
You are missing the boat. You are not the only truth seekers out there. Plus your hatred of the Murdaugh family is apparent. Move on already. The Sanctimonious tone is disgusting. You are obviously in a bubble. Will never listen again.

    Two pods, same story
    Same story over and over.

    Lib white women
Are the worst… These women talk smack on everyone but play victim when people come at them. ZERO self awareness. Hypocrites. Also, for “journalists” why so many pronunciation, grammar and syntax errors. The sunlight is not very bright

    Use to be Excellent
I am done. I am not on the right at all but all these people who want to get political it is an immediate turn off and unfollow. Shame but its been going down hill i had hopped this would ease up but its worse. Make a political podcast if thats what you want thats not what this is advertised as. OLD REVIEW: It may not be highly produced but this is a true investigative reporter not someone who googles articles and repeats them. Excellent and has facts not fluff! Great work and real reporting is almost non existent today. Keep it up!!

    Wasted Potential
My rating is really about 2 3/4 stars. There is a lot of potential for a great podcast. This team does some really good researching & digging for facts. However, Mandy’s obsession with all things Murdoch has become tiresome. I realize that her coverage of the Murdoch case put her on the national map, it is like she is still trying to live off of it. Also, her extremely biased reporting style is off putting. And David’s overly dramatic delivery is ridiculous. I have never heard so much pearl clutching in my life. She is very over the top. So what could be an informative podcast is becoming unhinged & unbearable.

    Today 11.7.24
I’ve listened to you and supported you religiously for years but when Mandy stated at the beginning of the episode this morning how she has been crying (clearly over the election) I nearly deleted you. After what our country has been through the past four years, not to mention, the recent flooding in NC, with the least amount of response from Biden or Kamala, I was shocked. I’ll never say Trump is perfect but he didn’t ruin our economy before nor will he now. Very disappointed this morning.

    Ugh
Bern listening since ep one, rapidly went downhill. Not going to waste my time….you did NOT discuss the Nautilus case on the COJ ep….you said you’d get to it on True Sunlight, as you signed off. What a waste of time…..only reason I listened to that tripe and skimming through this obe, found it sbd your first lube was hiw you had previously discussed it…..great org at Lunashark Mefia, esp as you were giving Eric Blabd advice on proofing books as a fellow author if one very mediocre women’s issue tome….abd even more mediocre journalism student for piling on a poor Uber driver you chose to engage in convo esp after learning he was sn ex-cop….nice to respect others opinions, nee’ their right to have an opinion different than you, another non-lawyer. I took my SJD with a dissertation on th 1st Amendment, so spare me your “expertise” in it….esp as a podcaster…..see how the Delphi case judge feels about podcasters and journalism or yo be precise, podcast “journalists.” I wasted enough if my time typing thus on my jet- prob burned through more Jet A-1 fuel than the entire Lunashark “empire.” Cut the personal drama! It was only an election, the Republic has survived worse….know you’re hx and stop vying like a drama queen.

    Stay in your lane.
No one truly cares what your political views are. No one will ever change their opinion based on what you say. I’m not coming to your podcast to listen to you rant about your beliefs. I came to your podcast to listen to the story about JP Miller.

Really, you have to bring your personal politics into this? Does this mean we have to hear even more about your emotional well being because your person didn’t win? Get over it and for heavens sake buck up!
  • MelGWBenz
    Good stories but….
Keep your political beliefs to yourself and quit trying to push your views on your audience.

    Accurate & Reliable
Former review: I appreciate this podcast. The creators have done an excellent job! Accurate, reliable, and fact-based - this is excellent work. UPDATED review - Can we please not hear lib politics?!?!

    Excellent reporting, interesting content
As journalists, Mandy and Liz do a fantastic job of uncovering hidden details, documents, and subtleties of various legal cases while piecing them together to tell a complete story. They are especially skilled at explaining complex issues in a very easy-to-understand way. I think the podcast is greatly improved now that there is no longer the silly Shakespearean-style reading of documents and emails. One critique that I think would make the podcast even better would be for Liz to adopt a more neutral delivery when discussing egregious and criminal behavior. Some of her comments are funny but her righteous tone diminishes the professionalism of the podcast and she comes off sounding self-important. Mandy, in contrast, comes across as much more professional, imo, while still being incredibly funny. The two have great chemistry and you can tell they have incredible respect for each other. Overall, great podcast that keeps evolving as they grow and learn.

    Outstanding
As a former newspaper print journalist who started and ended my short journalism career in the Georgia “Low Country” of Statesboro, Augusta, and Savannah, I admire your work and am so proud of you! Keep up the great work!

    Safety in the sunlight
I’ve been listening to you since the beginning and watching your journalism change outcome of a high-profile murder case was absolutely incredible. As a woman, it was also empowering. There’s nothing like sharing an episode of truths told by straight up and ethical journalists with someone who desperately needs to hear it. Even if they aren’t ready to hear the truth. Your unbiased work makes all the TRUTHS know. I appreciate how hard you work to shine light on all the actions the world as a whole has grown so accepting of. It gives me hope that people are waking up to the good ol boy system we’ve previously been cornered into surrendering to. Honestly, y’all are so good it makes me concerned for your safety! We know enough about the system by now…so stay pesky! But also stay safe!! The world needs more truth tellers like y’all!

    Love, love, love
After listening to the latest True Sunlight, and Cup of Justice, I realized I am always sad when the episode ends because I have to wait a whole week for the next one. These two are by far, and I listen to many podcasts, my number 1 go to podcasts i listen to as soon as it comes out. The others can wait because the content you provide is thought provoking, educational, and scary sometimes when you see what is happening in our country. I am not from your part of the U.S., but I can see the issues you discuss happening everywhere and we need to be sure to bring it to light, change the law, speak up for all people who are treated poorly. Thank you for all you do!! Keep up the great work!
  • Riv'sLita
    Keep up the exceptional work!
Found out about your podcast late, but decided to go back to the beginning and listened with interest and sometimes edge of my seat tension. The combination of Liz and Mandy is stellar—journalism at its finest. David’s contributions are delightful and appreciated as well. You got me here through some rough times by being there to keep my mind occupied, so thanks extra for that! Keep spreading the sunlight!!
  • Meemoren
    Fascinating
I love this podcast. It is so clear, and straightforward. My Mom was a journalist so this approach is extremely refreshing. The covered stories is so crazy, complicated and fascinating. It is amazing how deep the reporting goes. As I continue to listen, I remain so impressed with your journalistic approach and deep dives. There is so much HARD work done behind the scenes.
  • AJZebraGirl
    Thorough, thoughtful, integrity
Mandy and Liz along with those working behind the scenes are the epitome of journalism with integrity and purpose. Thank you for your research, fact finding, hours upon hours developing leads, vetting sources, and learning the depths of the details to deliver a well rounded and balanced long-form news article in an engaging podcast format. I respect you both for your professionalism, integrity, hard work, and authenticity.

    They are not perfect but…
Although at this moment I cannot afford to pay for a membership, this podcast is so worthy of listen to and/or become a member. Little details of imperfection are simply trivial and irrelevant. Listening to podcasts, you realize it’s hard to find a high quality podcast with the combination of activism, hard work, great morals&values, compassion and integrity like this team does, including David. The whole thing is inspirational. Thank you!

Will listen to ads through this one!
While I can’t pay for the premium account yet I can and do listen to all the ads in order to help this podcast and production company. I love the compassion for victims and for the fact-based reporting in this podcast. Mandy & Liz are so good! I also like when we get to hear David. Keep up the good work!

    Sad to leave
I’ve listened since the beginning but sadly I’m finished with this podcast. It’s feeling like they’re capitalizing on Micah’s tragedy. It’s sounding weirdly obsessive with misandry. What happened to poor Sandy Smith? Or Grant Solomon? On top of that…the paywall. Lately the vocal fry is unbearable. Sorry
  • shinyhoe
    Enough!
Love you guys and Im still listening but really done with hearing about the no account loser JP. He doesn’t deserve this much attention! Move on, please. Theres got to be better stories out there. And I cringe every time Mandy says “edcedra” and yeah David please just talk normal. You sound like a vaudeville actor.
  • seasidebargains
    Mica coverage
It was so sad to listen to her latest 911 calls- thank you so much for staying on top of this terrible case. I hope that JP and his “church” get what’s deserved and that he doesn’t have a peaceful day for the rest of his miserable life
  • godzgrrl
    Fantastic Team
I’ve been listening since the Murdaugh investigation and it’s my #1 choice for listening. The journalism is solid and important, but never gives over to self-importance. Mandy, Liz, and David are real people telling real stories they’re really investigating. And I’m here for ALL of it.

    Late to the Party
Not sure what rock I’ve been under but I found this awesome Podcast after listening to Mandy on Laura Richard’s Crime Analyst Podcast and I can’t get enough! Mandy is the best investigative journalist I’ve ever heard. And the addition of Liz Farrell doubles their power. Mandy and Liz uncover so much detail that is never reported anywhere else. I’m so impressed and interested to see what each next episode will turn up. Keep up the great work and keep shining sunlight in those dark areas of our world! Thank you!
  • Lfaccordini
    Excellent Reporting
I am from SC, and the good-ole-boy system has been in place for a long time. I appreciate the respectful disruption to a crooked justice system, and the courageous call on TSP’s journalists. I am happy to support this. Connecting people to resources, vision, education, outcomes- helping people believe in the good fight for justice, and that change is possible. It is disheartening to see the Murdaughs and the JP Millers of this world seemingly “getting away” with things for too long before exposure. BUT. It has not gone unseen. God honors those who fight for justice for those who cannot fight themselves- and says to it is good to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. (Micah 6:8). It’s an honorable cause, and I am all in for it! #TeamTrueSunlight. Keep at it, TSP. You are making a difference1

    Murdaugh Murders Episode 1
I really wanted to listen to this series and tried multiple times. The information was great and interesting, however, I just couldn’t take the narrator’s vocal fry. It was very distracting and unnecessary.

    Great Reporting Terrible Voice Acting
I used to listen to this show regularly especially before Alex Murdaugh was finally arrested. I’m not sure that would have happened without these two wonderful investigative journalists. These days, I rarely listen because I hate the excessive and long commercial breaks and the voice of David reading police reports etc. He is no actor and I really wish he would go back to his day job. If he could just use a normal voice and tone it would be ok but his “voice acting” is just atrocious.

    Miller
I can’t listen to anymore info about JP Miller. He’s unhinged, obviously and at least culpable to pushing his wife into a desperate situation. Anyone who sits under his teaching as a pastor deserves what they get at this point. Mica was obviously a troubled and vulnerable person for many years who fell easily into this relationship with someone she thought was good for her. It sounds as if there was betrayal and irresponsibility by both in their marriage but I just can’t invest anymore time in it. I feel badly for the poor kids who are still a part of this whacked out family.
  • ruby ja
You have, and can do better.
The podcast used to be really good, but now it’s just repeating the same recommendation over and over again with no real changes and I know that research takes time and money and it’s not all fast and quick like we would like it to be, but it doesn’t change it back they could be talking about more things and they just aren’t. I also don’t like the fact that they only talk about white women, as a woman of color it’s really upsetting that they’ve never covered a case with a female color. Also, the body modification ads are very distressing and upsetting, not everybody wants to hear things like that and it’s really a bad message that you are pushing to listeners, you talk a lot about misogyny, and men controlling the narrative, and then you’re gonna push ads that talk about body modification that’s really disturbing to me as a listener. Leslie get real mental health specialist to talk about coercion, and bipolar, depression, specifically, because just having a mental illness does not make you an authority on all mental illnesses. And it’s really upsetting to hear. Misinformation episode after episode when you could be doing better. I apologize for any spelling, or grammatical problems with this message, I use assistive technology, and it’s not always accurate.

    First Amendment
Just heard your most recent episode and didn’t realize you are a Jayhawk. I am also a graduate of the J School. Did you take 1st Amendemnt from Ted Fred? He’d be very proud of your pursuit for Justice through journalism.

    Yikes
Used to be good. Too personal now. Edited to add: you’re still rehashing facts from the murder case for the 100th time? They are geniuses only in their own minds
  • aslsherry
This podcast sets a high bar
I feel I can trust the facts that are being presented on True Sunlight. They are researched and corroborated. The discussion clarifies their meaning and importance. Mandi and Liz do have their opinions about what’s happening, and that’s fine with me. This is a podcast, not the evening news. Their story IS part of the story here. I’m glad they are moving on to some new cases, but I do still want to see the Murdaugh story to its conclusion, including the others who participated in his schemes. Since listening to this podcast, I’ve become much more discerning about the others I’ll listen to.
  • Rathersmallfish
    Please Research Mental Health More
First, I want to be clear that I usually thoroughly enjoy this podcast. However, the coverage of Mica Francis makes me feel as if mental illness isn’t thoroughly understood or researched by the hosts, which, to be fair, isn’t uncommon. As someone who is bipolar, I can 100% understand how Mica may have just snapped, and that something pushed her over that final decision-making-cliff, even if Mica herself wasn’t bipolar. While I understand that such a concept can be difficult to comprehend, there is a LOT of research to back up this type of behavior prior to someone ending their lives through suicide, which leads me to my problem with this podcast: just because it’s a hard concept to grasp doesn’t mean it’s not what happened, and I feel like this possibility is being ignored by the hosts, which is extremely disappointing when the rest of their reporting seems to be so in depth and carefully researched. Or worse, they are choosing to ignore it because suicide isn’t as dramatic as the other theories. Either way, the lack of accepting that suicide, that Mica may have just snapped & the suicide wasn’t a premeditated action, is a legitimate possibility for Mica’s death feels disingenuous and incongruent with the typical caliber and unbiased reporting that made me a fan of their reporting to begin with. As someone who also comes from a writing/communications background, it’s disappointing to feel like I found a podcast that utilized traditional journalism with unbiased reporting that has begun slipping into unfounded speculation, especially when doing more research into pre-suicidal actions would provide the possibility of answers to some of the most basic questions surrounding Mica’s actions the day that she died.

    Change it up
I don’t know why I keep listening to this podcast. The more I listen the more it annoys me. She sounds more and more like a middle school girl spreading gossip.

    Love True Sunlight!!
I have been listening since Season 1, Episode I on our drive down to our house in Isle of Palms, South Carolina and was hooked! Made our drive “fly” by! As an ex journalist from KC, now Boston area, I instantly loved Mandy and Liz! Their tenacity, peskiness and determination cannot be touched. Also became addicted to COJ! In MMP, I always loved when EB was on! He is so smart and genuine. A great permanent addition to COJ! Keep up all of your great work! “Stay Pesky”! ❤️💙

    Gripping
Mandy and her team seem to have a knack for diving deep into the details and unraveling complex narratives. It's like detective work for the ears, piecing together the puzzle of human behavior and justice.
  • Well:
    Please stop!
Your obsession with DH is bizarre. Can’t you just report the shocking loss of DH in the State Senate? No, you were not the only reporter who clearly saw the writing on the wall with AM. Please find some journalistic skills and stop the high school drama. You harp on those who have wronged you. It is so strange. You had a good podcast with obvious great sources. You shouldn’t be the story!
  • brendatoo2002
    Listening from day one.
I’ve been listening to Mandy and her reporting of this whole issue from the first day. But honestly I’m sick of always hearing on every single episode that information is behind a paywall. It seems like lately all they do is discuss the most popular topics on social media at the time. What happened to Steven Smiths case? You said you’d not let that fall by the wayside but it’s been months since you said anything about him. It’s not popular so you don’t update on his situation?

    Exceptional research and podcast
Podcast used to be amazing. One of the best out there. Still has incredible journalism and I’m a huge fan. Lately they have some huge blind spots but I’m still a listener and appreciate their dedication and commitment to calling out abuse and corruption. They aren’t afraid to “say it like it is” and I’m here for it.
  • JoyShops
    ‘Journalism’ issues here
Journalism is well-written, well-documented facts and information. It should be a story - easy to follow and understand. This seems like a lot of over-dramatization of the story, woven together with self-congratulatory tales about the good old days of very small markets and normal, regular journalist interactions. Real journalism is very different. I couldn’t follow this podcast for more than 5 minutes. The writing needs an overhaul and the narrators need some vocal coaching.
  • Ckgibbs
    Love the Podcast, but…
Why does David read so dramatically? It’s too much. These are legal documents and letters; the over-emphasis detracts from the message in my opinion.
